Proclaimers : Live on Letterman 1989 (21 March) - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)
Музыка
A live performance of I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) on David Letterman, complete with an entertaining interview.
To clear up a common confusion, this song became an international hit and seeped into the global pop culture landscape in 1993 when it appeared on the opening credits of the film Benny and Joon. However the song was first released as a single in August 1988 where it peaked at #11 in the UK. This appearance is from March 21, 1989 when the twins toured the US to support their Sept 1988 album 'Sunshine on Leith'.
There are a lot of comments about where they are now. As of 2023 they have released 12 albums and continue to tour worldwide with a fantastic and tight live band. I encourage those interested to check out their live album recorded at the Belly Up in San Diego in 2016. bellyuplive.com/shows/the-pro...

Great guys, they came to my sick little cousins house in Northern Ireland at the height of their fame. He was extremely sick and his wish was to meet them. They flew over and they played for him in his house, all the family met them. The only thing they asked was no media on the day as it wasn’t why they done it. I remember it fondly. Brilliant guys.

Love this story. When my grandma was dying of cancer, my dad wrote a letter to the football coach of my grandma’s favorite team asking him to send her a card. Instead, he called her house and she hung up because she thought it was a prank. Still laugh my head off every time I think of it.

I have been to Auchtermuchty before. I spent 5 days renting a tourist home on Upper Greens road. It is a beautiful village with beautiful and warm people. Me and my children went to an event at the community center. The DJ announced us as a family visiting from Portland Oregon. It was fun to be the talk of the event and the warmth of the people and their friendliness makes want to live there when I retire. The good news is that the closest McDonald's is in Glenrothes so I will be OK.

Let me introduce you to record companies and the conartists that run them. You would think the millions of little girls that screamed their heads off at Backstreet Boys and Nsync made them super rich too, but they were penniless at every point of their fame. Goo Goo Dolls owed about $400,000 after their probably most successful album. It goes on and on. Most bands that actually play instruments tour year 'round and barely can pay their bills. It's sad. This was long before Napster so they can't blame it on anything of the sort.
@mattpotter8725
2 жыл бұрын
@@mtpstv94 Whilst I agree with your sentiment and you're right record companies do take large cuts of bands profits but the sing writers of songs that get played over and over do make quite a bit of money if they retain the songwriting rights to their songs. I'm not sure who wrote the settings of the Backstreet Boys or NSYNC, but if it wasn't them they wouldn't have made that much, although they were hardly poor. The problem probably with a lot of artists came because they lived the high popstar lifestyle without having the income to back it up and didn't put money aside either for when they had faced back into obscurity. I agree they got screwed by the industry, but many had issues coming from their stardom, maybe before as well, and all the issues that came with that.

Hopefully, they had a clause that reverted their publishing to them after a certain period. Most of the time the songwriters get half the publishing rights and the publishers get the other half. If they owned their own publishing they're definitely set for life. If not they're at least half set for life. An international hit like this can generate 10-20 million in mechanicals(sales) and another 40-50 in media spins. This song's in heavy rotation in alternative rock classic radio and has been used in several movie soundtracks. Most notably Benny And Joon. They're doing all right.
They always give 200% in a live performance. Great Scots lads👍

Pat: Scotish is not a race. There is only one species called Homo Sapiens that evolved in Africa and to which we humans belong.
I could listen to that accent forever. Still loving The Proclaimers here in 2020!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kudos to the bassist who probably had 5 minutes to learn this and nailed it.

No matter what people say I L9VE THE PROCLAIMERS
First tape I ever bought as a child, in 1994. My father was like "are you sure you want this one? You don't want something newer?" I was adamant. I wanted this one. I had no idea what was on the tape, I just knew I wanted it. Sure enough, their style has influenced me immensely. Incredible music.
Backup musicians just don’t get the credit they deserve…the bassist was killin it the whole song. Steady and flawless.
Heard them on the local radio .... said to my wife ...these guys are fae Scotland .... she said yer havering chiel.... in Virginia
Great song of the 80's.....
Its amazing that when musicians performed on Letterman their music was better than any other performance on any other shows..Paul Schaffer's band had much to do with it...

His band would perform the hell out of every piece put in front of them. Great band, through all the different members.

I love how they don't even attempt to disguise their accents. They're awesome!!!
