Pro-Palestinian protesters interrupt UC Berkeley's undergrad graduation

A group of pro-Palestinian protesters interrupted the undergraduate graduation ceremony at UC Berkeley on Saturday. "This wouldn't be the first time Berkeley's activism led to global change," the ASUC president said in her speech.

I agree with you. People start to care less and less as their lives become more interrupted. Human nature. Even if the problems we have here are not life and death issues; they are still our problems and a concern to us. After awhile people tune these protesters out and just do not care anymore.

They struggle for 4 years and ehen they're finally done and are veing rewarded for their patience, talent, hard work, etc. they see this. :( It's so unfortunate for the students man. This is such a wrong place to protest. Regardless of who fuels your protest, why don't they protest in front of government institutions if that's what they're protesting. Also imagine this, there would be so many foreign students whose parents have struggled to make such money to send their kids here and to see it all end like this. So unfortunate. I myself wish to study at Berkeley for a masters in Financial Engg. and this isn't changing my mind but it's just so unfortunate to look at.

This was my graduation. I was in the crowd, and have footage and pictures of everything that happened. I can give you an exact timeline of what happened. Order of events: - Prior to commencement: 4 uniformed (and armed? Not 100% on that) officers enter the field and disappear into a white tent: they are not seen throughout the ceremony. There are also 2 men in black suits who look like security on the field near the stage in addition to event staff. - Students finish trickling in, commencement begins. - Clusters of protesters scattered throughout the crowd start displaying smuggled flags and chanting. - Emcee warns them disruption will get them thrown out. - They continue, event staff come into the student section. The protesters nearest me evade but eventually walk up the steps. - They descend into an empty section adjacent to the other students and start setting up. (00:37) - Other students trickle out of our section to join theirs, filling it. What was an empty space becomes a black sea of student supporters. - Event staff move to stand between stage and the protesters but leave them be. - More warnings, more chanting over speeches. At one point students stand together and all eyes are on the chanting protesters. "Don't Stop Believing" is played loudly. To drown out chants? To support the protesters? Only speculation, no facts. - Protesters resume chanting after song. Event continues. - Protesters eventually leave at the behest of event staff and their own. I saw a student in a keffiyeh urging them out from near the front nearest the field. - Within minutes, the crowd has dispersed. - Throughout the commencement ceremony the shouts of, "Free free Palestine!" have been heard from outside the stadium. These chants grow louder. - Students gather outside Gate 2 to continue protesting with chants of, "HEY HEY! HO HO! THE OCCUPATION HAS GOT TO GO!" and, "UC REGENTS WHAT DO YOU SAY? HOW MANY KIDS HAVE YOU KILLED TODAY?"

I get that many students and parents were upset by the interruption. That they disrupted a special day. But UC Berkeley has always and will always be aligned with civil rights causes, and I think it's commendable that my fellow students were so strong in their convictions that they did not put them aside for the sake of a ceremony. Protest *is* disruption. I'm just glad our school has remained peaceful, as others have not had such privilege. To the commencement speakers: thank you for your forbearance. To the protesters: thank you for remaining firm in your convictions.

If they interviewed pro-Palestinian protesters about *why* they chose their own commencement to speak up, they left that footage on the cutting room floor. You know how police in the US frequently get violent against protesters? Who do you think they learn that from? Who do you think those people practice on? Whether it be flying out there or having their specialists come here, US police officers train in "counter-terrorism" with Israeli forces. The quotations are not to say that terrorists don't exist, but to emphasize that that training is not restricted to terrorists. If you are against excessive force and police brutality, you have another reason to stand with these students against the IDF.
