Priya Purushothaman: Raag Shree

Priya Purushothaman, the young and talented Agra gharana exponent, was the opening artiste on Day 2 of the FEA-curated Khayal Rang festival. She is a disciple of Vidushi Aditi Kaikini Upadhya and has also received taaleem from the late stalwart Pandit Dinkar Kaikini. Currently she also receives guidance from Pandit Sudhindra Bhaumik and Smt Shashikala Kaikini in Mumbai.
At the Khayal Rang festival Priya began her recital with a paramparik (traditional) composition called "Saanjh Bhayi" in Raag Shree. This was followed by a bandish entitled "Guni Gun Nihaar" that was composed by Pt. SN Ratanjankar.
Priya was accompanied by Swapnil Bhise on tabla and Dnyaneshwar Sonawane on harmonium. Tanpura support was provided by Akshay Vardhave and Swati Gorad.

I am completely blown away by this deeply meditative presentation of Raga Shree. I can only think of one other Shree that has moved me so deeply - that of Pt D V Paluskar. My congratulations to Priya.
गायनामध्ये मंत्रमुग्ध, अंर्तमुख होणे म्हणजे काय ते विदुषि प्रिया पुरोषोत्तम यांचे गाने. अप्रतिम राग !श्री !त्यांचे गायन ऐकताना असे वाटते कि त्या आपल्याला कुठेतरी आनंद प्रवासाला घेवून चालल्या आहेत. तंबोऱ्याची आणि हार्मोनियमची साथ त्या बरोबर चाललेली आलापी खूपच छान. तराना अप्रतिम. वाह क्या बात है ।

The depth, thehrav and meditative quality in Priya Ma'am's singing is rare for the present generation.

Listening to many stalwarts whole day listed on Rajan Parrikar’s blog on Raag Shri. Was wondering why Gurugranth Sahib lists this raag at very start. Why it helps one in meditatation.. After Getting mesmerized by Kumar Ji’s Shri with Madhyalaya ‘Karan Dere’ and great Tarana after that, this is one rendering of Shree that stands out because how well the Dhrupad like Nom Tom has been used to create essence and Mahol of Shri. Priya Ji indeed is very gifted and dedicated singer. Would look forward to hear her other kritis...

Exactly my Thoughts sir . Her nom tom alaap , very much like alap jod jhaalla of the Drupad style approach. Bols are slightly different but the feel is same. Her voice has always come across as a clarity personified. Choice of bandish so relevant to timing of Shree. Superb @Priya Puroshatamam

Although she comes from a different Gharana, her approach to Raag presentation reminds me of legendary Gana Saraswati Kishori Amonkarji. No hurry, no acrobatics, very meticulously build the Raag's mood (Bhaav), no hurry to wind up. Look forward to hear much more of her performances. Thanks for sharing this treat.
