I find it hilarious how Dumbledore doesn't explain what any of that meant. It's like "Priori Incantatem. I hope you know what that means, audience, because that's all the explanation you get!"

For you and others who read the comments this is an explanation of priori incantatem. It can only occur when two wands of the same core duel. It shows prior incantations and in this case showed all of the deaths that Voldemorts wands performed.

@@CommanderCodey Thanks, I knew what it meant because I've read the books. I was making fun of the film for not explaining any of that. The film just assumes that the audience has already read the books, and if anyone hadn't read them they would be pretty confused here.

They explain it right after they tell you what Marauders and Half-Blood Prince means

Priori Incantatem roughly translates from Latin to English to "prior incantation' in other words, Harry and Voldemort locking together and forcing the twin cores to do battle forced Voldemort's wand to regurgitate it's prior killings in reverse order. Later on, once Voldemort gives up his phoenix wand for the Elder Wand, there is no more Priori because the Elder Wand doesn't share the same core as Harry's.

People assume that because Harry said that their wands connected they think that when two wands both shoot streams of "magic" that that's priori incantatem but priori incantatem is what happened with the first clip of Harry and Voldemort made that dome. All wands can "connect" the way that Voldemorts and dumbledors did but only wands with twin cores can produce the dome shape, that is priori incantatem

No, wands don't connect, this only happens in the movies, spells are almost always visible as flashes of light and not beams of electricity in the books, Voldemort's and Harry's wands connect because of the twin cores, also in the books, the connection was a string of golden light with beads which when Harry pushed towards Voldemort's end caused images of the people Voldemort had killed in reverse order to appear, this was Priori incantatem, the reverse spell effect. Also in the books, both harry and Voldemort are lifted of the ground and the dome was a protective bubble around them. The screams you could hear were Phoenix screams ,probably of Fawkes since both wands contained Fawkes's tail feathers.

If their wands is not connected or twins, the spell will just collide as shown when Dumbledore fights Lord Voldemort. But if it is twin just like Harry's and Lord Voldemort's wand core, the reverse spell effect (Priori Incantatem) occurs.

I think there are two other characters who's wand cores are shared, Fleur Delacour and her sister, Gabrielle, Fleur's wand core is the hair of a Veela, which came from her grandmother it's said that it's possible that Fleur's grandmother also donated a hair to Gabrielle's wand, so therefore, if they were to become Locked in combat, their wands would trigger Priori incantatem

I think other media like the films and games adopted the "wands connect during intense duels" as a rule of cool. The Priori Incantatem is just a side effect of Harry and Voldemort's wands sharing cores and being locked into such a moment with Harry managing to get the upper hand, hence the addition of the magic sphere surrounding them both.

@@JMB_Knight Also as much as how cool this scene is it’s actually heartbreaking because Harry sees not only his parents but also his friend and fellow champion Cedric and Frank.

"let go...sweetheart you're ready..." when harry's parents were killed, he was only one year old, and i don't think he'd have any conscious memories of his parents voices, because someone's voice is the first thing people forget about them. so in some sense, harry was hearing his parent's voice for the first time, because he was finally at the age where he'd be able to remember. depressing, really.

The duel between Dumbledore and Voldemort didn't involve Priori Incantatem, it was just the movie makers being lazzy and putting a similar effect in there because it looked cool. No, the reason why Harry and Voldemort’s wands connected in such a unique way which triggered Priori Incantatem is because they shared the same cores, they brothers so to speak.

The dome effect happened due to Voldemort and Harry's wands being connected and due to this the reverse spell priori incantatem was triggered with its golden threats. Either way it really dosen’t matter regarding to the movies, being that the connection played out different as depictied in the books, there was no real dome effect with its golden threats and them floating in the air and whatever.

Honestly, the film directors became obsessed with this visual going forward and robbed us of the true potential of a well crafted magical duel.

