Pro Audio with Bitwig, Reaper and Windows VST plugins on Linux

Музыка

Linux is an incredible platform for professional audio.
But it can be tricky to setup.
To help you get going with a pro audio Linux system, I've developed a simple script for you to run.
In the next 5 minutes you're going to take a vanilla Linux installation and turn it into a music production powerhouse using Bitwig and Reaper, plus also being able to run your favourite Windows VST plugins on Linux.
Let's do it!

This script solved it it for me this time. Now i can focus on learning reaper and the things that i wanted to try. Great work! thanks!

Yep, I've spent waaaay too much time over the years formatting disks, installing new OS's, and configuring them. Linux audio has been very painful in years gone by. But it is much better at the moment, and Pipewire is a big part of that. It's still unfortunate that many of the big name plugin developers aren't offering native Linux versions of their plugins, but we do have a pretty good selection of native instruments and effects, and it's slowly getting better.

What Waves plugins do you rely on? Of course it would be fantastic to move wholesale from Windows to Linux and use all the same plugins, but Waves doesn't support Linux, so there's always going to be some risk. I wonder if it's worthwhile looking at what plugins you can migrate to? For example the Analog Obsession plugins run brilliantly on Linux, and there are many vintage emulations in there that (to my ears) sound as good, or better, than Waves.

I can get pipewire to trip over itself under extreme edge cases, but apparently there's config to resolve that. For me anyway, whether it's the config, or my hardware, the CPU doesn't struggle at all. Have you experienced some CPU issues? What's your setup?

Unfortunately iZotope doesn't work on Linux. There is no way to authorize the plugins, as the iZotope installer requires certain cryptography that doesn't exist in Wine. We can only hope that the crypt32 functionality is added one day. I have the full iZotope suite that I use on my Mac, and it would be good to use it on Linux. All I can suggest from my experience is to use Fab Filter for the parts that you can replace (i.e. comp, eq, limiter, saturation etc). I haven't found any way to run RX on Linux, and haven't found a replacement plugin for it either. Some things we just can't do on Linux yet sorry!

If you consider yourself "tech-savvy" then I think Arch is the clear leader. It has the best Pipewire implementation plus it runs all the audio apps natively (as opposed to Flatpak). If you're relatively new to Linux, then I would suggest Ubuntu or a variant (e.g. elementary OS or Linux Mint). On modern CPU's and with the 5.10 or later kernel, all Linux variants will run audio tasks very well.

Assuming that you have setup yabridge per the script instructions, if it is a VST2 DLL, you can copy the .dll file into $HOME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Common Files/VST2. If it is a VST3 then you can copy the .vst3 file/directory into $HOME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Common Files/VST3 - and then, regardless of whether it's a VST2 or VST3, run yabridgectl sync and yabridge will do the rest.

VST still doesn't work for me in linux (some probelms with winehq that can't access the drives) but that it unrelated to that tutorial and script Reaper works great and the latency is just marginally worst than on windows. Good enough for tracking; with 128 / 48000 it gives 5.2 ms latency If someone uses the ancient Terratec EWS88MT/D, just install "quasmixer - alsa" and set the gain for each cahnnel ....envy24 mixer works too but wuth less control over the audio card. For Nvidia users, do a timeshift snapshot if you plan to switch from Noveau to proprietary nvidia drivers Very appreciated Air Audio Studio !! Thanks again !

Incredible job! Considering for a long time to "jump" from Win10 to Linux, and I saw this video. Man, I must say that I'm impressed! My main concerns for making the "jump" (other than Kontakt) are my audio card, a Focusrite pro 40 and my Liquid Mix 32 devices. Am I gonna have any troubles with them because they are firewire based and not Usb? Or even better if you could do a tutorial based in firewire settings?

  • @linuxaudiotips

Unfortunately I don't have any Firewire interfaces, or any Firewire ports on my computer, so I'm not able to do any Firewire experiments myself, sorry. Firewire is quite well supported on Linux now, so if you have a spare computer (or if you can dual boot) then I would recommend installing Linux and giving it a go. I think the Firewire protocol is well supported in general on Linux, it will just be a matter of whether your devices obey the "standard" well enough, or whether they use proprietary functionality. I generally don't like to suggest to people "just buy a new interface", but that is often an option. Depending on what features you actually depend on with the Pro 40 and Mix 32, you could potentially be served better by a newer USB interface that is known to work with Linux, and the functionality of the Mix 32 is likely covered very well by modern plugins.

Incredible! Thank you for the script and walk through. Do you happen to know how to setup - Composers Cloud and Play/Opus from sounds online? - Kontakt 6 with the NI Installer? - Cubase 11+? - Ensemble Pro from VSL? Any help on those would be most appreciated. The above are the last remaining obstacles for my port completely over to Linux. Thank you very much.

Hi Charles. Sorry for the very late reply. I have been away from Linux the last 12 months and on Mac (spatial mixing). Unfortunately some things just don't work on Linux at the moment. The closest you are going to get to Cubase on Linux is by using REAPER. But if you are a composer (as I suspect you are based on your questions) then you are still going to miss some Cubase features, even though REAPER is absolutely incredible. I haven't tried (nor do I own) any of the CC/Opus products. Kontakt 6 (and thus almost all sample libraries / instruments) will run on Linux, however NI recently updated Native Access (now version 2) and that doesn't work on Linux, so you will need to use Native Access version 1. I am investigating other ways to install NI products, e.g. Kontakt 7, without requiring Native Access 2. Cubase 11/12 I just don't think are going to be viable on Linux. And Ensemble Pro I haven't tried, sorry. I'll try those plugins if they have demo versions, but it's hard to purchase and test every plugin! Almost all the Spitfire plugins work, all Arturia plugins work, Fab Filter... I have over 900 plugins (most of them Windows VST) running on my Linux machine, so there's a lot of choice - but it is not for everyone. If you are entrenched (and productive) in Cubase as a composer, it may very well be that the best place for you to be is where you are.

