Ever since I got it my Tamron 50-400 stays on the camera most of the time. Wouldn't sell my 28-200 though. That's the lens I'll use on multi-week hikes or whenever I want to travel light, discrete or just save space. Love shooting with longer focal lengths!

Completely understand this... I just came back from the Dolomites in Italy... I was shocked to see that more than 90% of my photos were with the same Sony 100-400 as you 😂. I just think that was the best purchase I ever made on my equipment bag!

Hi Mads. Instead of using an "average" for your focal length observations, use the "median'. Then you do not get into the problem of a few extreme wide or tele usages messing things up. I am sure the spreadsheet you are using will have a median function. Statistically this is usually explained by looking at the population of a village and calculating the "average" income. Unfortunately for the statistics, among the villagers one multi millionaire happens to live there. 😁

I've noticed this as well as I grew in my photographic journey. I think using a telephoto lens requires a bit more attention to what is going on in the scene to get a good composition, but it unlocks a ton of creative potential. Looking back on my first year shooting (nearly everything wide), I didn't have many "wow" photos. Once I picked up a 100-400 and really learned how to use it, that definitely changed! It's now my go to lens, even over the standard 24-70. Great points!

I recently impulse bought Tamron's 70-300 and threw it onto my a6500.What a fun, lightweight package and I am amazed at how versatile the lens actually is. Because it is so lightweight ( unlike theSony100-400 which is a superb lens but too beefy for me) I can easily pack it to take on travels . I am actually enjoying the 70-300 more than Tamron's 20-40 f2.8 that I also bought at the same time to replace my Tamron 17-28 f2.8. I agree that the Tamron 28-200 zoom lens is the best all round zoom lens, though.

Tele zooms are so good now and as you say sometimes it is not possible to walk to the area where you want to take the shot. The way you put this across and show your compositions is very very good as with the photos . My only gripe with long telephoto shots is DOF, quite simple with wide angle to get photos sharp corner to corner but challenging between the 200-400 range. Another great video very well presented and very well thought out.

Enjoyable vlog and some lovely images, thank you. I think you nailed it re which lens to use is very much linked to the landscape. I live in the Lake District, which I know you visited recently. Mainly, I use 14-30 or 24-70 as I have enough to work with. I use the longer lens to compress the image a bit like your lighthouse shots or the Loughrigg Fell images (where I live) . Again, at the end of the day, it is down to style.

Another great explainer video in a great place. I was there twice last summer, once in the evening and the next morning at sunrise. You can photograph the lighthouse from any meter and the picture is always different. From the street, from the dunes, from the beach or even from the water. A great playground for photographers

Great topic and great video. I find myself in the same boat, so to speak. For 35+ years I HATED telephoto photography. Now...I find myself reaching for a longer lens much of the time. Kinda sorta coincides with the rise of smart phone photography which has covered the typical mid-range to death these days. The longer focal lengths help the photos stand out from the crowd in my eye!

Different photographers, different perspectives on lenses! Mads, you like long telephotos, James likes much shorter and wanders around to get his shot. Who is right? Neither, as you are doing different things, and ‘see’ in different ways as you say. Great photos in this video Mads! Thank you.

I like to have the options telephoto lenses give you, have always used them as I feel restricted with a prime. I dont take any notice of what focal length of any image I take, its just what works as you said. Awesome images too.

Where I live in the Upper Midwest of the U.S., grand landscapes are few and far between. Yet with the 100-400, moody, atmospheric landscapes are well in hand when conditions are right. When I saw how little I was using my 14-30 zoom, not only did I stop carrying it, I traded it in to help pay for a new computer. The affirmation from this video sure makes me feel good about my choices Mads! BTW, the videography in the opening third of this video was some of the best I've seen you do!

Great video. I think the median focal length would be a much more realistic representation of the data.

My own most-used lens is a 24-105 and I'm usually shooting at 50-70 mm. I mainly use wide-angle when I have a very dominant foreground element, and then I usually use portrait orientation to avoid lateral distortion. I haven't had a chance to use my 100-500 for landscapes but I look forward to that opportunity.

Ted Forbes on the Art of Photography had a very beautiful video on focal length signature. I found that very appropriate and had a lot of things in it that I have also experienced. I can recommend that to you and your followers if it has not been seen yet.

