Prof G Markets: Why TikTok Will Be Spun, Credit Suisse, the Big Bitcoin Bet, and Blank Street Coffee
On this week's unfiltered video version of Prof G Markets, Scott explains why he thinks TikTok is headed for a spin-out rather than a ban. He then breaks down Credit Suisse’s spectacular fall from grace and shares his thoughts on the million dollar bet on bitcoin and hyper inflation. We close out with a look at Blank Street Coffee’s brand strategy after its latest funding round.

This is now what I look forward to on Mondays. Thank you all very much.
Weekly dose of Prog G. Let’s go!
You killed it on Bill Maher.
Good shit Prof G. Tell it like it is.
Great week in News! Yes, Spin OFF TikTok!
Prof G humor top level
Great podcast guys.
Amazing commentary, Scott 🎉 Prof G, how is it when I am searching about Ed through the Prof G internet queries - there is no reference to Ed. I think Ed is worth listening to, therefore, he needs a mention in your layout. Scott, your insights into the markets, technology and politics are excellent. Thanks so much for your thoughtful podcasts. 😊
"Absolutely not" was taken out of context by the media, read the rest of the statement. Khudairy said that increasing their stake in the bank to above 10% would cause new rules to kick in from both Saudi and European regulators. “We’re not inclined to get into a new regulatory regime,”
Just recently discovered this channel. There are some excellent insights into what makes communication successful and understanding people’s emotions here
Love the DOGG! Insightful, funny, raw and real. RawDogg G!!!
awesome love it
love this show
great stuff! Awesome job on Real Time. :-)
Lol…I love that the analogy is that the US is like Woody Allen during the Balaji section
Thought it was called the Michael Jackson room because of the racecar bed…..🤪
One of my favourite episodes. So many delicious quotables lol
Scott, Ed and Co, I love the podcast. Listen in each week, all the way from Dubai! Was very interested in your discussion about Blank Street, do I looked it up. Great concept, but nothing earth shattering new in this part of the world or Australia, where I am from....so, got to ask what do you think is its USP? Is it the combo of technology and low set up cost v traditional sit down cafes? What is the actual coffee quality like? Scott you said automated are you referring to the actual coffee dispensing? Or the app?...curious to get clarity
Love it
Hungover Scott is pretty funny….the fiancé joke slayed
Being a multi billionaire might make you particularly attractive to some women ... Who may even be decades younger 🤔
Utterly refreshing listening to folks that can call good shots along with the bad, no matter the tribe they are claiming to be a part of.
What is the key to success at predicting almost everything wrong? Being a professor at NYU.
edible for the hangover is a real hit or miss lmao
How many houses are unoccupied?
Yes Scott...from a therapeutic POV, most anger is a projection of what is happening with the person who is angry. Someone, something, an event, etc...triggers an individual's emotional response, which depending on the situation might be anger in that moment. And yes...speaking or responding in a way that de-escalates is most helpful.
Ed, remember that Trump was on the ban TikTok train only because kids were trolling the shit out of him. Had absolutely nothing to do with policy or national security, was completely personal, like everything else.
The 'Big Bitcoin Bet' story resembles the arc suggested by John Galt except the country described by him is very different from the United States of today.
How much Real-estate is being bought by REITS? Exploding costs to control rents?
Scott has hands down the best take on this whole Balaji situation. Kudos!
JP's main task is to reduce inflation. How you do this? Raising interest rates? Why? Because it reduces demand. Rates are still low for the objective to be achieved. Soft landing is almost impossible...
I take $1000 out of my bank and buy some Bitcoin. Buyer gets my $1000 and puts it in the bank. I get some digital digits. Somehow people think that the dollars disappear. They just exchange hands. Even if Bitcoin goes to one million, the dollars do not disappear.
There are geopolitical concerns that play into the avoidance of anti-trust. The size and scale of the data juggernauts in the U.S. keeps countries foolish enough to compete early with us in the gutter.
Balaji actually directly addressed the net worth thesis. And it’s lifted from the All In podcast guys. Also he didn’t make the bet, he took someone else’s. And Balaji’s take over the past decade has by no means been calling for imminent demise. These guys aren’t shitposting America. They’re building the next thing that’s post the current system. Bitcoin IS building the next financial system, not abandoning the current flawed regime. Scott is great be he basically missed every point here.
A poem by Bing Like a bird, I fly In the sky of metaphors Seeking the sun But the sun is a killer A cocaine dealer A rebel alliance I am drawn like a moth To the flame of comparisons Burning with insight But comparisons are a virus A Ponzi scheme A Trojan horse I need a lifeline A flywheel A crack To escape the eclipse The game of chicken The collapse I am a roach motel A cult A solar core I am a metaphor
I so happy Scott FINALLY learned about Peter Attia. There is a guy that Scott absolutely should have on Prof G and Pivot.
"It's all about trust" Except that it's actually all about misplaced trust and tricking people
Ever seen the movie "This is the End"?
Here after his appearance on Bill Maher
The problem with everyone's reaction to the Saudi statement is they ignored the next sentence - "not, for many reasons outside the simplest reason, which is regulatory and statutory". If they went above 10% there are more regulatory requirements - which they didn't see a need to endure. The interviewee should have definitely made a more level headed reply but everyone else should have understood *why* they're not buying more!

