The butterfly tattoo is one of the most respected tattoos in prison gangs of you knew anything about prison tattoos. Go read up on the Mexican Mafia “LA EME” and you’ll find out.

My "brother" did tats in prison he did my 1st tattoo on my hand and my friends also back in 1981 when he was released. 3mos later he is back at SLO for 25yrs... Sorry to say he has passed away now only 5 days before his release. due to his 2nd heart-attack there. love u animal

I just wanted to say that having tattoos will not lead you to a life of crime, to join a gang, or go to prison. It's like saying that the spoon made me fat or the pencil made me misspell a word. The person chooses to commit their own crimes, get their own tattoos, & because of their own wrong doing & law breaking, end up going to prison. If the gang members or prisoners choose to have their tattoos, that's on them. They are very beautiful tattoos & the work in the black & white medium is fabulous! Just please don't blame people's crimes or even when they reoffend on body art! I have over 16 tattoos & have no plans to stop! Some people hang their art on the wall, I choose to wear mine!

The tattoo artists are learning a marketable skill. The tattoo industry is huge and tattoo artists are well paid. If they were smart, they would have a prison tattoo shop along with the other jobs programs. Then they could use real equipment and have sanitary conditions to prevent disease and infection. (Obviously you'd want to have rules on placement and prohibit gang and racist tattoos)

That the first time I’ve had to not skip the ads just to get a break from the volume on a video!

I have only watched the intro and can tell already these people have a promising career ahead of them!

Music ruin the whole documentary.

Freddy is an amazing artist. It's crazy that from behind bars he started a trend in tattooing that spread outside of the bars all over the world! It's such a great story.

@@jessemuratalla826 Actually yes he was the first one, that’s pretty much a well known fact. Yes the masks were around before Freddy, I’m sure people had gotten them tattooed at some point, but Freddy is the one who put them together with the phrase “smile now, cry later”. The clown faces are very old, but using them as the smile now cry later theme in fact was created by Freddy.

The music is so loud, hard to hear the commentary
