Priscilla/Elvis and Me MOVIE vs TRUE STORY

Sofia Coppola's movie Priscilla, starring Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi, is an adaptation of the memoir Elvis and Me which Priscilla Presley wrote in 1985. Here my review of the movie and book, and find out how the movie compares with the true story as told in the book.

I watched the 1988 made for tv movie of Elvis and Me and was going to make a video sharing my thoughts. But tbh I don't have much to say about it. I thought it was just fine, and while it is more detailed due to the longer length (though I would say it also takes more liberties than the new movie) I didn't find it as captivating as the new movie. In my opinion, the performances are better in the new movie as well.

My friends didn’t like the actress who played Priscilla in the 1988 version. I’ll have to watch the new movie. I like the detail of the 1988 movie. They use to make tv movies with so much detail which I miss in biographical movies.

I noticed she never explained why she went back to her Maiden name when she divorced Elvis 🤔 but went back to Elvis last name after he died 😳 and it’s written online that Elvis didn’t want her to use his last name after divorce . And everyone forgets Elvis was engaged before he died meaning he had moved on from Priscilla . It’s hard to believe anything she has to say as it’s a one sided version of his life compared to what his real life was like.

In either case, it's based on one side of the story; no one has ever heard from the other side because Elvis died before the book or the movie were written and he didn't discuss his private business. Add in dramatization and the need to make $$$$ off of the project negates any possibility of ever knowing what the actual truth was.

IF Elvis had lived Priscilla Beaulieu would never have opened her mouth about whatever problems existed in the relationship and marriage. She would never have cut off the supply of endless money from Elvis. She began disparaging Elvis only after he died, and she gained a level of control over Graceland by convincing Vernon Presley to sign trusteeship of the estate over to her when he himself was very ill and was dying. Thank God the major trustees on Elvis's will was the Commercial Bank of Commerce in Memphis Tennessee, who stopped her from selling Graceland which is what she wanted to do . Most of the public are totally unaware of the truth about Priscilla Beaulieu she has told so many many lies and the Film that this channel is talking about was also full of lies and monstrous exaggerations.

The problem with all this is because when u come out with a book then later a movie and u try and paint up u not having any flaws yet tear the orher person down is not the true story it is a 1 sided story how u paint it up to be but not the actual because u can not have the truth without both sides. Plus the fact that she has lived off him for most of her life and still is living off him to this day. Yet have no problem painting him out to be a monster. Even to the point she fighting to be buried in Graceland sorry she is not a widow she is he x wif abd that was by her choice no she does not have the right to be buried in the family plots.

Yes Cathy I know. My mom loved Elvis and in our house there was alot of Elvis so I remember alot of the things u brought up which is why u really want to throw up because she has lived off of him forever and she is still living off him. It is disgusting. I did read the report lately where Lisa Marie reached out to Coppola expressing to her she did not like how the film would be painting up her father so much in this negative like and this was not who he was and this is her own mother that Lisa Marie is not going along with this. I haven't forgotten her own faults. But here she is and has been painting in up so bad yet on the flip side she keeps considering herself as a widow which she is not she is the x wife and by her choose. Then to go after her grandchild over her daughters will and now fighting to get buried in Graceland are u kidding me. The person I feel sorry in her life is her son who is treated by het like a dirty little secret. She had just kept herself up into trying to have everyone and everything keep her in every aspect of Elvis all the while this child who yes is an adult now who also ended up having a hugh addiction problem but I can't help but think how Percila has handled everything I believe he had to feel like a 2nd hand citizen. Smacks of a money grab. Let’s not disguise the intent here. Casting a 6’5 Elordi and 5’1 Spaeny was not accidental nor was the timing of this film’s release. Much has been made of the Coppola touch. This was hardly subtle or sensitive. Now I understand why Elvis’ haters were salivating over its release. Plenty of feedback already given describing a snoozer with no depth and a vapid take on what could have been something worth watching. And let’s not forget that her tell all book has already popped up as a film. I’m left wondering why and questioning both the timing and the intent. Some walked out. Wishing I would have.

i have such a problem with the height difference. it's unfair. the height difference unconsciously tells audience members who would like to see elvis as the monster as this giant man who physically towers down on the sweet little victim princess priscilla. I think sofia did it on purpose, and it's really messed up because if you're going to play real people you really should give an accurate physical appearance even if the face may not be the same. they could have at least chose a priscilla that was taller, but since sofia wanted cailee, they should get picked someone else to play elvis. but there's too much elvis in the media. i wish he could rest in peace. Oh yeah, others have told me how they felt the movie left them with an unfinished and dull feeling. not a great cinema example.

