"Product Managers build" If this is a statement of what a product manager does, it explains a lot about why there is so much lousy software out there: Everyone is racing to make features and release them as soon as possible. They are not thinking deeply about the user journey when they, for example, keep redesigning their UI for no real reason. A Product Manager's KPI should never be how much they built but how quickly they can discover the true opportunities. These opportunities may involve lots of back end preparation for a future front end release, bug fixing, or just not building while research is done. This is a deeper conceptual task but it is where success resides.

We should be clear Product management role for MBA is about you own a set of products within the company and you ensure the product has high utility and profit yield. You are not making the product on your own rather have a team who produces the product for you. it is like a ceo role. CEO normally have in house r n d group or partners with external oems like sales, marketing, finance, hr, operations groups. Product management for techie is about supervising product development. That involves project and program management. People often confuse the two and try to mix them.

As Ben mentioned we imported his slides poorly, which was 100% our fault. By the time we realized that formatting was imported wrong it was too late because this was shot at a live event.

Half of it was interesting once he got going but just one 'non-product' point. I either, self taught how to ... or I taught myself how to , I didn't self taught myself. I wouldn't say anything but he said it at least three times and it sounds a bit dumb.

When I saw UX/UI merged and when he said he does UX/UI, I got super disappointed. He clearly very green and doesn't know what design/research or product is. Design/research is scientific and should be done by professionals. PMs are not designers and not managers of designers or developers. Each function has their leaders, managers, directors, etc. Product managers are not in the center of the venn diag. PMs want to be the bosses and owners of everything, but they are not. They shouldn't be doing sales and marketing either, it's completely outside of the primary role responsibility. This is quite arrogant TBH. Now, to build amazing innovative products that are wanted by users, that deliver great value to user and business, an equal partnership should be built. A tripod, where three functions (design, product, engineering) exist harmoniously (ego free) and each contributes skills and values to reach the common goal or outcome. My humble opinion based on the 15 years of experience in this industry.

If the PM is not the center of the diagram, then who is keeping all teams on track and on the same page. The purpose of the PM is to make sure all teams don't lose focus or sight on the "why" of a product. So that each team works toward the common goal together and doesn't become silo working on their own projects on different tangents, which engineers and designers tend to do. He's right, you need the PM at the center to herd the cats and keep everyone focused to get the product completed and ready to ship. Otherwise products will never get done.

This was an opportunity for him to thank his designer and engineer bros for doing all the actual work but he went with 'I build stuff every day'. 'I was gonna be a doctor but I didn't like the sight of blood', 'I self taught myself coding and design' and 'I'm literally the center of everything, just check out this graph' instead. How people think this is a good talk is beyond me