I bought a sigma 60-600 and absolutely love it for landscape, majority of my landscapes are shot with that now

Just picked up a Canon 100-400mm lens. I agree with you. My 70-200 sees much more use than my wide angle. Actually, the only time I use that is for astro photography now. I think this 100-400 is going to see all kinds of use, even the flexibility to let me get into wildlife a bit!

Great episode, Mads. The farmhouse in Tuscany (I have shoot it over and over again) is the "Podere Belvedere" - most photographed farmhouse in Italy, I think. When you return to Tuscany, feel free to get in touch - I'm danish living southwest of Siena, not far from Val d'Orcia, and it could be great fun to have a chat in our native language in Siena, Pienza, or some other beautiful medieval city in the area.

I mainly photograph birds and wildlife therefor I have a fairly long lens as my "primary" equipment. That made me try landscapes as well while waiting for whildlife. I habe a super wide angle lens as well ... but I tend to like the compression effect of the long lens more. But as you mention it ... I see more and more long lens landscape photography.

It depends on what you shoot. In Iceland or the Lofoten Islands most of my shots are taken by my 14-30mm lens. In Denmark, Germany, GB or Tuscany I hardly use my 14-30mm lens. There I use my 24-120mm or my 100-400mm lenses predominately.

Thanks for the reminder to use more Tele lenses in landscape photography Mads! With which program did you extract the statistics? Exif viewer in batch mode?

The longer I'm on the road with my camera, the more I get a feeling of my needs in case of lenses. I take a step from my 70-180/2.8, because I rarely use it and when I use it in the fields, I often make the experience that it lacks of more tele, so I change it with the sigma 100-400, that fits for me well. Also my step away from my 24-105, I've tried a few lenses Tamron 28-75, 28-200 and Sigma 28-70 with the result, that I sold all (28mm is not enough for me as all-round lens and I don't need more than 100mm for my all-round lens, when I'm in the fields, I take the 100-400 with my) and buy the 24-105 again and be lucky with it (in the past I found it too heavy for daily carry, I never use shoulder straps, but now I have a new method to carry my camera, where the weight don't matters that much). The next step will be to change the 24-105 with the new 20-70, that fit exact my needs for a EDC lens for traveling, landscape, city, street and so on, and I really just have to change lenses in scenery's that have a need for it, what's mostly planned. Maybe that will force to change my 17-28 with a 14-16mm prime, but that I'm not sure and will see; unfortunately there's no 14-24mm (or near that) with the possibility to use normal screw in round filters, don't want that bulky lenses with build in lenshood and much too big filter-solutions. But the combination of 20-70 and 100-400 look perfect for me, my loved budget primes 35/1.8 and 85/1.8 will ever stay and be good for low light and people (don't shoot people often). But all that is personal preference, what works fine for me must not do that for other photographers.

Hey Mads - you should use the median focal length instead of the average for your analysis. You just sort all the data points and pick the one that ends up in the middle (that's the median). That is less prone to issues like you mentioned (a single 1000mm shot skewing the average).

Mirror less has some advantage to with crop modes. My default is new 24-70 and in c mode can get to 105 on occasions. . In the larger end then my 60-600 can take over or a cheapy 70-200 f4 as a very light alternative

I carry 16-35gm in my backpack but 70-200gmii is attached to my camera most of the time :)

You mentioned that I have to start with "minimal composition" for fewer object and subject. I realised I have to get more tele lens, so I get a 200-500 (nikon), to compose with more subscract of the scene... lets see. :)

The solution for the "outlier" 1000 mm that skews the mean is to calculate the population "median" rather than "mean" (AKA "average"). It is often helpful to also calculate "skewness" and "kurtosis", which tell you numerically if the population of lens focal lengths are skewed more to wide or tele and if the population of lens focal lengths are tightly or widely distributed about the mean, respectively. Your spreadsheets function menus should include the various tests I suggest. I suspect you will find the skewness of your lens focal length population varies year by year more than the median. It would be also interesting to somehow correlation this data with the annual spectrum of photography locations. For example, if one year included a big trip to the antarctic and there were a ton of tele photos from the transport ship, then that will bias the results. All the best.

The 24-70mm or 24-105mm has always been my go-to lens for general purpose or landscape photos. If 70mm or 105mm wouldn't get me out far enough, I would go to my 70-200mm. After that, the 16-35mm if I needed something wider than 24mm. The 100-400mm I tend to use more for wildlife, like bear photos. And my 200-600mm for wildlife, like elk out in a field. Over the years I've noticed that I use the 16-35mm more when I travel to the western US where landscapes are more open. Where I live in the SE US, you literally can't see the forest for the trees.

