But you can pull a file. Fireball tools has a video where he made a machine to drag a file, and it hardly shortens the life span of it. This Old Tony also did a less scientific video involving a die filer where he also concluded it's okay to pull a file. The existence of die files and pneumatic files alone should bunk the myth that dragging a file greatly reduces the life span

How do you sharp an ax? Use a sharpie 😁😇
The simplest way to sharpen an axe: take an angle grinder...or one of those 25$ automatic sharpeners (Fiskars sells a combo for axes and knives) Works about 90% as good and takes about 10 seconds

Could you do a video on sharpening lawnmower blades?
Ive used a flapper wheel on an angle grinder and a 1x30 belt sander too. Very good for profiling the edge if you are experienced with the tool. The sander will actually get them extremely keen with a smooth convex edge if sanded on a slack belt.

exactly 👉👉👍 Both sides.
These are great, brother.
The "don't pull a file" thing... has been concretely disproven. Maybe when sharpening a blade you should only push. But in general. Filing back and forth does it twice as fast. And it doesn't hurt the file.
Great tip! thanks
I used to use a variable speed electric power file on slow. If you sit the base of the power file on the head of the axe and pivot left and right, you get a great even edge.
"The best ones are made in Portugal or Switzerland." Proceeds to use crappy USA made tools
If youre worried about the file it doesn't matter which way you pull or push it the ware of the file is basically the same
Best way to sharpen an axe
BTW, great tip , thanks 👍
I prefer to push into the cutting edge
This channel feels like Ron Swanson giving advice during Joan Calamezzo’s talk show.
Sir you're supposed to wear gloves...
Did you file towards the axe on the flip side, but not at first?
I didn't realise how fragile my human hands are until a just lightly bumped my thumb with a shaving sharp axe. Cut my EPL tendon and couldn't give the thumbs up anymore, the surgeon found the end of the tendon in my wrist, routed it back to my thumb. My gloves that I was wearing may as well been made of butter.
I get the push action of the file BUT, I believe that one should use the push action in the same direction on both sides. IE,; Away from the handle. 👉🤔
Kody, Fireball tool’s channel did a test to see if the pushing off the file is “a thing”. He found after extensive testing that pushing and pulling didn’t damage the file and that actually pulling the file removed more material faster.
@preptoadventure
2 жыл бұрын
If it's the same test I saw, it's true that it doesn't damage the file and it does remove more material, but besides that the test didn't really consider what was being filed. When making a cutting edge I could definitely see issues by going back and forth.
Works great

How would you fix burrs and flat points on the edge?
@gregorywilson1114
6 ай бұрын
That would be ( the ) primary reason to sharpen the blade! The more the damage the more the effort using the same method. Push away from handle both sides. 😉
Pulling or pushing doesn't matter. Someone did a test of 1000 strokes and different files with pulling, pushing, and both. It didn't change the sharpness.. it did however, change the speed in which you complete the job.

I agree. Only reason to avoid the pull is you might cut yourself on the back stroke.
@Him__3000

Interesting. Before i knew how to properly use a file, i used the sawing stroke, back and forth, and it ruined my Helko Werk file to where i can see the teeth rolled forward. Depends on the file too i’d assume. Overall, i’ll stick to the forward stroke because that’s what has worked for me. Will check the vid out though!

@@Him__3000 I'm with you there. Ive seen files ruined and ruined them myself that way. The cheaper ones go quicker. And 1000 strokes ain't anything on the Workin life of a file! The only way you should go back and forth is draw filing. If you do drag back on regular filing you should at least let off of the pressure on the backstroke
And that is how it’s done.
