As a soundman it must be nice to work with people like PTX who not only understand what you are asking for, but are completely and totally invested in every part of the process. They're not watching the clock, complaining, and wanting to go home. They are in it to make something special every single song.

The short guy with the glasses, brown beard and hair is Ben Bram, both their arranger and (in this case) one of their recording engineers. Ben has been with them since their Sing-Off days. Mitch is looking tired and distracted through this because his solo EP was dropping that week (for his side project Messer), but once he opens his mouth, he's all business. (Well, except for that one screech in the "overs" for Over the River ... 😆). You saw how many times they tried that phrase and in how many different ways: they are SUCH perfectionists. And how much input Kevin and Matt had, even though they weren't singing on that part! You should check out that video, BTW - it features Lindsey Stirling, whom you saw in Papatouai.

The Videographer/Director for this video is Ben Hausdorff. He’s Kirstin’s fiancé and father of their daughter, Elliana. You can see how harmonious they are both professionally and personally. Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin have been singing together for half of their lives. The band has their own special synergy.

Ben Bram is called Pentatonix's sixth member. Helps with arrangements and has produced or co-produced many of the their albums. Ben graduated from USC the year before Scott enrolled, and had put together an all-star a capella group to compete on season 2 of the SingOff. Scott talked to him about Scott, Kirstie and Mitch going on the show and Ben helped them find Avi and Kevin. The SingOff producers had been impressed with Ben's knowledge of a cappella singing and his arranging skills and had hired him to be on the support staff for season 3, Pentatonix's season. When they won the show, Ben continued helping them with arrangements and some of the early tours. When arranging a song, Pentatonix works out a basic arrangement together, records it and sends it to Ben, who suggests changes and eventually creates sheet music. Then the members usually record their parts separately.

Sorrry but Ben had noting to do with finding Kevin or Avi. Scott located Avi when discussing the situation with a friend, the friend said he knew a super great Bass singer that might be interested. Then just a week before the deadline, out of frustration Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch got on KZread and typed in Beatboxer, and Kevin was the first video to pop up. That is what I heard Scott tell during a couple interviews. Although Ben has been very involved with almost every other aspect of their lives and careers.

I could watch this all day. I'd pay to just sit there for the entire recording of an album and marvel the creative synergy. What a miracle these five people make music together for our ears. It's also nice to see Ben Bram in action, there. He was the one at the piano. He's been a collaborator on many of their arrangements since the Sing Off, and really encouraged Scott to put together a group to audition for the show to begin with and helped develop their signature sound.

I had a feeling you'd enjoy this! It's so inspiring. Both in what they do technically, with how different they are musically (the body percussion part!!). But also in how they interact. Bouncing ideas, communicating in a kind way, even a small thing like Kevin, the beatboxer, thinking a track didn't need beatboxing. There is a reason they've stuck together for like 12 years with only one change and largely the same people around them. It seem like they produce a very nice work enviroment, and THAT is sometimes harder to find than talent. Them having both of it is just lovely

I found it so interesting to watch them learn and record (in real time), a song from the 1940's. "Its Been A Long Time" was originally a song written to welcome home our soldiers from World War II. It's a totally different era and style of music and they internalized the essence of the piece and recreated it beautifully for this generation! Really well done! =)

@@WollisWorld 🤨I don't know what video you chose but in the official video the beginning will explain how they usually work on recordings as opposed to this particular recording. This is a very rare occasion where they got together to record when they usually do it separately. You missed out on very important information PLEASE go back and look for the official video on their channel, even if you do it for your own viewing. The guy with the glasses and on piano is the unofficial 6th member Ben Bram, their long time arranger. Scott, Kevin and Avi along with Ben are the main arrangers, though everyone's opinion is always heard and respected. Mike Dyson is the engineer. 👉👉I can't stress how much you need to go to the official video and start from the beginning, because this video is NOT from the beginning!!

