Prof B B Lal | 2016
In a lecture at IIT Gandhinagar on 6 September 2016, Prof. B.B. Lal, the 95-year-old doyen of Indian archaeology (and former Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India) investigates the roots of Indian culture, showing how some of them go back five millenniums at least in the light of recent archaeological evidence: from nearly 5,000-year-old Harappan figurines with sindūr at the parting of the hair or folding their hands in a namaste to farmers at Kalibangan (Rajasthan) ploughing their fields in a unique crisscross pattern that remained in use till recently. And much more. Drawing from his vast experience, Prof. Lal will take us on a journey to the origins of some of our everyday gestures and customs, showing that some of them are as ancient as the Indus or Harappan civilization. The implication is that Indian civilization, therefore, has had an unparalleled continuity with the distant past.
