ProCo Rat Mod - Poison Noises Tutorial
Музыка
Edit: The wire bridge around 8:45 is not necessary. As long as you have one wire coming from each anode to cathode junction of the diodes it will work. By this I mean if you take a lead from each side of one of the diode symbols on the board, it will function the same. However if you want the extra contact points, or simply don't understand my subtext ramblings, following the instructions in the video will yield the same results.
This mod will give your distortion some thick low mids. All it requires is 3 Red LEDs, a DPDT toggle switch, and standard soldering tools and equipment. A great first mod for a beginner.

The wire bridge is not necessary, the diodes are on the same lead so just one wire each will do it
I successfully completed this mod on my own Rat pedal and it sounds so, so fantastic! Thank you Poison Noises so much!
I just did this mod on my Wife's rat 2, it sounds awesome. I decided to only use 2 leds for the mod and its a lot easier to just wire the switch off of one of the diodes instead of the bridging. Great video!
I'm starting to get into building and modding pedals. Very good video. Very informative and not boring! Thanks!

Yo dude, thanks for making this video. Its really helpful for someone whose apprehensive about making expensive errors. Subscribed and excited to learn more.

Thanks so much for following! More to come.
Just found your channel. Great info & presentation. Thank you,
Probably don't need four wires going to the board. One end of both diodes will be going to ground so there would be continuity between the two pads at that end. I'll bet that the other two pads have continuity as well as they'd both have to be in the AC signal path. Multimeter would confirm...
Very helpful, thank you for the clear filming and explanation!

That's what I came down in the comments to try and find out! I have Tony Peper's Rocket Sockets, and they're amazing, but that blue one looks useful, too
Im about to install the mod myself, and i was wondering if its possible to add a second LED (not as a clipping source) to indicate which mode it's on, so it only lights up when it's on "mod mode" pls do more of these, it's really helpful to get into to whole diy mod thing, thank you!

Yes you could. You would need a 3dpt switch, and to have the ground of the LED connect when in the flipped position. Similar to a stomp switch on a true bypass pedal.
Great video, if you had the LED's coming out the front of pedal, you would have best looking rat on planet. Just 3 extra holes 🤔
Loving the mod videos
I buyed a rat pedal today and when i tested it with low gain idk why but theres like a ultra distorted sound on the background of the normal sound, can someone help me?
An off topic question, but what are you playing and what into. Can't get that sound even with the stock sound demo you showed.
Poison Noises! Love the name lol

could you do this mod with any other kind of diode in place of the LEDs?
@PoisonNoises

Absolutley. Very commonly, some folks use a pair of 1n34a's.
If I don’t have a switch, can I individually replace each stock diode with a led in its existing place on the board? Thanks!

That will absolutley work. Just make sure that you match the polarity positions of the original diodes.

using 2 LEDs will make it more similar to a turbo rat right?
@PoisonNoises

You got it! I'm not sure if the configuration in symmetrical or asymmetrical in the stock turbo rat though. Turbo usually means LED clipping diodes in just about any pedal
I love you Jordan…I’ve told you before😊
What would be the difference if i only used 2 LEDS for the diodes? Great video by the way
@PoisonNoises

It would have less headroom and perceived volume. Clipping harder in a way that would be closer to the original.
You should try using an on off on switch too, so there's another no clipping mode.

@MrWsaenot

So, with this wiring, the "off" position off the switch would let the signal just run through ? Or would it act as a "kill switch", not letting any signal go through ?
@crimson_sun7274

@MrWsaenot I'm not that familiar with the Rat circuit, but you still have gain stages in the pedal, so it should act as a boost pedal. Again, not familiar with the circuit and I do not know if there are any clipping in the LM chips. But the presence of clipping diodes suggests that the chips act as gain stages.
Is this close to the JHS mod? I have a packrat, but only use the mod setting. The tone is perfect, but a pedal with top jacks would save space on my pedal board.

Ok but there is not reason to solder double cables in the diodes points, just using one diode place (+ / -) would be enough ;)

@@PoisonNoises next to near impossible, it’s top mounted and all of the components are microscopic. You need Jewelers equipment to work on the Lil Rat. Going to get a standard size one now.
This is great…absolute beginner here, but when you change the clipping to the LEDs does it actually make them light up? I’m guessing no but if so it would be really cool to see…
@PoisonNoises
2 жыл бұрын
If you put a strong enough signal into it, yes they will. You will notice that one LED will light up brighter than 2 of them in series due to the forward voltage drop.
Boards usually use 3mm LEDs, you use 5mm. Is there any difference, or is it just for convenience?

There are some configurations that can easily be found on Google to swap clipping diodes. However it is usually more convenient to mount them directly to the switch, as is done here.

SPST VERSION: With the LEDs permanently installed in place of the original diodes, a SPST switch can be used to connect the 1n4148 diodes in parallel WHEN THE SWITCH IS ON. With the 1n4148 diodes switched-in, the signal gets clipped at a lower voltage, so the LEDs (which clip at a higher voltage) have no effect, even though they're still in-circuit. On the circuit board: Replace one original diode with the LED circuit, replace the other original diode with the 1n4148 pair in series with the SPST switch.
