The main actions I want to focus on this year are building a community for productive struggle and supporting productive struggle during the lesson!

I really liked the idea of recording a student's positive math behaviors for a time period and then finding a way to praise, or celebrate, the student for those behaviors. I think it will help the culture of the classroom by helping students see how struggle can be positive and lead to growth.

I'm going to focus on getting my students to begin to understand productive struggle by introducing that to them at the very beginning of the year with some positive brainstorming for what that will look like as we go through the year. I'm also going to provide a lot of practice with it each and every day.

I'm glad you mentioned bringing in the "Got it, Tried it" quadrant into some of the other reflection pieces like journaling; what great idea.

I know I will use the 6.4 Got It, Tried It Quadrant. The different ways for struggle to be "acknowledged, celebrated, and rewarded" provided in chapter 6 are priceless.

I am thankful that I was able to follow this book study. I have learned so much and have gained more incentive about what productive study is. The activities are great tools that I hope to incorporate into my lessons!!

I will prioritize valuing productive struggle - for both myself and for my students and their families. I anticipate a little pushback if the value isn't communicated well and accepted.

Already started setting up my room and added a great work bulletin board to specifically highlight struggle. Not exactly sure how but working on it.

My goal is to work on building a classroom community where students feel comfortable with struggle. I am working on creating anchor charts for what to do when you are struggling. I loved the suggestions on how these strategies work with ELL students. I loved the meme suggestion in the four corners and having students say why they chose that corner. I think the memes would connect with my sixth graders.

I like the background behind Rachel! That is so true!! I agree that evaluation should not always result in a grade. It is a great time to reflect and discuss.

Yes, chapter six helped me see how the reflection competent will really reinforce that we value productive struggle while giving our students (and us) a chance to reflect.

Loved this book study! My plan is to start with building a community for productive struggle. In these last chapters I really loved the matrix and the idea of tracking how they have shown growth in productive struggle.

I am interested in Action 2: Foster Identity. I feel this can really set the school year off on the right track to foster productive struggle. It will be important to have students reflect on their identity and how their identity changes throughout the school year.

🙂 An Aha! moment for me was that there are many ways to incorporate reflection into a closure component of each lesson. However, reflection on struggle - although important - doesn't have to be done daily. I wonder if this type of reflection would lose its effectiveness with students if they were required to do it daily. On the other hand, I also wonder if students who are exposed to consistent coaching will begin to reflect about struggle automatically over time.
