PROBLEMS WITH FLY STRIKE

We get the sheep sheared!!!
It’s nearly the end of June and i was starting to worry we couldn’t find someone to shear the sheep! I had been asking around and waiting for my regular lady to come back with some availability but she never did. So plan B was initiated as it was becoming a welfare issue. The hot weather and humidity creating the perfect storm for flies to lay their eggs in the fleece of the sheep, they hatch into maggots and it’s an absolute menace. Thankfully I got a recommendation for a chap called Ben to come and shear for us and he fitted us in at short notice which we were very grateful for!
This video covers the day before shearing when we footbath the ewe and spray the lambs with a fly treatment, the following day we shear! There’s some scenes that show maggots hopefully not too disgusting but maybe interesting and educational to see what happens when flies use a live animal to start their life cycle!
Dale farm is a small farm in the Peak District, Derbyshire . It’s been in the family for 5 generations! So it’s very special to me.

I can not believe you didn’t have gloves on while touching those maggots! Poor girl!

So I have seen others dip the sheep to avoid fly strike. Does that work better? I am sure it costs a lot more then the spray.

I’m not sure on dipping procedure nowadays. We used to dip traditionally here but they made the chemicals forbidden or something

Would it be advisable to get a Sheep Dip machine to have onsite so you can dose the Sheep often to help mitigate these issues?

Probably not necessary, we will spray the ewes with crovect next May to protect them until June shearing

It’s not actually a big cost to get the sheep clipped , when you use a professional they work so fast it’s very skilled and then we can focus on keeping the ewes moving forward ready to go. Most people I know of will hire in a shearer or team of shearers. But that said, it would be useful to have the skills to be able to shear myself. I don’t think I would attempt 80 tho. I’d be so slow it would take an age. Farming requires so many skills you have to pick your battles and ask for help sometimes

To be honest now we have found a new contact I think we will be alright - he is very skilled and shearing is an art form really! Most farmers that I know will use a professional shearer as they work fast and the farmer does another job on shearing day like keep the sheep moving up so the shearer has a constant flow. That said, I would definitely have a go at shearing !
