Very excited to see your game in action. You’ve got some novel ideas here married with basic mechanics. That’s great. & aside from the production practicalities you mention, I think a zine form of this works conceptually really well.

As someone that just purchased a color printer for the holidays, this is perfect timing. I feel like sometimes people take the knowledge for how to do all this for granted, so thanks for taking the time to detail it all out. I know it's a totally separate hobby, but it's so helpful.

Funny that you and Robs Tabletop World did nearly the exact same videos on print and play games. A few hours apart. Good video on zines, thanks.

Great topic! I had to learn all of this stuff the hard way, and it was a headache! The only point I’d quibble with is advice about printer choice. Color laser printers are not that expensive, and black and white ones are dirt cheap. Toner lasts forever and is cheap if you get a model that supports generics. If you’re printing physical copies, you owe it to yourself to make the text as sharp and readable as possible!

I had to find a sweet spot with what I could afford (barely making any money these days!) and what had the features I was looking for, and so was happy with the choice.

This is such a helpful video! Just want to say Daniel, I really appreciate the accessibility you bring to this hobby that can often times feel so intimidating, and the enthusiam you have for bringing creativity to your own hobby. Started this hobby interested in the standard boss-battler board games, and discovered your channel when League of Dungeoneers caught my eye. ... Months later I'm loving loving the freedom of solo RPGs (working though a solitary Mörk Borg campaign now), homebrewing Dungeon Degenerates, and all the fun small indie RPGs out there than I can work into other games. Wouldn't have thought!

I’ve always used the thin edge of a bone folder for a nice crisp fold. I find it to a bit easier to just hold it in your hand like a butter knife and just scrape it along the fold like you spread butter on your toast. I really want to get a nice printer so I can stop making pricy trips to the copy shop. Thanks for the tips!!

Very cool, love these kinds of crafting/making instruction vids for gaming subjects. Really nice showing preparation in a program for planning the printing as not too many creators talk about those details. I lack instruction on that aspect,and really have to put aside some time to study that. My lack of a good printer prevents me from making good products. If i cant make decent looking pages or have images that arent blurry or are so delicate that i get hydrophobic over them, then i wont even go to the trouble. (By the way, Rob Orrin is also doing a presentation currently on making game manuals and books, he does spiral binding usually though. As much as i like the spiral binding production, i dont think i will be buying a spiral cutter binder machine.lol they look expensive. Maybe they arent,i keep forgetting to check) There is one creator that focuses on creating game parts, (i cant think of his name offhand, i will find it and list it here) ... and he talks some about printers but doesn't really show making pages, he just shows the pages and how to preplan your layout on pages to take into consideration cutting out for mounting on cardstock or chipboard. Not really that many detailed game crafting vids on utube. I know of maybe three that have dedicated vids series that detail like how to build game boards and tiles and tokens and how to make your own cards, like professional grade construction. Perhaps only two of those are like really exhaustive coverage that has vids for doing every aspect of making an entire game. Cards wise i think ive found four to six crafting guides. There seems to be more card making vids than any other aspect. Making small books and binding game books is the next larger number of videos, think theres about four or five pretty good ones. I took print shop on highschool and i really liked it as we got to use the big production camera , develop the film and then burn the printing plates and run the big professional printing press and then cut the job and assemble and do the binding. We had great equipment to use.I wanted one of the heavy duty saddle stapling machines like we had. We had nice book binding clamps and presses also. We made a lot of notepads for the school, those ya just had to clamp the pages into the spine painting device. (The colored rubber goop that is painted onto the top edge ,or side edge,to bind the pages together)

I loved making this video. It's my favorite on the channel now, but the views and algorithm don't seem to agree. I spent so much time and effort on this, and it's totally tanking. I'm super bummed about the performance of it. I thought this one was going to be a real hit.

FYI: Bone folders and made from either bone or plastic. You will need to read the description. I made sure my bone folders are real bone.