I am reading Careless Love right now and Peter guralnick brings up how Elvis was very lonely especially with his mother's death during his time in the Army so we always wanted to have family around and call the people back home. It was a great movie. This movie was lacking because it focused too much on Elvis's negative side. Lisa Marie wrote to Sophia Coppola, begging her not to put this movie out because it would disgrace the family. I truly think a better approach for a movie called "Priscilla" would to touch on her time with Elvis, but show us the empowerment -- what she did after Elvis, her movie career, her celebrity boutique, her time on famous soap opera Dallas which was huge in its day. "Priscilla" made Priscilla look like a victim, and she wasn't. She had options -- a family who loved her, younger siblings, and money. She wasn't some teenage runaway who came from an abusive home. She KNEW what she was into (maybe not at first) and she just wanted Elvis....PERIOD. I disagree with you that Elvis was manipulative and a gas lighter. I just think he was emotionally immature and his growth was stunted because he was surrounded by "yes" men. He didn't know how to be an adult because everyone was at his beck and call and no one stood up to him. He was this great talent who got fame at a very young age, couldn't handle it, couldn't handle the loss of his mother, and just went off the deep end with prescription drugs. So, now you have a woman, in her 20s, dealing with a husband on drugs, cheating while she's trying to be mother, and trying to find herself. It was a prescription for disaster. Priscilla Presley shared her story nearly 40 years ago in her book and that first movie, "Elvis and Me" which was awesome. No disrespect to Sophia Coppola, because the soundtrack and visuals were astonishing, HOWEVER, we could have done without this dry, flat movie -- a script that hurt Lisa Marie so badly before her untimely death and while she was still mourning over her son's suicide. Priscilla Presley needs to move on. Linda Thompson moved on. Ginger Alden moved on. It's time for Priscilla to move on too. C'mon Priscilla, you are better than all this riding on the coat tails of your daughter's father for decades. Please, move on! (P.S. -- LOVED Austin Butler as Elvis! He was the best in my humble opinion).

I’m a guy so maybe I can’t appreciate this movie as much as perhaps a woman can. Though, the two ladies I was with felt the same. I found it a bit boring and Elvis’ life certainly wasn’t. I dislike very much the manner in which it was filmed. Most scenes were dull in color and dark. I kept wanting to turn the contrast up but it was at AMC so I couldn’t!! I think Elordi did fine in his portrayal, especially his voice. That said, he looks like an ostrich in the few seconds where they showed him moving/dancing. Thank goodness they shied away from that. It was Priscilla’s version, so very smart to stay away from Elvis as a performer with Elordi as the actor. However, not having the magnificence of Elvis’ talent on display diminishes the movie. The Baz movie was somewhat flawed but still phenomenal. Austin was fantastic in his portrayal, particularly in the performance scenes. I don’t believe Elordi could have pulled that off no matter how many dance instructors and months he would have to prepare. Austin was special and he should have won the Oscar.

priscilla was not forced to stay with him for so many years .why did she want to marry him if he was so abusive to her? but that was very clever of her, because leaving him without being married would not have left her with all the money she got once she was divorced. why did she want to keep his name since it must have remembered her of the terrible he gave her!?if he was the love of her life, why did she have not only relationships but quite „a few „ affairs „ with other men - and not all of them took place after their divorce! she certainly was not as innocent as she pretended to be. she was and is a very calculating woman , making money of elvis , who cannot defend himself. that is why she did not talk about all these negative things while he was still alive? that is the attitude of a coward! and last - but not least - why for heavens sake does she want to be buried in graceland, the place she was so terribly unhappy? well, honestly was never her strongest point -anyway! i have listened to a lot of the interviews she gave over the years . she does change her stories quite often - she is either lying or her memory is getting worse. which is no excuse! if she has any decency left she would not talk about the most private/intimate things in her life with elvis. it is disgusting , but it certainly sells well and makes people feel sorry for her! the only one to feel sorry for is lise.marie! why she played no part in the film is obvious ,because it would have shown what a terrible mother she was! she should be ashamed of herself ! coppola fell into her trap, believing her story blindly and ignoring that there are always two sides to a story! a good filmmaker is expected to know that! very disappointing! i am 72 years old and only after having seen the film „elvis“ - by accident - i become interested in his music and himself. the only song i remembered was“in the ghetto“ and at the time i played it endlessly. now i love to listen to all of his songs - his voice makes me feel so good. and no matter what mood i’m in , there is always a suitable song. i am glad my daughter made me go to see the film . we will not go to see „priscilla“, because i am not interested in „gossip “ of the worst kind. one more thing i would like to add! i am not naive or blind when it comes to elvis as a person. he had his faults, weaknesses and and it must not have been easy to live with his lifestyle . it must have been difficult for him too to live with himself! i think the day he died he was lost and just wanted to go home. i am happy for him because he did not have to suffer any longer and listen to all those stories about him - the only privacy he ever had is where he is now!

