Pripyat - DIY Geiger Counter

Ғылым және технология

Matt Eargle shares his love for cold war technology by building a homebrew Geiger counter using an old Soviet surplus Geiger tube he happened to have lying around. Embracing a cold war mentality, once completed, his Geiger counter will resemble the CDV 700 series models that were in production from 1954 until 1974, and allow him to conquer his fears with a radiation detector. Matt Eargle is a cold war nut who loves historical technologies. He just happens to have some old Soviet surplus Geiger tube sitting around. He’ll use it to build his own take on a Geiger counter. It will be something like an updated CDV 700 series. The original CDV-700 Series models were in production from 1954 until 1974. Later XXX series models were produced well into the 1980s. In order to build a homebrew version of a Geiger counter, he’ll need a couple of components in addition to his Geiger tube. A Geiger tube has a sealed vial inside a sealed glass tube containing an inert gas. You take that and apply a really high potential, the one he’s using is about 400 volts. When your particle comes in and strikes the nucleus of the gas inside, it temporarily ionizes that gas, just enough to allow some of that voltage through that it can be measured.
He’ll need a high voltage source to feed his tube. The cathode of the tube will run into an Arduino. Running the high voltage source through batteries will require a transformer. The transformer will require an AC current. The easiest way to create an AC current would be to create a little oscillator with 555 timers and run that into an inductor. The 555 timer will set up in astable mode to produce an alternating signal at 60 Hz that will get amplified by a MOSFET before running into the transformer. The current from the transformer will go into a diode laddering system which will drive the GM tube. The signal from the Geiger tube will run into an NPN transistor. The output pulse of the tube is around 200V, so it needs to have some level of conditioning before it can be counted by the Arduino. Once the output is run into ground they’ll have a digital signal that they can feed back into the Arduino.
He tests the circuit in a breadboard to make sure it works. The output of the Geiger tube is hooked into an oscilloscope. Matt uses an old aircraft instrument, an ADF with a glow in-the-dark radium dial to test to ensure that a signal is outputted to the scope. Now that we know the signal is working, we can condition that signal to create a digital pulse that we can measure and count with the Arduino. The tube output runs through a voltage divider so that it doesn’t fry the transistor. All that’s left is to 3D print some parts and do some coding using the Arduino IDE.

    We never enable monetisation on the videos btw, we just keep getting flagged for copyright for the music we use (even though we pay for it already, sigh) if you want to see less intrusive adverts on the videos introduced by youtube because of this then we're open to suggestions for music or audio suppliers or otherwise that don't get flagged.

    TotalMK the problem about that is that music dosn't stay royality free most of the time, x company buys it and copywriter it. But x libiary never gets updated. This is also probably their issue is, it use to be legally obtainable as royality free and someone bought the rights to it and it wasn't removed/ still in useage and hence the situation as it is present

    This dude is super sharp and I like him! A positive criticism I would like to add is the fact that he says 'uh' frequently. When we use a filler word such as “um or uh” we are thinking verbally. In other words, we are verbalizing our thought process. Armed with this information, it is easy to realize that the best way to avoid using filler words is to pause. If you are not speaking, you can't say “um or uh”! This video was entertaining and has an informal vibe to it.

    Great job! The one thing I wish the new show had was interactivity in the video. I loved watching Ben, but it was also great to see the team, and have him play off the team. The new format I'm sure makes that impossible for the show's main hosts, but maybe they could each have an assistant of sorts?

    Excellent video! That's an awesome build! Simple, yet made very well! You should build more! You're good at it! People would buy those! I can't wait to build my Arduino G-M counter kit when it arrives! I have the case ready for it. I'm using the huge SBT-10A G-M tube for mine. It has a mica window, so it's capable of detecting alpha too, and lower-energy beta and gamma/X-radiation. The tube has 10 anodes! Radioactivity is an awesome hobby and area of science. I absolutely love it! I have A LOT of sources, and I love to build and repair Geiger counters! I wish so many people didn't have such an irrational fear of low-level sources or even just "radiation" itself. Ionizing radiation is EVERYWHERE. Old aircraft instruments sometimes have a higher activity, having more concentrated Radium. That ADF is an old non-directional radio beacon (NDB), probably from a WWII fighter. I have a lot of Radium sources. They're all sealed up, so no dust and little Radon escapes. Anyway, well done! Well done indeed! Thanks a lot!

    Although I did enjoy the build of the instrument. I'm in my middle 60's born in 1951 and as a 6,7 and 8 year old we did those drills. Most of you never lived through that. Don't bet a one of you knows about the "Cuban Missile Crisis" we were literarily minutes or seconds from armageddon and it wasn't a drill. It was reality. That cute little song about duck and cover is actually haunting. I suggest you go back read a little history and don't make light of it....it wasn't very funny or cleaver then. I like your channel, actually I like it a lot and will continue to watch. But have a bit of respect for the past it can always become the future....hmmm...North Korea....for an instance

    Research into the effects of ultra-high-frequency radiation is still ongoing (900mhz , 2.4ghz, etc). From journals it isn't entirely conclusive or causative yet, though some of the articles are still being peer reviewed. So the jury's still out on that.

    There's a huge difference between ionising and non-ionising radiation. Non-ionising radiation (microwave ovens, wifi, cell phones etc) doesn't cause cancer because it doesn't have enough energy to ionise particles. Ionising radiation (gamma rays, UV etc) _can_ cause cancer.

  • @AirborneSurfer

    @AirborneSurfer

    Thanks, Azy! People tend to confuse high-frequency radiation with high-energy radiation. And even most of the ionizing radiation we experience in day-to-day life is relatively harmless--unless, like I said, you go around naked breathing radon gas and eating uranium ore all the time. Fun fact: there's actually trace amounts of (naturally occurring) uranium in my municipal tap water. It helps give Los Angeles that nighttime glow....🎆

    Oh please. You do realise that light is "radiation" too, right? Got a lightbulb in your house.= being bathed in radiation. Every lifeform on the planet is bathed in massive amounts of 'radiation' every day. A wifi access point is not a lump of plutonium.

  • @ColdPie

    @ColdPie

    6 жыл бұрын

    The jury is in, actually. Non-ionizing radiation, like that from cell phones, wifi access points, etc, does not cause harm to humans. There is no known mechanism by which it could cause harm, so the theory is implausible to begin with. And sure enough, when properly blinded and controlled studies are performed, no difference is shown between people exposed to varying amounts of non-ionizing radiation, as you would expect. You can read more about the actual science that studied this theory here sciencebasedmedicine.org/nonsense-about-the-health-effects-of-electromagnetic-radiation/
