Better luck next time, I wonder what is deeper down in those holes... They'll probably never dry out enough to find out. Cities used to have garbage pick up, I know my town had a few garbage services. I read about it in a 1890's newspaper. No way to tell where it was though, I did find a massive 1920's-1950's dump, must be at least an acre and a half. Found a few porcelain signs there worth around $400 all together. Also found some telegraph insulators worth $30 for the pair and about $100+ worth of random bottles. It was about 20 hours of back breaking work. I think 20's - 30's town dumps are usually more rewarding than poking around in privies. That is unless it is a 1800's privy then nothing will beat it. I know of a few early privies in my town but getting permission is another thing, the person who owns the land is an out of towner. I doubt I'll ever find a late 1800's city dump where I live, just weren't enough people living in Ohio at the time. I will continue to try to find privies but most of them will be 1920's - 1930's and in that date I would prefer to dig a dump. You don't find porcelain signs in privies! Look forward to seeing more videos, happy hunting.

Yes, but I have found a better faster way. Get the WORKS toilet bowl cleaner in the white bottle with bent neck. put a little in a dish and after you have washed the can and dried it, dip a toothbrush into the acid and just spread it over the can and lightly scrub it for 3 or 4 minutes, then soak in water a few minutes.

Some guys have luck using cleaners like that. I encourage trying citric or oxalic. For a test of citric, try this on 3-4 old flat tops: Mix 1 part concentrated lemon juice with 4 parts water and let em soak overnight. You might be surprised. Try it on any rusty but solid cans you find in 30s-50s dumps, or any rusty artifacts. I have a small collection of dumped bottles. What should I soak them in? CLR, vinegar, bleach? I don't find enough bottles to warrant buying a tumbler.