Great insights! And I agree. I find it fascinating that you are 72 and only became interested in Elvis recently after the new "Elvis" movie -- and you know so much already! I'm 60 and Elvis was my mom's generation, not mine. As a kid I "hated" him because he was forced down my throat, always on the record player. My family took me to Graceland the year after he died and I was excited, but not fanatical about being there. I met his Uncle Vester Presley and had my photo taken with him. I was only 15. It wasn't until I moved out that I started appreciating Elvis's music and going to see all Elvis tribute artists. I only have 5 Elvis albums, but I know so much because my family was so into him. When my grandmother died, we buried her wearing her Elvis watch. She loved him. Now the more I learn about Elvis, the more I love him as a person. He was so kind and generous. (Though he should have been more honest with his women. Not owning up to cheating is so immature. Just tell them you're not a one man woman and let them figure out if they want to be with him or not. Linda Thompson said she knew there were other women and she turned a blind eye to it because she loved him).

Thrill of Your Love, Fame and Fortune, Lonely Man, I Was the One, A Fool Such as I, And I Love You So, Lonesome Cowboy, and Tomorrow is a Long Time. I Met Her Today. Of course there are dozens of others! What the general public doesn't understand is that though Elvis had a reputation as a rocknroller, that was not really why fans love him so much. It was the hundreds of BEAUTIFUL ballads. And the fact that he sang from way down deep in his soul. By the way, if you want the best version, always click on the one with the picture of the album. Too many others are re-recordings and junk pieces that were not meant to be released. Oh, yes, and a few more that he recorded as Priscilla was leaving him and after she left him. Lord You Gave Me a Mountain, (he sang that right after she left him) Midnight, You Were Always on My Mind, Your Loving Arms. By the way, I've been a fan since 1956.

The thing is, the movie deviates from the book making changes that make Elvis look like an abuser. She did the same thing when she made the FIRST movie off her book, the movie Elvis and Me. In her book, she had a scene where she was about to leave Elvis but was at his show in Las Vegas. She said he called her upstairs to his room and that "he took me very forcefully(not forcibly). It was unlike any other time he had made love to me. It was uncomfortable." In the MOVIE, it became a scene where he viciously RAPED her. Asked later if he had raped her she said, "no I guess they put that in for drama." SHE was one of the producers on that movie! She didn't have to let it go out that way! For DRAMA she let Elvis be portrayed as a RAPIST! She knows very well that millions will see that movie and think that Elvis was a RAPIST but very few will see the interview will see the interview where she said it didn't happen. The same is happening with the new movie Priscilla. Several changes were made from the book to make Elvis look like an abuser. She has said she thought it was good, but now she seems to be backing off of it, saying she really didn't have that much to do with it. She was the main PRODUCER on this one! It took Elvis fans many years to realize that she had a beautiful face and a soft voice but this is an EVIL woman.

"mommy where are we going" and Priscilla said, "we are going to see daddy but he is going to be sleeping for a very, very long time." So in this case, I believe her.

i think the priscilla movie was unfortunately just trying to show one victim instead of showing two victims who were trapped in a toxic relationship. it doesn't show the complexities. some people may be very appalled by saying there were two sides but i honestly think fair judgment is needed. especially after reading the last train to memphis and starting careless love. the movie shows a very dark caricature of a man instead of the human of elvis. yes I know its a preiciall movie, but if they needed to focus on her life with him then without him, they should give an honest and fair account of his side, even though his side will never been actually known. i think it should be a warning of the unfit love and the fast of fame and celebrity and how it is appealing but everyone can be hurt, it's a sad story that should not be judged quickly, it needs to slowly be taken in and taken account of the time and day of when the things occurred. I think misjudgment and misinterpretation is too common now. their were too people lost in a relationship and i think its because they honestly didn't know each other or what they wanted, they had pre-informed ideas of what the other one will be and they were both unable to meet them.

Priscilla's book is a made-up farce by a jealous ex-wife who has spent her entire life living off of the Presley name and money. She has been caught in numerous lies and she was never the innocent little angel she purports to be. I am so sick of movie reviewers thinking they now know what a narcissistic scoundrel Elvis must have been. He was not at all like that. That stance seems odd, given that it is quite easy to find dozens, if not hundreds, of provable lies from Priscilla over the years, making it foolish to take her varied accounts at face value. If Elvis were really the monster he’s portrayed as in this sophomoric film meant to appeal to and enrage the mindless ‘woke’ mob, there would be corroborating evidence over time: police reports/complaints, hospital records, eyewitness testimony, criminal charges, etc., from other victims. Physical and sexual abuse is never a one-off event, nor is it ever confined to just one victim. Where is the avalanche of other victims, who suddenly feel empowered by the brave decades-long confessions of a bitter ex, finding the courage to come forward with their horrifying accounts of suffering at the hands of their now-deceased abuser? Perhaps Elvis’ legacy and reputation is being sacrificed on the altar of fame and fortune for the benefit of a privileged ex who is no doubt comforted by the unlikelihood that her ‘abuser’ will rise from the grave to defend himself.

