Also, for earlier relay dances it used to be just more stay-in-one-line-dance-your-part, it's only more recently that it changed into doing more and making it more intricate for the wow-effect. I love either type, cause in the first you get to see more of their personalities and them just having fun, while in the newer type you get to see more details and teamwork and creativity. The best imo is when they can have fun and be goofy while doing the relays in intricate ways

@Karina 😊 yeah, the 4th gen groups are killing the relay dances 💜 I'm convinced they do relay dances for fun during practices 😂

They don't take themselves to seriously in Relays or even Dance Practices, where they really shine is live performances... they rip up a stage. In 2020 they received awards for Best Performance and Best Stage. They are a group of lighthearted and caring individuals. My bias is Hyungwon 3:30 My favorite dance practices are Shine Forever, Jealousy and No Exit (pre-debut). My favorite MVs are All In, Find You and Follow. My favorite vocal-centric live performance is UR and rap live performance is Sambakja (Jooheon and IM).

something that is important to remember is that they all have different parts. the members come up to the front and try their best to do the moves but if it’s not a part they’re in, it’s hard and that’s why these are so fun to watch. but if you don’t know what the dances look like, i think you’ll miss out on the fun. relay dances aren’t really to show off how cool or complex the dances are and you miss a lot of really nice choreo moments. dance practices are the best way to see the dance in its entirety and all of the cool moments.

Blond energetic guy in Jealousy was Minhyuk. Ball of electricity that he is. The guy who you refer as guy with the suit is Shownu, band leader, lead dancer and lead vocal.

Please react to Hyungwon's "How long?" Choreography. The footwork looks so good.

It's more recent that the relay dances are taken so seriously with group work etc. for all groups. So when you watch older relay dances for any group there will be less group work.

Check out more of the dance practices. They don’t go as hard on relays it’s more relaxed and hyungwon the lead dancer refuses to dance 😂😂. The one you pointed in jealousy is shownu he’s the main dancer. My bias is Kihyun, I live for his vocals.12:13

relay dances aren't mean to be taken seriously by idols i feel like. it's mostly for them to dance and have fun while doing other members parts although recently i feel like idols have been taking it more seriously and screwing around less

The older relays are definitely more casual and less rehearsed! That's why you're seeing a difference between let's say Jealousy and Love Killa... when this style is video started it wasn't meant as an extension of the performance, but more fun fanservice. If you want to react to pure choreo the dance practices and studio choom videos are the way to go! I'd also like to recommend Shownu and Jooheon's dance cover of Side to Side - they learned and filmed in under a day while on tour :)

Relay dances used to be more of a fan service, extra piece of fun content that tested the members knowledge of their choreo (especially for parts that aren't theirs) it was never meant to be serious, just funny and playful. It's only in recent years that it's evolved and started to become more serious and is used to really show off dance skills of a group. Dance practices were ,and still are, there for the more serious stuff (There are playful versions of dance practices too though) I'd recommend just enjoying them for what they are, or stick to relays that are from 2019 onwards if you're looking for something more serious.

@@Krystal109 I like it both ways tbh, whatever the artists want to show, I'm happy to receive! But I admit there is something special about the goofy, playful stuff... it is a great way to experience each members unique personality, and how well the group vibes together. As for MX, I especially love watching Hyungwon vague out, look off to the heavens while desperately searching for the choreo he needs to dance next, and watching the vocal and rap lines clown each other when they land on each others parts 😂 Relays were never meant to be used as an indicator of talent level etc. Things just got crazy competitive along the way, and now everyone is out there showing off (which is great, but let your hair down and have fun with it too sometimes, you know?)

8:14 that's Shownu and he was a backup dancer before he debuted with Monsta X, which is why he's an incredible dancer and always goes hard. He's the main dancer for a reason.