In the book voldemort's and Dumbledore's wands did never connect by jets of green and red light they just did other stuff, though the kind of giant water bubble in which voldemort was inside did happen. That is not priori incantatem

Watching these duels even without priori incantatem such as Voldemort and dumbledores fight or the death eater and Arthur Weasley fight is still awesome

This battle, YES I’M CALLING IT A BATTLE, was sooo good.

I dislike how the movies made the beam clash from Prior Incantatem a normal thing that can occur. It breaks a lot in the setting (spells that are supposed to be bolts that for some reason become beams) and the Unstoppable Avada Kedavra that suddenly can be stopped by turning it into a beam struggle. From the books perspective, Avada Kedavra is the kind of spell that will slice and blast through any spell it meets in its path, making it a terrifying unstoppable force. (Unless you are behind a thick enough physical barrier) The beam clash really should have just been this unique occurrence only happening Between Harry and Voldemort, and only while wielding the linked staves. Many people might not want to admit it, or even see it. But it really takes away a lot of the dread from the Killing Curse. (and the beam clashing is just not as fun to look at honestly, I rather having them running around and blasting multiple spells, rather then standing around pointing their stick very intently)

The second one isn't Priori Incantatem. Priori Incantatem is when 2 wands that share the same core connect causing in a reversal effect but because you can't reverse death it brings a ghost or an echo of who that person who died was.

+risingfire8352 Ahhhhh. You have hinted at one of the main differences between the films and the novels that I too find irritating! As you might know in the novels, Priori Incantatem, or the reverse spell effect, only occurs if two wands with cores from the same animal, or twin cores, are forced to combat each other. In the films, it is left unexplained, which allowed them to use it for dramatic effect when Dumbledore duels Voldemort at the ministry, and multiple times during the Battle of Hogwarts, including Harry and Voldemort's final duel.

+Nathan Donnelly I know I'm late, but no. What happened between Voldemort and Dumbledore was simply their spells colliding. Priori incantatem is when the two wands are brother wands, and their previous spells are revealed. Voldemort used Avada Kedavra a lot, so ghosts of people he killed were revealed. David Yates is stupid af, but he is smart enough to ensure that Priori Incantatem is not what occurs when Dumbledore fights Voldemort.

And to make it more complicated the last film where Harry and voldy duel for the final time thier wands only connected because Harry was the true owner of the elder wand and voldys killing curse refused to kill its owner resulting in voldy only dying when nagini the final horcrux was destroyed . I'm sure some of u know this but here it is anyway

2nd one not priori incantatem: otherwise Voldemort wouldn't be able to do what he does at 1:46, shooting separate sparks flying from his wands. His wand wasn't locked in with Dumbledore's.

I know book Fans complain about how much this effect was used in the Movies but I can’t bring myself to hate it, it’s too cool to have only Harry and Voldemort do it (and I can’t even remember if it does happen again after the Fourth Book).

There was no Priori Incantatem between Dumbledore's a and Voldemort's wands, they were just stuck in the combat and their spells were colliding

Harry’s wand was winning !!!! That’s why the ghost came out of nowhere it forced Voldemort’s wand to reveal its last spells cast

I didn’t realize how fucking sad the Harry Potter movies could be until I saw Cedric’s death

Harry and Voldemort in the Graveyard would lead to Priori incatatem since they share the same core in their wands. This doesnt apply when Voldemort dueled with Dumbledore in the Atrium since Dumbledore had the Elder wand. (It could only happen here if Dumbledore had a wand with the same core as in Voldemort's wand or Voldemort had a 2nd Elder wand which by my knowledge doesnt exist)

I don't know why David Yates kept putting Priori Incantatem in all the Harry/Voldemort fights (and even in Voldemort vs Dumbledore, which makes NO SENSE) after "Goblet of Fire". That phenomenon is supposed to happen because the two wands shared the core element and thus were "twinned". But after Voldemort takes Lucius' wand, this shouldn't happen

it only happened twice. In Book 4 and when Voldermort used Lucius'wand. With that second duel , Harry's wand regurgitated the last of the priori's magic.

