AUDIO GEAR SHOPPING LIST
Yamaha HS5 x2 ($199 USD each)

Yamaha HS8S ($479 USD)
www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...
König Meyer 26772 Studio Monitor Stand x2 ($77 USD each)
www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...
Cable 1/4” TRS to XLR3M x2 (price varies by length)
Cable XLR3F to XLR3M x2 (price varies by length)
The HS5’s are available in black and white. You can also get a version with screw holes for mounting. Don’t forget to buy two speakers (they are sold separately)! We tried some cheaper stands but they wobbled too much! We really liked how solid the König and Meyers were. Make sure you buy cables that are an appropriate length. The quality of XLR cables can vary. We really like cables built with Neutrik Connectors.
ACOUSTIC PANEL SHOPPING LIST:
-Insulation
-Timber
-Fabric (for the front and for the back)
-Picture Hanging Hardware
-Screws and Glue
INSULATION:
We used Rockwool Acoustic Insulation. Choose an appropriate size for your room. Remember the thicker the insulation the better it will attenuate sound. The names and dimensions are slightly different in the USA (Rockwool Safe ’n’ Sound - available in 6” or 3” thickness) and Europe (Rockwool Sound Insulation - available in 100mm, 70mm and 50mm thickness). Our insulation came in a pack of 12.
WOOD:
We used square planed softwood. Choose timber that is slightly thicker than your insulation. For example, we used 50mm insulation but the wood was 69mm wide! The extra space behind the insulation actually improves sound attenuation. For our 1200x400mm insulation bats we used about 3.8 metres of wood for each panel.
FABRIC:
We got our fabric from eBay. Search for ‘cotton muslin’ and pick a color! Alternatively, check out local suppliers. We kept our panels plain, but you might prefer something more ornate. For the back of the panel we used landscaping weed fabric.
FITTINGS:
We used picture hardware to hang our panels. This minimizes damage to the walls. Search for ‘picture d-ring two hole’ and ‘double nail picture hook’. You’ll need two of each for each panel.
OTHER BITS:
You’ll need wood glue and screws! We used 11 screws per panel.

Well researched and well presented! I have a much cheaper method of improving the acoustics on those rare occasions I need to record something - I go into my small bedroom closet! All of the clothes do a great job of absorbing sounds, so, no reverb! I toyed with the idea of buying studio monitors, but since my audience is mostly KZread viewers, and nearly 75% of those watch content on mobile devices, with their tiny speakers, I decided that simply using decent headphones when mixing audio was sufficient.

The professional music producer who mentored me recommended the KRK ROKIT 8 (or 5 for your small room), or Mackie MR8 (5 for you), both of which are cheaper than your Yamahas. Also check out M-Audio. If money is no option then Genelec and Adam are the Rolls Royces of reference monitors.

Actually for the audio, Yamaha HS series is a great choice in its price range. If you would use them solely for music production I would recommend pair of HS7 or HS8's and ditch the sub. But you'll use the setup for movie material where sub gives you more information how it would sound on home surround setup. Good choice.

170sq ft of walls (excluding ceiling and carpeted floor). About 43sq ft of acoustic paneling. There's some other furnishings in the room that break up the walls and help too.

I went with cheap PC speakers because when I was doing my setup, I didn't realize how important the audio would be. I have tinnitus, so listening to you talk is okay, but all those subtle layers of added audio like cloth movement get completely lost. I have to use over ear headphones to hear properly.

  • @FilmEditingPro

    @FilmEditingPro

The more acoustic paneling you can put up the better! Anechoic chambers are covered from floor to ceiling in panels. But for typical usage lots of people recommend 10-15% coverage as a minimum but 25-35% coverage for best results. Placement is critical too.