My favorite member is hyungwon. He’s the tall guy in dramarma who ended up just standing there lol. He’s actually the dance leader. He’s actually an amazing dancer. You should defiantly check out his how long choreography. He choreographed it by himself. Hyungwon is also the one in all white in Fantasia with the blonde in his bangs. There earlier dance relays it was more of them being silly and goofing off. But there relays now they are amazing. You should defiantly check out some dance practices. besides the fact that some mess around more than others, you have to remember that the original dances contain formations where not everyone dances, or they all do something different. So because it's a relay and all the parts are mixed up, there are often times they don't know the dance and either try their best to copy it, freestyle, or just mess around on that part im surprised you haven't said anything about it from how many relays you've seen by now; even without knowing the og dance, you can definitely tell if that dance is generally done as a unit or has lots of different choreos going on at the same time

the voice you heard in the end of fantasia relay dance was the staff telling them to "move this side"

Oh, and that voice at the end of the Fantasia behind cut is one of the production staff. I'm assuming she said that they weren't centered in frame because they leaned a little to the right to adjust 😂💕

I think if you are looking for EXTREMELY powerful performances then I would suggest their Shoot Out and Alligator comeback performances. You can really feel the pops and locks in those dances, and the choreography to those songs are just amazing in general. For choreography that’s more smooth and sexy Jealousy, Beautiful, and Dramarama are definitely songs that showcase those aspects the best. Like other comments say, they shine the most with their live performances, they are a group who has always excelled with that, and to be honest that’s all you really need in order to really grab the attention of people and gain fans. Their live performances have always been phenomenal, their dance practices are also great to analyze but fan cams of their live performances really showcase their professionalism and expertise in dancing.

Yes, definitely check out their dance practices/MVs/live performances if you are interested in more serious performances. Monsta X are known for their synchronization and performances, they always give their 100%! Their old relays have always been more for fun and messing around. The newer ones are more serious and choreographed, but I actually personally like seeing them have fun and be silly! Monsta X are top tier performers, and they always give great performances, but they’re also really funny and silly guys at heart haha. I love their relays because they choose the member lineup randomly, so most of the time they are actually performing other members’ parts, which of course often has interesting results. It’s fun to see members doing different parts and how they express it, or they might mess up and improvise if they don’t know the part, you never know what you’re gonna get lol!

I think you should react to their dance practices, its really something else, they're all incredibly good dancers!

Shownu is my bias, the leader of the group and the main dancer. You have pointed him out several times bc of his dancing. He is the one that typically mouths/sings along to the part he's dancing to so he can get the timing and moves right. You can spot him smiling at the person dancing in front of him before he goes.

Jealousy is probably one of my faves... Kihyun's adlibs are lit. You should see the whole dance practice or one of the live performances to see how great the choreography is.

The thing with Monsta X relays is that most of the times their choreo for the rap parts aren't really choreo and more the rappers showing off and they tend to improvise a bit of moves, so when the relay ends up with one of the vocalist in the front of that part, they don't know what to do and so they goof it off before moving on. Sometimes the same applies viceversa.

The reason Fantasia is so much more "production" is simply because it's newer. The older relays were just fun fan service, but somewhere along the way they started to plan out relays to be more of an extension of their performances and less "let's just have fun".

All of these dances deserve the full choreo to be appreciated. The relay dance is just fun

I really miss these old days when the relays were impromptu and improvised based on the members coming up and leaving whenever. Nowadays the boy bands plan it all out ahead of time, so the right people are up at the right parts. It's more silly when they just dancing to it randomly and stuff like Kihyun going blank at 4:10 and Minhyuk being shocked at 5:18 happens.

Yeah if you’re looking for more serious content you should be watching dance practices. Relay dances were originally just for fan service and to see members dance other people’s parts. Hence why Monsta X didn’t take the relay too seriously when it first started. It’s only recently that the relay dance has become more serious. Defs encourage you to check out Monsta X dance practices. They’re well known for them too. :)

Not sure if someone explained (I know this comment is super late lmao) but in DRAMARAMA the parts where people were standing still are because there's a lot of splitting the group up in that choreo. So at 9:05 when Hyungwon is standing still that's because at that part that's what he's doing in the choreo. Minhyuk and Kihyun are dancing with Jooheon while he wraps and the rest are behind them waiting. So yes he was trolling but also not really xD a lot of times when they look lost or are doing goofy stuff it's because it's a part that they don't know the choreo of whoever is supposed to be dancing. As for me, I don't really have a bias because I love all of them

I'm not sure if there's been a change in direction that MNet's been going for with the relay dances. Maybe they decided they wanted a more "serious" tone (I doubt it though). For the longest time, they were just like other fun content during groups' promotions period. Maybe it's more of just a matter of the idols already having gotten used to relay dances, so they're not as goofy lately.
