Printing Envelopes on Konica Minolta Digital Press, Update on new Paper Cutter

Testing out the ability of the toner based digital press to print envelopes. I like offset and inkjet, but all I have is toner. I'd be interested to see how other digital presses like the Xerox, Canon and Ricoh do with envelopes. I was impressed, the c3070 only jammed once and it was my fault, I loaded too many envelopes in the feeder. The C3070 was printing at about 3600 envelopes and hour and the C1060 will do 1800 an hour.
I am very impressed with the efficiency of a programmable paper cutter. Will take a bit of practice, and I keep reaching for buttons at the wrong place, but I will learn. Thanks for watching!

I started following your channel because I am into commercial printing as well. You have become one the youtubers I follow not so much for the content of the video but for the person in front of the camera. You are such a chill and positive guy that if you ever decided to turn this channel into a cooking show, I would still be watching, and I never cook! I am really starting to think this channel is undersubscribed, may the youtube algorithm be ever in your favor!

I love your channel!!!!!! Watch every episode religiously! I’m also impressed at your video editing and choice of music, and great b-roll footage. You’re a master! I too can’t believe how much work you crank out by yourself. I did prepress/film for over 20 years for lots of printers around, and believe it or not I still run film for a few shops! Anyway, I got into digital printing about 15 years ago and never looked back. I now have 3 color Konica’s and 1 bw Konica. My old 6500 is still kicking great in my garage, where I run it when I get home sometimes! So just FYI, you can negotiate the service contract to charge only every other click when the ENV fuser is on. I use it every day! I ran 5000 envelopes just yesterday on my 2070. Still a slow process. At Tampa Bay Press we had 3 jets i would do film for, and the speed was amazing. Keep up the great work! I hope to be commenting more... thank you for all of the help you have given to thousands of DIYers like us. Konica deserves every click they can get, but to run a more profitable shop, you have to have off contract machines (and keep at least 1 on), that’s what I have. -Gerald

I used to use an Epson ET-2550 kzread.infoUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 , an early model of the ink tank style. It worked well, but had one nuisance that drove me up the wall; if you didn't put it in high quality print mode you'd get a streak across the page. I'm happy to say I have yet to see this with this printer. The print quality has been fantastic so far, the set up was super easy. All in all I'm very happy with this printer.

That auto setup is such a game changer. I remember going from a manual back gauge to a auto. Saves so much time, but also so much stress off of your back and shoulders. Instead of picking up a stack 7 or 8 times, you only have to do it once. So much better for ergonomics.

I love watching your channel. It reminds me of a much earlier time in my life when I was a software developer for the Fiery RIP. We were constantly in touch with guys like yourself, fixing bugs, firguring out why different desktop publishing applications behaved differently, and getting a sense of how important deadlines are. I remember programs like Quark Express, PageMaker and all the Adobe products. Microsoft Word was nearly the death of me. I'm still a software developer (not for Fiery). I was a lot younger back then and I recall that period of my life as a really fun time, mainly because we were face to face with guys very much like youself. Can still smell the toner.

@@rafaelvalles9963 Of course, this was 20 years ago. Trouble was: most of us had studied only mathematics and/or computer science. That's great - except we knew nothing about printing. But, man, did we learn! The company sent us out to places like Dan's for weeks to learn to look at the finished product, as opposed to just how the software works. I literally printed jobs for real clients. I struggled to understand colour, saturation and the limitations of digital printing. I'd never even heard of Pantone colours - but I soon discovered we couldn't reproduce all of them. It's mathematically impossible. I really enjoyed my time there, and I loved working with real printers who taught me so much. I'm sure the Fiery is pretty good these days. There was another company in the mix: Colorbus - not sure what happened to them. Nonetheless, I also think the desktop publishing software also got better. Half the issues we had was the Quark Express/PageMaker/Illustrator sending incorrect instructions to the Fiery interpreter. It was a great time in my life.

Good Golly, do you bring back memories? I retired in 2008 from the print industry after 38 yrs in the bindery. I remember everything was by hand mostly and then everything went digital. What I mean by hand is that all adjustments were done either with a chunk of tape or the turn of a knob and the deftness of the eye ball. As you've shown it can all be corrected with the touch of a button. I used to operate stitchers, folders and large cutters that could handle 9' x 5' sheets of any stock the presses could print on. Oh, the memories. I'll definitely going to follow.