Interesting observation. Then I learn photography in early 1970s I learn that telelenses was preferred in landscape photography. The trends goes. But You are rigth every picture requier its own lens choice.

Try to use the median rather than the average. Results will be more enlightining

Mads, as always I enjoy your videos and on KZread I see more and more Landscape photographers moving to the longer Lens. But, still like to have the wider angles also. Is there a case for using the new iPhone (or other makes) with wide angle and other options to cover the gap? The carry weight is also a factor on longer walks. The reason I ask this is there is a guy on KZread called Alex Armitage who has done comparisons with the iPhone 14 pro and his main camera. The results are favourable. One thing he did do was Print his results on A3 paper and got students to see if they could tell the difference, again good results. Maybe there is a case after all??

I wonder if a reason is how good smartphones are with wide angle shots. Most of my favourite 24mm shots are with my smartphone while non of the larger than 70mm. Telephoto just stands out more nowadays.

Hey Mads, could you make a video about how the 60mpx of the a7rv are handling the sharpness of different lenses? I was very curious how your 28-200 handles it or if you would wish you had a sharper lens that would resolve better the 60mpx. I imagine that since you're still using the lens then it's good to go for the 60mpx but needed to hear your opinion on this. Would you consider for example the 100-400 lens to be sharper than your Tamron? Thanks for your time putting those videos up

Hi, it's a little bit too specific of a video, but yes, I still find the Tamron to be good. No issues in that regard and it's plenty sharp from 100-200mm like the 100-400 is :)

I wish Canon would release a L-series version of their 24-240. I would happily take 28 on the wide end and 200 on the telephoto for faster aperture and better optical performance.

Mads, You have been shooting with the 28-200mm for a while now. Do you still find it is sharp enough edge to edge to make it useful for professional work. Many (thank goodness not all) landscape photographers are almost "anal" in their obsession with sharpness edge to edge and near to far. I still shoot a lot of large format so I don't have that obsession. Do you fail the 28-200mm Tamaron is better for you to carry than your Sony 24-105mm ??? By the way I loved the series with James both on your channel and his.

Hi Erich, thanks a lot. For pure sharpness edge to edge the 24-105 is better. As mentioned in my review of the 28-200 the weakest part of that lens is the 28-35 part, so I still mainly use the 16-35 in combination with the 28-200, when not using the 100-400. The 28-200 is just so versatile and more than sharp enough.

How to spot a beginner photograph? Asked my friend, a professional Filmmaker... He has a big Tele lens. And the expert rather uses more a wide-angle lens. Because of sharpness and the expert goes as close as possible to his subject... and the beginner doesn't do so! I like to hike and the other is using his tele that is easier... And I don't like to do the artificial effects of a super wide angle or Tele lens.

I find that to be a bit black and white. Different lenses are like tools, you need to use the optimal one for getting the job done. I guess an expert ought to know that ;)

A photographer should first choose his perspective (as in "relative size of elements in a frame") by changing distance to the subject and then select focal length that fills the sensor with intended image. So when we say we like certain focal length more we actually say that we like certain perspective more.

That is true. This is the only meaningful way. All the talk about what would be better (Tele, Wideangle) is totally nonsense. But in my experience the more interesting photos are often created when you take a perspective which includes different depths and will require a wide-angle lens. Telephotos tend to be more simple and thus often less interesting or even boring. But this is just "in general" of course. There are great options for photos with a tele lens and not every "wide" photos is great of course.

Average does not make sense in your examples. You need to look for the median in that case.

There's practically no reason why anyone should use primes these days (unless on the extreme telephoto end). Zooms are so good, why spend premium for a prime when only someone with the eyesight of a Peregrine falcon can see the difference.

I personally hate long zoom lens 🤬 never find satisfied as wide angle images even captured images had compression, subject separation and all those other elements for perfect image. I just don't like minimalistic photography, so like 70-200mm i keep it only for City scapes images . My main lens is 16-35mm and 50mm. 💪💪💪💪

Pretty sure it’s only men that make buildings? I think you might be thinking a little too much about your telephoto Mads 😂 PS there are few enough women landscape photographers as it is without you putting more off with outdated comments!
