Prison, Gold & Grapes | Jaffna | North Sri Lanka Part 2 🇱🇰

In part 2 of our Jaffna journey we visit Fort Hammenheil, a former island prison, the Alcatraz of Sri Lanka. We then go back into Jaffna Town to for jewelry and gold shopping. Kristina buys some earrings, while I buy some 60rs. (35 cent) Jaffna Cigars which were actually quite good and a great gift to bring back to friends in the rest of Sri Lanka, especially Colombo as it's a rare thing to see.
We then go to a grape vineyard called Garden of Eden where we're able to eat fresh grapes off the vine, and pick our own to buy at wholesale prices to bring home after. Lastly we visit the Jaffna Lighthouse, Beach, and the Keerimalai Sacred Water Spring which is supposed to have natural healing waters.
Fort Hammenheil is now resort, run by the Sri Lanka Navy and operates two distinctly different units. The restaurant is in the mainland while acommodation is in Himmenhiel Fort, in an islet situated about 500 metres out into the sea on a small, private island that was formally a prison.
This fort was originally built by the Dutch and later captured by the British had been used as a prison for notorious prisoners due to difficult access. The rooms are numbered Cell No 1, 2, 3 and so on. Four of these cells are now comfortable bedrooms still within a prison setting. They are offered to discerning clients seeking solitude associated with luxury and comfort. The gardens surrounding the rooms are beautifully maintained. Benches strategically placed in the shade provide privacy overlooking the vast seas beyond.

Lord Buddha was not a God and prince Siddhartha was an ordinary human being went on to develop his mind and learnt the technique to overcome greed and thereby gained the enlightenment. She was a lovely sales assistant and she should stick to selling! J&K: Thanks for exploring the Jaffna peninsula- what a beautiful place!

I am a Sri Lankan Buddhist. Buddha was born hindu as a prince named Gothama Siddhartha. He introduced a new religion called Buddhism based on Hindu teaching back in 250 BC. Basically, this new religion remove cast system and made every living being equal. Buddha is recognized as a saint under Hinduism. Laughing Buddha has nothing to do with Gothama Siddhartha. It is originated in China around 10th century. By the way. There are many Buddhas. Gothama Siddhartha is one of them. He is not a God but a human being who attained enlightenment. In sanskrit language, Bud means intelligent and Dha means above. The man who is above intelligence is called Buddha. It is said that Buddhahood can be attained by practicing yoga ( union with whole universe) and meditation (keeping that union for long and long and looooong time) This practice will take the meditator to the universal consciousness which is called Enlightenment. From that point onward, he or she is in a Buddha state.

This is still kinda wrong though. Hindusim which is now in practice didn't exist during Gautama Budhha's time. These were times when "Vedas" existed under different castes. Laughing buddha is not a part of Buddhism at least in Sri Lanka. Because we have "Theravada" Buddhism in practice here.

The way you have taken the videos of our forgotten landmarks, great hospitality and the way of life we took for granted really touches your heart. Thank you. I hope more people living in Sri Lanka and abroad (like me) can see your video blogs. I also hope people can see what the northern part of Sri Lanka could have become if not for the politicians without empathy or vision and a 30-year long ethnic conflict.

I am a Sinhalese living in SL and I believe that people from any number of religion can co exist peacefully if we stop listening to politics and banish raaga ( too much of desire) dvesha ( hatefulness) and moha (stupidity) from our hearts. How blessed, if we can all think that this whole earth belongs to all the living beings and with that, have not countries and religions. How did we become so blind. We are here to live peacefully and die peacefully. People wake up.

When I see this vineyard an old incident came to my mind! When Madame Bandanayaka became prime minister in Sri Lanka( she was also the first woman PM in the world) she curtailed number of imports such as Onion etc. During that time hard working Jaffna farmer got a bonanza! They became rich! Once madame B visited Jaffna. She was welcomed by Jaffna people as a heroine and was garlanded with grapes, onions etc. Unfortunately in 1977 Mr Jayawardena, ultra liberal man came to power and cancelled all the restrictions which had been imposed on importation! Within 2 years time our farmer became a pauper! I feel very happy to see this young vineyard owner and the results of his labour. I also feel happy that these people have started their farming etc. after the unfortunate war! These people are hard working and innovative! My gratitude go to both of you for sharing with us your beautiful experiences as tourists. In our young age Hamon Hill insular prison was much in the news because Young revolutionary Mr Rohana Wijeweera had been incarcerated there! He was assassinated in 1989 by the government forces. During Madame Bandaranayaka’s time Mr Wijeweera launched his first rebellion against her government , but being a kind mother she didn’t kill him.( there were killings, of course, but she personally didn’t order killing of anyone.) My congratulations to both of you who are genuine tourists! Mandawala Hamuduruvo

"that's nice your mother was very kind " .Bandaranaike attempted to reform the former British Colony of Ceylon into a socialist republic by nationalising organisations in the banking, education, industry, media and trade sectors. Changing the administrative language from English to Sinhala, she exacerbated discontent among the native Tamil population, and with the estate Tamils, who had become stateless under the Citizenship Act of 1948. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sirimavo_Bandaranaike

jaffna and trincomalee are absolutely beautiful places as even i have visited. but due to the war and things many people dont know how beautiful places they are and the government has not developed the areas to accomodate many travellersand even still today so many years after the war you can still see so many houses that have been absoutely destroyed by the war and has never been built again, and sometimes all of the military activity can be really annoying.

In this video at the jewellery shop a misleading theory about Buddha and Buddhism was given out. The laughing buddha and the Lord Buddha aren't the same. Actually I didn't even knew that there was a Hindu God named Buddha. The lady at the shop said that he is the God of fortune and money. That there is the solid proof that he is not Buddha. Greed is the main source of the pain. Greed for money and other properties, and love itself will bring you pain. So Lord Buddha who was the heir to the throne of the biggest kingdom in India, who had 3 magnificent palaces, who had a beautiful wife and a son ; left it all behind and lead a simple peaceful life. In Buddhism it teaches us how to have a simple peaceful life for it will bring us true happiness and joy. In Hinduism they always put their fate in God's hands, but in Buddhism we learn about pain, reasons for pain, and how to deal with it. So clearly these 2 are completely different religions. Buddha was once a man but after he achieved enlightment; it's said that he was no longer a human, a demon or a God. He is someone above all this, that is why he is called Buddha. In the video the lady says the name of the God as Kubera, so it's pretty obvious that it's a different person for Lord Buddha's name is Gautam. Thank you.😊

To add more to this think that the name she used 'kubera' mostly refered to the king who ruled sri lanka before the times of ravana the sri lankan demon king ravana defeated the kubera and won sri lanka and ruled it perfectly ❤️ sso yeah kubera and buddha are totally deferent persons in different eras
