Private Pilots Visit Inside Manchester International (EGCC) Air Traffic Control

EPISODE 2 - We've just flown a new Cirrus SR20 G6 into Manchester International Airport EGCC. We've been invited to visit NATS Manchester Air Traffic Control and understand more about how the airport operates and the wider knock on effects which happen when there's an infringement of controlled airspace.

Thank you for an interesting video. In the late 50's and early 60's my father was an architect for Manchester city council and designed the original development of the airport at that time. I have an embossed letter at home inviting him to the official opening by Prince Philip. A few years later he bought an airband receiver, and in those days you had to have them tested before you could use them on the airport. There was public access all over the roof of the terminal building and both piers, including toilets and a shop. My father knew many people working there, so when the test on the radio was being carried out, I was given a tour of the control tower, which, as a wide eyed 10year old, I found totally fascinating and which I have a very strong memory of to this day. Sadly, my fathers efforts are to be demolished in a few months time as the expansion of terminal 2 continues apace, but this video took me back to that wonderful day and my impromptu guided tour.

Sprout and kidney soup-still a very nice design and opened in 1962, will they keep the original atc tower, i ask because Heathrow demolished theirs in 2013 along with the queens building and T2, but have left in situ terminal one 1968 and the heating house 1955, the only original part of heathrow left!!

Ben, this video is Awesome in so many ways, so to you and your team, all the teams at Manchester Airport (my local ) a massive Thank You for every minute you shared with us at Manchester. This video for me got the message of why you should not infringe controlled airspace and the trouble those who do cause. Your channel is growing because it’s not all about being behind the controls of the aircraft but giving us your viewers a look at the bigger picture of all things Aviation. Sincere Thanks. ✈️

Great stuff. Noticed the Mode-S set up in the tower, just before you went out on the balcony. I have my own Mode-S receiving station set up at home, so can fully appreciate what happens in the tower and I have visited the old tower a couple of times in the past. The only basic difference is that, where you had to use a tab/icon to bring up the aircraft details. Mine are on the screen and moving with the aircraft. I have registration,Mode-S code, aircraft type, squawk code, flight number, heading, airspeed, altitude, and operator details. Mine are set to different colours White for in the level cruise, Red for descending and Blue for climbing. It started off as a very basic Kinetic Avionics SBS-1 Virtual Radar, but over the last 10 years or so I have added so much more detail on screen, such as the Lat/Long of local towns around me, so it gives me an indication of where they are in relation to my centrepoint( which is my house and receiving aerial on my roof by Lat/Long) but I can overlay the screen with waypoints, other smaller airfields, NDB, VOR's, etc. But that just complicates my screen, so keep it simple with the local town locations. I am not a pilot, just a spotter, and have been for over 40 years, I just used the technology available to make it more interesting and keep a track on what is around my area (Stalybridge) and about 25 miles all around. The only place I lose traffic is when aircraft get to the Stockport Railway viaduct for a Manchester 23R arrival and drop down below my aerial receiving horizon, simply because of topography as it is line of sight, and also lower down you get, the more curvature of the Earth and distance away plays a part, the higher the better for clear line of sight.

I worked in the airport for 6 months it was cool seeing planes take off and land but it was very stressful you would need to go through security every day which is understandable for people`s safety, but you would need to arrive 30 mins before start of shift to arrive just on time.

Annoying. Did a tour of MAN about 25yrs ago of the customer service side which was very informative. If they still offer it, would recommend.

In 1985 friend & I setup a pirate radio station, we were both mid teens and full of curiosity & bravado.. just as most teens are, not so heavy on brain power & experience that i have to admit, we were in Gatley..not 3 miles from Manchester Airport.. by accident we flicked the tuner on downstairs onto another channel, sure enough, voices out loud saying they were 500 meters from source and closing, damn, you never seen 2 kids move so quick, 20 seconds later about 12 vans drive past with eyeballs squinting everywhere, we dodged a bullet. Week later we rec”d a hand written letter from the russian state broadcaster radio station thanking us for our persistence in breaking the backs of imperialist masters. 80”s was a f’d up time.. not going to lie.. manchester airport has moved on a lot since those days... ps, 1981 stood on spectator deck writing down airplane wing numbers whilst eating bread & jam sandwiches, still to this very day, with no word of a lie, still haunts me as the coldest & most boring day of my life.. F plane spotters, you guys are mental...
