Meg Morris - Given that she was in the show from beginning to end, they should really have given her a rags to riches type storyline, where at the beginning of the series she is just a warden, and then over the course of the series she becomes Deputy Governor, Governor, and finally towards the end of the series, she becomes Head of Correctional Services. That arc would have given Meg more scope for character development and made her more interesting. Also it would have been more appropriate for Meg to have that long term story arc as she was a prison baby. Prisoner Cell Block H could have been the story of Meg where she rises from nothing (prison baby) to a position of power within the service (Head of Correctional Services), the Top Dog of the Department as it were. We could have seen a more business-like, authoritive Meg emerge as she rose through the ranks.

I still remember the exiting feeling I had as I watched this. Knowing Joan's number was up ...fantastic end ...

You cut out the immortal line that shows Joan and her most vulnerable and weakest, when Rita makes her first appearance to 'The Freak' in the cell. Joan: "I trusted you". A brilliant end to a fantastic show.

Boy, you could actually read the credits. The version we received in America had a bunch of names in paragraph form, but this was the guilty pleasure. I remember staying up just to watch this on channel 31

God I love this show

Bea's character was written out as having died in a prison fire at Barnhurst. The actress who playerd her, had moved on and was engaged in other projects.

I've often thought that a nice final twist would have been when Ferguson gets to her new prison out West that the governor turns out to be Colleen Powell and that Bea Smith was working there as a social worker

She had other work commitments, and the writing staff correctly judged that her character had reached a point where her coming back and forth would cause issues. The staff for Prisoner were very careful with how the series went, which showed in the quality of the program as the years went on.

I jumped from episode 195 to the final episode, could recognize no one but Meg.where is everybody else?!!!!!!

I think when Joan was sent to solitary on her arrival at wentworth, they should have brought bea back just for the last episode to give Joan her last meal and then bea could have said "guess who's back" that would e one good ending :)

It certainly was. It is a shame the producers could not have arranged for 'Bea Smith' to have made an appearance!

lehman left because she said she had exhausted the character of bea smith and it was becoming repetitive, they begged her to stay and asked her back twice after she left but she refused.

Joan looks set to be alive AGAIN in 2014 in the second series of Fremantle's remake 'Wentworth', judging by the trailers!

what I don't understand is how at the end they say Rita died at 2 in the morning, but when the freak get sent to solitary there she is?

@mycatsdead My favourite character of all time was Bea Smith, quite a likeable rougue as long as you didn't cross her. I had a friend he was quite fantical about it. Brand new VHS tape went in every week to record the episode. I haven't seen hime for years. Bruce if you are out there do please reply to this message!

I agree: If Fergusan had taken the money and walked away from Wentworth she could have moved to another Country and started life afresh and never have had to look at another prison: however i believe that the police had laid a carefully prepared trap which caught the Freak with the loot thus enabling the Freak to come undone and have to face up to all her mistakes:

After many years and much nagging by fans, it sort of has. A series called 'Wentworth', which mixes the old characters with new storylines, like a deck of cards, has premiered on Australian TV, New Zealand TV is mid-series and it comes to the UK's Channel 5 in November. Much grittier, but really has the stories, the passion and the premise we crave from the good ol' days. If, at least, without the shakey sets!

Don't argee, really annoying to hear fan's of the show slagging the actor's off, most of than were professional and yes some lesser actors were not great but val Latham, sheile flowance, fiona spence and so many more were brilliant. Shame on you and apologise

what i want to know is ? why didnt they play or shout .ding dong the witch is dead. at the end. been more funny . great stuff anyway. love cell block h. sunday nights will never be the same since it finnished. and this is 10 years and more. we watched every episode or my mates dad taped it and then we would watch it. awesome.

@jayinmancs Hi, Yes there could have been a number of different 'endings' to the series. I think the freak was such a 'bitch' the programme makers thought they ought to give her a taste of her own medicine with a spell 'inside'!.