i think this was a good analysis. but i think the nuance of Elvis is still needed to give a fair look of a relationship and what it was like. it paints a hypocritical and dark view which can be confusing with austin's complex troubled human with the highs and lows of fame. and honestly that influences how people like to judge. because this movie would case judgment either way it would have been better to have a deep nuanced look on the two of them. The focus on this movie was really their relationship and Priscilla's time with Elvis, the two people should have been accurately formed and still show priscilla with greater focus and her transformation to leave him and find herself. but i honestly think cailee is too short and elordi is too tall, priscilla and elvis had an average height difference, and i think that height difference was on purpose to make elvis look more domineering which isn't fair because it creates pre informed ideas just based on looks. Austin was of similar height and is like a natural blonde blue eyed man like elvis which i think was a more impressive touch even if he doesn't look like him. no one will look like elvis.

I was thinking about how we got two great performances back to back of Elvis and i've decided that it's because the source material has become more accessible. There are so many more videos, audio, etc freely available online for people to study to better understand him, his cadence, his mannerisms etc. I wondered if the acting skill has just improved, but I think it's just access to source material. But yes, Jacob did a phenomenal job, and to be honest, had Baz's Elvis not come out the year before, I think Jacob's performance would be lauded.

Where either the book or the film actually true? The truth is that Priscilla learnt that this person knew Elvis and approached him, asking if she could meet Elvis. He didn't approach her. She tracked down Elvis knowing that he was in Germany and she did the chasing. Then when Elvis went back to the states, there was a two year gap before they saw each other again. Other than that they spent a great deal of time talking on the phone. Priscilla's story has continually changed and evolved over the years. each time she has spoken, her stories have become more outlandish and increasingly darker on the subject of Elvis. She was and remains, solely interested in the money. Elvis was her meal ticket. And has continued to be even in death, now she is after her daughters money, now that Lisa has passed away. She is a sad excuse for a woman. She ruined her daughters life and now she is attacking her grandchildren. TCE

Great review of both memoir and movie 👏👏👏👏👏. Elvis and Priscilla had created such idealized images of a perfect woman and a perfect man that it became impossible for them to fit in those images. The real man and the real woman had different (even incompatible) needs - the age difference per se is not to be blamed. In fact, in Baz Luhrmann's movie Elvis, Priscilla is pictured as an Elvis's ally (against the colonel's impositions) and the age difference is not shown at all.

@@WhytheBookWins Elvis's marriage to Priscilla was to a certain extent orchestrated by the colonel. Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13 year-old cousin, which was a scandal at the time. The colonel, of course, didn't want this to happen with Elvis, as he was focusing on promoting Elvis's comeback from Germany. There is even an interview with Elvis that he feared having talked too much about 'the girl he left behind' in Germany. Three has always been a crowd - he still had a girlfriend in the US...

I saw the movie this past weekend. I have only a couple of comments, I DID like the movie but I felt it was awfully "quiet", I know Elvis's music wasn't permitted but I believe Priscilla had a much more fun, happy time when she was with Elvis. I have a hard time thinking the only words she said to Elvis were "thank you" and "ok". I think the 1988 made for tv movie based on her book captures more of those good times and how it really happened. The next big issue with people, her being buried in the meditation garden along with the Presley family....first that is Riley's grandmother, Priscilla's blood runs in the family, half to Lisa a quarter to Riley. How could she not be buried there? Only Elvis knows how Elvis feels about that and that we will never know. All I know is that when I pass on after I meet God and Jesus, I'm getting front row seats to an Elvis concert in heaven so scootch over............

Parker never had a passport and his fear of being brought to justice is why he never left America and Elvis never toured outside the USA. Talking about jealousy is the poorest and childish thing a person can say. Elvis didn't want to marry her (it's a fact...Priscilla herself admitted there were pressures for the marriage) so try to walk in Elvis shoes and think how it was for him to feel entrapped. What did she expect from a marriage with those assumptions? In fact, that marriage miserably failed very quickly from both sides.

@@WhytheBookWins Elvis had his big ego, no doubt, but it's obvious that everyone around him had to adapt and follow his rythyms...he wasn't a common person. But everyone benefited from that life, richness and fame. It was not Elvis' fault...they made a choice and Priscilla did the same. Elvis never forced anyone to be part of his world.

Shaeleon.... Good grief . If she was so abused why when they divorced she wasn't to use the Presley & when Elvis died she did. Without Elvis she would be Nothing !

@@JoAnnKlingaman-iu4lm well said. All these people above here with their negative comments about Elvis are dumb young people who don’t have any clue who Elvis Presley was and did and they believe everything the FAKE mrs, Presley says. Do some RESEARCH. She was NO SAINT.