Hi Bill. What Linux distribution are you on? I updated all the scripts this weekend, and I highly recommend that you use a distro that supports Pipewire (I suggest KDE Neon or Ubuntu 22.04). Pipewire should be able to detect and setup your 32 channels correctly. Make sure you select "Pro Audio" for your audio device. In KDE you can do this by right clicking on the volume icon in the status bar, selecting "Configure Audio Devices" and selecting the Pro Audio profile.

Line 27 is "sudo pacman -R pulseaudio-jack pulseaudio-lirc pulseaudio-rtp pulseaudio-zeroconf manjaro-pulse" so it's possible that one or more of those packages isn't currently installed. When trying to remove a package that isn't installed, an error is thrown. You can copy the script to your local drive, remove that line, then run it again, and it should run to completion.

I tried doing this on Pop OS but Cadence only lists a dummy driver, gives a warning for the kernel, even though liquorix is installed, and i can't change any settings. QjackCtl does recognize everything, so i have no idea what's going on... Catia seems to work though... Also, your script installs wine-staging 7.21, and yabridge outputs errors with this version. It needs version 7.20 (which i have no idea how to install). So yabridge doesn't work, i tried adding a VST with it, it gives me an error. Good guide though!

Thank you for the script and the video! I have been working with my brother on a project getting his Windows audio installation migrated from Windows to Linux. However, one person with Linux experience cooperating with another person with audio experience does not seem to be enough to get the job done. When I look into the script, then it becomes obvious, that without the script and the video we would have gotten absolutely nowhere. Reaper and the VST plugins are the highest priorities and those are doing fine. Unfortunately, we cannot get MIDI to work properly. When configuring Cadence as done in your video from 04:12 to 04:25, we do NOT see "ALSA-MIDI Bridge is stopped", but "ALSA-MIDI Bridge is not installed". We are both using fresh installations of MX-21, which builds on top of Debian 11. Therefore, we used the install script for Debian 11. When googling for "ALSA-MIDI Bridge", I ran into the "a2jmidid" - demon, which is in the distro, but it is not installed by default. Installing it does not solve the problem described here. That brings met to the QUESTION: which software package and/or configuration is responsible for the missing "ALSA-MIDI Bridge"? I checked all 130 comments, but MIDI has not been mentioned a single time. Apparently, it is not very important for most users. However, NOT having MIDI is like giving up the race with the finish within reach. Regards and many thanks from Munich and Amsterdam to Down Under!

  • @linuxaudiotips

    @linuxaudiotips

    2 жыл бұрын

I haven't used MX, sorry. When using a vanilla Debian or Ubuntu install, MIDI has worked fine for me at all times. I suspect that MX is not installing a package (probably a2jmidid) that is required. I don't have the facility to install MX and test at the moment, so I can't help solve that particular issue right now, sorry. However, I can suggest that while you did install a2jmidid, perhaps it wasn't running? You can open a terminal and execute a2jmidid -e to run it. If you are using Bitwig, I think Bitwig communicates directly with MIDI controllers using ALSA, so that should work straight away. Reaper may require a2jmidid, and it will have to be running. If you have a spare laptop or PC, perhaps you could try a vanilla Debian or Ubuntu install and use that as a test machine for bringing your brothers audio workflows over to Linux. Once you're satisified he can do what he needs, then you can replicate the install on your main computers.

Tried lots of different things, keystrokes, yelling - even a xterm, setting the shell and different keyboards, but no joy! I can't even accept the default "Yes" with Enter? I'd really love to get this working as seems lots of potential... any advice or am I missing a step or something ?

I've had a number of people mention weird control characters at that point. I suspect it might have something to do with piping the script to bash via wget. What I recommend is either 1) download the script to your computer and run it directly from there, or 2) use the Pipewire script (which I recommend anyway for Ubuntu 22.04, as Pipewire is generally a better option now). Let me know how you go.

@@linuxaudiotips Hi Brendan - Yes it seems to be something like that? Although I can’t definitely confirm - as before your reply I’d just done two things to address (that’s silly I know, which one worked?)... I downloaded your Ubuntu 22.04 JACK script to run locally; but I also commented out lines 39-45 and ran those lines individually before running your altered script in my bash terminal, as there seemed to be no early dependencies. That worked well, and no keyboard cursor issues with the jack2 config dialogue. Then got Reaper running solid and was able to install lots of Windows free plugins plus via Wine/Cadence/Yarbridge process. Thanks - game changer for Reaper! I did try the Pipewire version on previous fresh 22.04 - no install issues but I had trouble with Windows plugins - but that was probably me not understanding the manual processes required… I think I got it now. I agree the Pipewire option should be better as I understand its more integrated into Ubuntu 22.10. I see you’ve started a script for 22.10. Happy to wait for that to be finalised and I’ll give a Pipewire install a go in a fresh 22.10. So good this stuff !