@@DoratTheKiller not at all. Dumbledore vs Voldermort only had beam fight. Priori is the dome thing. And the Harry vs Voldy in Hallows 2 was the Elder Wand not obeying Voldy , as he was not his master.

@@phantasosxgames8488 Maybe, but the light effect used in both cases 100% looked like Priori Incantatem, the only thin missing was the cage of light (which appeared ONLY in Goblet of Fire, fortunately). You can say it's laziness on the part of the special effects department, but the end result is that it looks recycled

DoratTheKiller nonono. Dumbledore and Voldemort was just a regular spell clash. When you cast a x style spell at the same time, that happens. X= it is like Voldemort killing Harry in forest.

I wonder, why Lord Voldemort never been able to kill Harry Potter. I mean apart from Lill'y Potter's sacrificial protection and Priori incantation (at the Graveyard) Voldemort tried killing Harry with Luscious Malfoy's wand, but won't be able to do so. This actually brings two theory 1. Harry was Lucky so many times. 2. Harry Potter is a great wizard, probably the greatest of all time (intuitively). Better than Albus Dumbledore, Gellert Grindelwald or Even Tom Marvolo Riddle aka Voldemort. It was just that being born and bought up among muggles and also the inate nature of love and harmony didn't let him go towards power striving. I believe had Harry paid the same kind of attention what Voldemort, Dumbledore or even Hermione Granger did towards study (or say towards greatness), he would have easily surpassed all of them. However the only thing he ever paid attention was towards 'Quidditch' and he became G.O.A.T in that. It's a shame he didn't played for England. Had he did so, he would have not only shattered many records, but also made so many which would be impossible to break.

An effect like this is so powerful. But there’s only a few rules in my opinion 1. No talking 2. No just standing there still as a statue 3. It’s a powerful battle so you need to pigging make noise like “AAH! RRRRR! DUH! HRRRRRR!” 4. Always start with “EXPELLIARMUS!/AVADA KEDVARA!” 5. As a last resort, do what Harry did in the final battle in the D.H.P2 video game, slingshot the spell towards the opponent

it was probably avada kedavra. the color of this curse is inconsistent throughout the series. when snape used it, it was almost blue, when wormtail used it, it was bright green

In the book is different, they were connected not by jets of green and red light but by a gold thread of light that had large beads sliding up and down the thread and if a beam connected to a wand, the last spells performed by that wand would emerge from it, from most recent to less recent spells( in voldemort's case its last victims), its a kind of reverse echo, that is called the reverse spell effect. Priori Incantatem happens when a wand meets its brother and when it does, it would not work properly against each other

TexasLegend3 Well, I would imagine when the loser is struck with the winner's spell, whatever it is, they go under the effect of the spell, be it a disarming charm, a stunning spell or a killing curse, the loser would be disarmed, stunned or killed, or if the winner used something like a fire spell or a full body bind curse, they would be burned or be rendered immobile

TheMedHoldTrainee you cannot win. Dumbledore and Voldemort are not priori incantatem. It’s just a spell clash. If Avada kedavra wins the opponent dies. If expelliarmus wins the opponent gets disarmd

no neccessarily sad, it's just touchy. I mean obviously when cedric told harry to bring his body back was sad but...touchy

SkimCraftia well yes and no. It was not a real or fake priori incantatem. It was just a spell clash. When you try to create a spell like Voldemort killing Harry in Forrest, and the opponent counters, this happens.

I still find it funny Harry tried Expelliarmus spell against the Dark Lord. Of all the spell he should know by the fourth year, he went with that one. despite hopefully knowing Voldy would use the Killing Curse (which he did) of all things. Just makes me shake my head. if anything, get out of dodge first and try pertificus totalium. That's what I would do.

In the book Harry learned plenty of spells in the lead up to the 3rd task. Impediment Curse, a spell to slow down and obstruct attackers; the Reductor Curse, which would enable him to blast solid objects out of his way, etc. Use them!