They are all so talented & as you watch the sing off you’ll really see how well they work together. They are better in person than on a recording honestly! So you’re well on your way to having hit all the main steps of their journey and watching their sing off performances is so necessary imo to get a real feel & understanding of who they are and where they came from…they were babies! There’s a collab between them & Lindsey Sterling Over the River I think it’s called….but it’s an awesome upgrade to an old Christmas standard. Their collab with Dolly Parton is really good as well. And if you want to hear Mitch go for days without breathing, their cover of Can you feel the love tonight is gorgeous. Sing is fun as well! Then! Super fruit is the duo of Mitch and Scott and Rise is absolutely stunning. The Promise is also a favorite. And their covers from Wicked! Then Mitch’s solo stuff….particularly his cover of Billie Eillish’s song Your Power… I listen to that on repeat it’s so good. He also performs under the title Messer and those are all a different vibe but really good. Kevin has some great cello boxing stuff out and Kirsten has a couple solo songs that are more pop but fun! Scott has a great song Mars out that really showcases his voice and Avis solo stuff is allgreat imo. Matt doesn’t have as much out there yet but I’m sure he will! Another couple artists with insane vocals and voice control are Adam Lambert and his cover of Chers Do you believe in life after love … Brian Crumps covers of Creep and Man in the mirror…Future Sunsets/David Micheal Franks cover of Skyscraper and Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance w Somebody in a minor key and then Eva Cassidy’s version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow….all worth a listen!

I like these kinds of videos. Most of the public don't realize how much work goes into the making of a song, whether it's vocals or instrumentals and the whole nine yards that goes into the whole song. Musicians work harder than most people realize. Sure, talent goes a long way, but there's a lot of work that goes in behind the scenes. I guess that's why I appreciate musicians so much.

  • @secretarts

The thing is they start playing around with different noises that they have made, often made by mistake, that just kind of sounding interesting. and when the others make those sound for Kevin, he just digest them and turns out magic of beatboxing that is so ingenious that you wonder why it is possible to do that. Kevin makes use of mikes inside of his clothing(in the 1970's we called those plate mikes) to make it possible to amplify the different noises to be part of the sound. They seem to work very well for him.

Did you notice that when they were listening to the Prayer, Scott held out his arms to show his goosebumps? When this video started, they had 2 weeks to arrange and record 10 songs 😵😵‍💫 . If I heard right they bought an old house somewhere around L.A. (built in the 1920's), and converted the ballroom into the recording studio. The rest of the house is the management office.Don't know if you noticed, but I heard that Kevin, the beatboxer has as much control over and does as much for the arrangements as the arranger does. Strange thing I think is that Kevin records the beatbox last. I've always understood percussion was recorded first so that the singer can use it to keep time. But what do I know??? LOL @wolliofficial maybe you can correct me on that.

Check out Superfruit-it’s mitch and Scott from PTX, after PTX was formed but before it really took off, Future Friends is my favorite song they did. I wish they still did music. Those two were born to sing together

I only just noticed that when Kevin said they should get two people to do the body percussion, Scott immediately pointed to Kevin and Matt 🤣🤣🤣

Your reaction started the video about a minute in, so I'm not sure if you saw the text at the beginning explaining the tight schedule and the fact that this is not their normal recording process.

Btw Kirsten is a little clown. Her behind the scenes videos are hilarious. Even when she was performing with a broken leg using a knee scooter. She is SO stinking cute! And Scott is always playing around.

It is great watching this with a music producer, because you point out things most people wouldn't know. In a prior video, you mentioned that Kevin probably was looping his beats, and I think they do some of that, adding reverb and layers, but most of their songs are also done live, with no backup tracks or even much sound processing. They did one song many years ago with a lot of hand percussion by all of them called "White Winter Hymnal", and it would be great to see your reaction to both the original (link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oWVkxtSLeZa8gZM.html ) and a recent live version, which also sounded great (link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l66LtZOOpM2wY7w.html) (new sub!)
