Before we start the 2-step heat transfer process, here is a list of the materials and equipment used in this episode:
Luminaris 200 white toner transfer printer
Ricoma auto-open 15x15 flat heat press
White t-shirt
Black t-shirt
Transparent transfer sheet
Adhesive sheet
Reusable Teflon paper
The first step in heat transfer printing is choosing a high-quality image and preparing it for production using the LuminRIP printing software that is included with the Luminaris 200 whiter toner transfer printer.
To prepare your image, use the color-adjust feature to make the design stand out more. You can do this by increasing the black, moving the max ink bar all the way to the right, setting the saturation to 35 and making sure the ink removal box is unchecked.
Next, fix the transparency by right-clicking on the image and moving the transparency bar to the left.
Finally, change the size of the design to best fit the item it will be transferred onto.
Once your design has been adjusted for heat transfer printing, select “Tray 1” as the input tray and press print.
To print the design using the Luminaris 200 white toner transfer printer, insert the transparent transfer sheet into the tray with the shiny side facing down and the matte side facing up.
Next, combine the transfer sheet with the adhesive sheet using a heat press. Make sure the adhesive side faces the design and the paper side is facing up. Set the heat press to 310 degrees Fahrenheit for 120 seconds.
Once the press is at the right temperature, place the sheets onto the platen with the transfer sheet facing down and the adhesive sheet on top.
Finally, cover the two sheets with Teflon paper and close the heat press.
When the timer elapses, remove the sheets from the platen. While they are still warm, peel off the adhesive sheet in one smooth, consistent motion.
Next, place your shirt on the heat press and press it for about 5 seconds to get any wrinkles out before the transfer. After the shirt is pressed, place the transfer sheet on it with the shiny side facing up. Make sure the heat transfer sheet is about four fingers under the collar of the t-shirt and center the design as much as possible.
Once you are happy with the placement, put a Teflon sheet over the design and press it for 30 seconds at 310 degrees. Remove the shirt from under the heat press when it’s done and wait for it to cool. Once the shirt is cool, remove the heat transfer sheet starting from a corner and peel it away slowly.
After you have completed the 2-step heat transfer, the final step is to seal the design. To do so, place the shirt back under the heat press, cover it with a piece of Teflon paper and close the heat press for 10 seconds. When the time is up, remove the Teflon paper slowly to make sure you do not damage the design.
Now that you know how 2-step heat transfer printing works, here are some tips to keep in mind before you do it yourself:
First, make sure you use a high-resolution image so that it is easier to edit and prepare for heat transfer printing.
Second, always heat press your garment for at least 5 seconds before transferring your design to eliminate any moisture or wrinkles.
Lastly, remember to use a Teflon sheet so that the heat from the heat press is evenly distributed and the transfer comes out clean.

To utilize the Legal size, please follow these steps: 1. Extend the tray to its largest size by pushing the green tab. 2. Remove the rear cover for the tray.

The Luminaris 200 uses the A4 printing size, which is big enough to create prints that cover a large area on the front of a t-shirt. However, with the LuminRIP (Mac and PC Compatible) software that is included in your bundle, you can go even bigger as it automatically cuts the design in a way that can be seamlessly pieced together. So if your customer needs a custom item like a long banner, the Luminaris 200 can print designs that are up to 52 inches in length.