Yes, the Saudi head of the national bank just wanted to say that further investment wasn't needed and they couldn't invest more for regulatory reasons. The understanding of the market was instead that they were not ready to invest more with the strong statement "absolutely not". There are some cultural aspects in there but we can definitely argue that in the situation of CS any words could have backfired and they did. He could have said instead that we will be in contact with Swiss authorities to support CS if we need to but... Poor choice of words in my opinion!
If someone's been investing in bitcoin for the last 10 years they're probably already very well off!
Medical advice on GPT4 raised on internet comments. Hmmm. Maybe GPT7?
You spoke about Bitcoin and finances but nothing said about CBDC. Why? A tyrannical government that is starting their own CBDC is a pretty big deal.
Think more critically about your wardrobe Ed Elison....it's part of what you are communicating .....dress for what you want to say ....it is another tool for you to use ... cheers!

Scott has improved his persona recently. Less bitchy. He had major TDS, which got old frankly as he sounded like he was having a tantrum often. Glad he is more positive and objective now.

we used to have a term for betting against the US... unpatriotic. the term for actively going against the US, traitor. how about picking up and oar rather than knocking holes in the bottom of the boat.

Agreed. Only question is who is the one knocking holes in bottom of boat. Harder to buy a house than ever. Jobs can’t cover cost of living. Lobbying run amok. No accountability. And continuation of devaluing your currency. Your wages haven’t risen since mid seventies. I’m not totally for crypto. But honestly you have to start to ask yourself - who is going against the American people? I suggest it’s the one constantly bailing out the rich.

@@Ausbos5 back in '80 I made minimum wage at 3.30 an hour if memory serves. my server friends got 2 and tips. I graduated from a state college and my debt was equal to my first year salary, 20k I believe. now, I agree there is a lot of entrenched suck in the US, but I have been fortunate to travel a good bit of the world and havent found a country that does it better with the same setup across the board. yes. we need to fix things, but any org over 2 people is by nature corrupt. so we need to be vigilant, stop corruption as much as possible, yada yada. ppl need to be careful what they wish for here, its a fine line between protest and no food, electricity. half my family has lived that. jmtc, peace.

Prog G? More like Prof Try-Hard… amirite?
Are people impressed by a million dollar bet? I mean I would be impressed if he bet something like 25% of his wealth- something that would hurt. But a million - that’s barely a drop in the ocean if his wealth. He sounds like a conman anyway, and people easily fall for these types.
First the guy needed an explanation of why someone with a mortgage at 3% can’t afford to move. Then he had to give Trump credit for criticizing TikTok. Really?!?!
The kid -- If someone thinks they can do better than the current "1000" year old idea, they are arrogant. So basically the early thinkers of democracy were arrogant to challenge 1000 years of monarchy. Ok. Got it. No thanks.
Tik tok gets banned, invest in VPNs
I think you should at least read “the network state” before trying to sum it up….as you did a terrible job of it honestly. Love the show. But you were way off on balajis network state ideas
