Production Touring Car Race, Warwick Farm Raceway, 1969

Great footage from Sydney's Warwick Farm, 1969. Jim McKeown in the Lotus Cortina Mk2 shows his skill in the wet as he out drives Leo Geoghan's Mustang and Norm Beechey's Monaro to take the win.

I was there that day, it was really wet, terrible weather, inches of water on the track, watching such greats as Frank Matich fly off the track in his own built SR(?), Beechy in his yellow Monaro and not to forget the F1 greats. Most impressed by Graham Hill who had no chance of winning, go back out in the track and drive the pants off car, wet, miserable, loved it all and thankyou Gary Cook for talking me into going.
That Lotus Cortina sounds simply marvelous. What a cracking little car I had the poster on my bedroom wall of one of them taking a corner with a rear wheel 4" off the tarmac. All my pals had the Lambo countach
It showed why we we use to love the Cortina so much power is not ever thing
I remember thiis...what a sh1t of a day. Who remembers those stinky old plastic raincoats we used to have? Some of Oz's great tin top drivers in this Improved Production race. Also recall seeing the great Jim Clark in his Formula One car around this time. He also raced a Lotus Cortina M1 in the UK. What a shame we lost the wonderful International standard WF circuit to developers and suburbia. The horse racing track certainly didn't suffer as much. It still hosts meetings, is a great training facility and has a six star complex with matching hotel...fit for overseas visitors. Surprise, surprise..!!
Aah the good old days when racing was exciting , the cars where simple and a bit dangerous . Great battle there between the corti and the mustang in very difficult conditions .

And a bit of a thrill
My dad rear ended a Lotus Cortina in NC back in the 80's. He ended up buying it from the guy at it's for sale price from before the wreck. 1900. We chopped and rebuilt the rear, repainted it with a custom bumper, and resold it for 3k. Damn it was fast.
Thank you for spoiling the tension for watching the race by writing the outcome in the description :-(
Now that’s what I’m talkin about’ the good ole days when I was 12 years old and racers weren’t all millionaires

because back in the day 100,000 was a million. But yeah. Much more interesting than the racing today. My favorite vintage of racing
Great film! Thanks for uploading

that Mustang is just so cool looking........
What a great drive by Jim and big Pete too
For those of you who are watching in black & white, the blue car is next to the green car.

LMAO
interesting that it's not the outright speed of the racing, it's the 'Racing' of the racing that makes it great.........
Great race, the Cortina's n Mini's were in their element; "wet"
back in the day when racing was racing and if love cars you take part no matter long as you show up and race now days it all health and safety had made hard even just to get in thats with out the car time attack is awesome you can pick your own class show up and race but its what i love about old days i love car racing anything to with it
I don't know how the KZread algorithm chose this recommended vid for me - maybe it was through watching a couple of Touring Car Masters races, or an old British Saloon Car race from the same period at Crystal Palace featuring the legend that is Gerry Marshall driving a mental Vauxhall Firenza - but I'm glad it did. Good choice, thanks.
Back then these car cost 800 900 pounds new and look what they are worth now great video thanks
ahh the memories.. used to watch from the causeway flag marshals spot with my friends father... the Mustang power down, 4 wheel drifting with front inside wheel of the ground... lifelong impression of power and sound
This must have been what it was like when Moffat beat the Mustangs in the US in a Cortina - pity we don't have footage of that

I know Moffat raced an Austin Healey and a Mercury Cougar in the US, unaware of the Cortina?
MUSTANG GOT SMOKED !!!
Funny thing, the Mustangs had V-8's with north of 200hp, the Mini that came in 3rd place had a 4cylinder with just 70hp.

Well, not quite...These Cooper S's are improved production with the engine bored out to max...1310cc. They used to pump out around 120bhp depending on who was tuning it.

The pits & paddock were so basic. I used to go to Sandown in Melbourne at that time, It was the conditions gravel in the paddocks. More than once I was showered with stones , both by Beechey & Jane when they lost their tempers . Beechey never seemed happy & Jane was extremely volatile.😊
Aww I wish this was colour
Wish I knew what month I was born at the end of May that year!
Great video,watched all of these guys at many tracks,my cousin Don Smith,raced earlier in that series with an FJ,then an EH holden.

Anyone remember my brother, mick Jordy, used to race a super mini as Omian Racing?
way cool share
does anyone remember Lakis Manticus in his Broadspeed Mini - a very fast little thing that used to trouble the Mustangs etc. or the V8 powered Hillman Imp of Harry Lefoe - yes that is correct a Ford? V8 mounted in the back seat area of an Imp with a Collotti transaxle gearbox. Holey Dooley what a handful!!
@davidhenderson4883

Ah yes, I recall watching Harry LeFoe at Oran Park c. 1971 - the word was that the Imp's track was greater than its wheelbase which might have contributed to its entertaining handling ;-)

Saw the Lakis Manticas lightweight mini at Warwick Farm late 60s early 70s. It was warming up in the pits. It was the flimsiest car ever, the whole thing rattling and shaking. If the thing had crashed I'm sure it would have been almost certain death for the driver.
I reckon the Holden driver retired voluntarily after not being to catch a tiny 1300cc city car 😂
@flamingfrancis

The 1310cc Cooper S was no more a city car than the big Monaro. They were highly tuned with a motor bored to the maximum and around 50bhp more output than the factory supplied 1275cc.

I wonder what happened to that interestingly looking , race track .

You can go along to a horse racing meeting at WF at least once a month. The standard of the horse racing facility has improved immensely to accommodate huge improvements in training. Some of the best trainers have stables there. A six star hotel facility to accommodate all the overseas and interstate visitors in also at the track. You could probably see some of the former car track at the positions where it used to cross over each other.

Aus government is shit. Where are all these great tracks now. Oh, gone yeah. All the good old fun stuff is gone...
@flamingfrancis
3 жыл бұрын
Nothing to do with any government. You can go there today and walk around most of what was the car racing track. When you are there you'll notice a huge improvement in the excellent horse racing facility. Oran Park was being set up to International standard at the time and it became Sydney's main facility