Daniel, thanks for thinking out of the box when it comes to topics! I tried doing this with the booklet version of Cairn, and I was losing my mind. I'm going to add this to my favorites.

If you can afford one, a printer that can duplex 11x17 (tabloid) is awesome. Though, paper can be a bit pricey, especially as gloss or density increase.

Duplex is convenient but not 100% necessary, especially because it can't do 1:1 coordinates on both spreads (useful when you're trying to line fronts and backs for print and play cards or tokens). For zines and booklets, it's okay to do fronts all at once and then backs, or in small batches. Adobe Acrobat is the key, makes booklets really easy :D

@@TheCyberSpidey convenient being the key. It's a luxury, but worth it in my opinion. I haven't printed cards or tokens to be cut, but I haven't seen any alignment issues with booklets using duplex. But, I suspect you are correct about cards and tokens.

@@ike_d5402 Fair enough :D My point was, for booklets mastering Acrobat is key (which is like a 5 minute process). Duplex definitely saves time! I've printed a lot of booklets, thick ones too - I think I wish more for a printer that can do A3 size.

Daniel, A Land in Peril looks so good! I can't wait to play it and I'm glad I got to see it in action. I really like the mix of narration and gameplay you've created. I also lke that it learns in the direction of having a solid gameplay loop and a clear direction of play. It looks so fun!!

Your idea of mixing your mechanics into Procedures to Discover the Path Ahead to test out your game was brilliant. Glad you found a pairing that works so well. Good luck with your development. Your game is my most anticipated game of 2024/ 2025.

I went down the rabbit hole with book binding, the stitching is very fiddly but it allows you to print much bigger documents, well worth having a go and very satisfying. Loads of tutorial videos on here too. Land of Peril looks great - love the retire NPC/die become a hero mechanic. Can't wait for the full release, insta-buy here :)

Yeah - to tell the honest truth, I'm not sure that I have the patience for actually saddle-stitching a book. But I romanticize about the idea. :)

the wrinkling at the side comes from the grain of the paper, just something you have to live with making zines 4 pages-up on a letter sized sheet. The grain runs vertically on letter paper, which ends up running horizontally when folded and bound in the center.

It's the wrinkling you mention at 17:58, the wrinkling or warping at the edges as being caused by the quality of the paper or from the ink. It's neither -- it's from folding the paper cross-grain, which breaks the fibers and over time will result in uneven warping as the paper humidifies. If the fold went with the grain (vertically), you will an even vertical curling (why some paperback covers curl over time). I've done bookbinding and learned this the hard way! great video :) @@TheDungeonDive

Hey Daniel. I enjoyed the combination of a how-to and play-thru. The combination of playing the 'zine and your game was perfect. A great melding of the two. When you were playing on the hex map and you ran into those ancient mountains I was thinking perhaps you could have gone back down to where the miners were and aske them to help you through the mountains. Does either the 'zine or your game allow for conversation?

Yes, but like any solo rpg, conversations will be something brought to the table by the player. There aren’t any mechanisms devoted to them, but they can be done.

Thanks to your channels I've discovered many fantastic games, no one is talking about( Dungeon Degenerates!) And now i am falling into zines collecting hobby. I've completely fallen into Mork Borg world, and planning to run chatgpt narrative driven solo campaign. Any thoughts on this? Or is it not your way of playing? Also I would love more solo operable horror themed RPG recommendations. Thank Dave!

Often when I post links, the links go dead, and then people comment that my links don't work. What I strive to do is speak clearly and show the things on screen, and provide information so that people can find the thing they want at the retailer that they like to support, and that ships to their country! That's another thing. I've posted links before that have terrible world wide shipping, so people outside of the US then come back and ask me for links to get things in their country. I just can't be the Ask Jeeves for my viewers. :) I don't have that kind of time, unfortunately.

Appreciated. I know Dark Venture for one rando example was really small, 5 x 3.5, so I can never really get a handle on what publishers are truly going for, or what players are enjoying... dimensionally speaking.