@Just A Printer: When on guillotine, to remember programmes I’ve always tried to do long edge first and then turn the stack 90 degrees for every cut. I could go back to old jobs months later and still remember the orientation. It’s relatively easy when you have 2-4-6-8 up jobs at standard sizes. Different story when it’s a pre-collated ticket strip set, 30 kinds with slip sheets at 300.5x24.5mm. We do a lot of work for cosmetic industry and their art workers place text and codes so tight to the cut line, sometimes every 0.25mm or 1/100 inch matters, that is before you factor print stretching and contraction or printing on synthetic papers/polyester. I love your channel man- it reminds me so much of myself back to basics!

Hey there....at our shop, we had a run of 50,000 envelopes. By chance, I called an envelope printer in a large town 100 miles away. Their price to print 1/1 red ink on their #10/24 was less than our really good price just for the envelopes. They wanted 3 days to print/deliver. They used a jet perfector. Way cool options for us on envelopes, w/o having to have that much inventory on hand taking up room. Cool on how you ran envs. to bleed, never saw that since I started in 1981. PS: I''m glad you were not my competition!

We used to run a KM C1070 and do a fair run of envelopes, with a separate fuser. We had no wrinkling issues when using a more premium weight (100gsm vs 80gsm). With direct mail (fully customized addrrssing) the tiny imperfections were fine though on the regular stocks. To be honest am glad though we are hands off nowadays (machine now updated and offsite).

Hey Boss. You could do with a knock up/jogger block... can make yourself. With the air it can sneakily move some sheets out. Worth knocking in every time after back gauge pushes out. Also with your double cuts on gutters I always have the offcut side to the outside. You will cheat more life out of your blade as the fluffies are on outer side. Sharpest finish on the inside of blade. Hope that makes sense. Enjoy your channel.

For envelopes we run an M1 Colour printer with conveyor delivery (uses Memjet technology). Very simple low cost machine that would fit well into your 'I feel dirty only running one press' style. We set it running in the morning and load it up as we're passing whilst doing other jobs. It takes around 250 envelopes per stack. Easily get 10,000 done in a day without really noticing. Click rate is minuscule compared with the presses you have. Will do colour edge to edge, print C4, C5 and DL. Often we'll print indicia and address at the same time.

I'm a little late to watching this one.... An alternative to finding a stream feeder is using the other vacuum feed drawers in combination. There is a DIP switch that enables drawers 3 and 4 to also feed envelopes. If you give them all the same profile, the machine will automatically switch between drawers, allowing you to keep refilling while it's running. The service manual will give a warning that the feeding out of those drawers is not guaranteed to work as well as drawer 5 since they are not a straight path, but I know shops that have had success with it. You can also order the post screws and envelope attachments for the other drawers. Side note, those envelope attachments also work great if you ever need to run divider tabs. The small rubber feet on the bottom hold the outer tabs in place since the back guide in the drawer doesn't. Lastly, if you do decide to try moving the bypass over, keep in mind that you will need an FA-502 kit which is installed into the PF-707m to allow the paper to pass between drawers 4 and 5.

I'd put a bin for the cut-offs right in front of the cutter so you can just slide them off right there rather than having to lift them over the stack of uncut sheets, this will make it even faster and will prevent some strain on your back in the long run, especially since you seem to be quite tall and have to crouch to it :-)

@@justaprinter I'd say get a bin just tall enough so you can slide it partially under the cutter table to get it easily out of the way if you need to, big just enough so it's not too heavy to carry when completely full. If it's too low there's more chance you'll miss. Making a routine out of this will improve your speed quite a bit without exerting much more effort .-)

A quick way to make envelope-printing more profitable is by printing names and addresses on them in the same run. One of the advantages of an digital printer is, that it does care how many different files there is on a job. So let the customer pay a little bit extra per envelope - and print the name, address and zip code on it. The customer just deliver a csv-file with the data, and then you can easily do a data-merge through InDesign f.ex. 🙂
