Private Concert - G4 2017 Joe Satriani, Phil Collen, Paul Gilbert playing "Superstition"

Joe, Paul and Phil playing Stevie Wonder's "Superstitious" at a private concert for the G4 Experience 2017. They start with the song and then slide into a long stretch of shredding and improvisation. It was amazing to get to watch these legends just relax and show off a little.
Keep your ears open for when Paul plays a bit of Van Halen and Joe responds with some AC/DC!

Trust me as a bassist it’s almost mind numbingly hard to do that. All I want to do is rip, but some times l just have to hold down the low end and support the guitarist and just enjoy what your part of and hearing. There is always time in the performance to let loose and take the spotlight.

Paul is my favourite player ever BUT, imagine if everyone just plays "inside" that context. Contrast between music voices is always better when you wanna make sure they all get their spotlight. Joe Satriani has made some of the greatest, most mind-blowing guitar music of the past two or three decades. Always has been one of my favorites and a master to measure others by. I know this wasn't a competition, but... Paul Gilbert for the win? From his phrasing, to his timing, just the way he listens to what's going on around him and of course his amazing technique, and soul, and humor...just spectacular! A joy to watch these guys play and have fun together. Grinning from ear-to-ear. Thank you for posting it!!

Once I watched the clip, and read the comments, I felt a bit upset about Phil Collen because of the lack of people mentioning him, which reveals quite a lot of the watchers think that he is not at the same level as Satch or Gilbert. For those that could consider that way, let me provide you a slightly different point of view: I cannot be sure about this, but perhaps I could be right if I say that Phil Collen thinks and feels [regarding himself] as a band musician (and he has been a band musician for a while...), and that's why he does not play the guitar-divo-frontman role as fine. But you can take for granted that if he is in the show, the other two G3's are sure about they can rely on Phil's abilities not to be just another "simple addition" on stage. So, in spite of so many people opinions, there is an undeniable fact: he has already had recognition from JS and PG, and it should mean something for any rock guitar fan. (I must confess that there is another reason, apart from their outstanding and enjoyable music, for me to love Def Leppard: they tend to prioritize their mates over their success. This way of undersanding their career deserves all my respect and admiration)

So much fun to watch! And all these guys are great! Gilbert is still my favorite and here’s one reason, and it’s a reason why I love Roy Clark as well: besides being such a joy to listen to they are also fun to watch! When you see how much fun they are having you just can’t help but feel it too! If either of them two couldn’t play a lick I’d still watch them play air guitar if everything else about them stayed the same!

This is amazing seeing this now, this is from one of several jam nights at a camp at Asilomar conference center in California, where Joe hosted several great musicians for a whole week He also gave some amazing talks regarding surfing with the alien, as they were celebrating the anniversary of that release Also at the camp that week were Stuart Hamm, Jonathan Mover Warren Demartini Doug Doppler, and several others on the teaching staff I’ve been lucky enough to be a professional musician for 25 years, and I knew that if I went to this camp I was gonna learn a ton and I was absolutely right. I left incredibly inspired, and I play piano mostly! They also had Tommy Emmanuel that same week The energy vibe spirit and musicianship was simply over the top beautiful the entire week If anybody reading this is wondering about attending something like this in the future, I can’t recommend it enough it’s totally worth the money I did this instead of a vacation that year LOL Cheers everyone!

Gilbert is probably the only guitarist on this planet who plays way better now than when he was younger. He left apart most of his 80’s shredder gimmick for more rhythmic and melodic solos. Also, i was waiting for Another One Bites The Dust quote around 11:00

Sometimes the competition thing exists between men on the same stage, but this seems a delightful departure from that mindset. If the listener sees (or hears) something different than you and I do - heck, 'not much we can do about that! These guys are there for the adventure! You stretch me - and I'll stretch you. Stretching is a good thing! 'Doesn't sound much like Stevie Wonder though.
