Principle and Working of Cyclotron

Cyclotron- Principle, Construction & Working
Cyclotron
Cyclotron is a device used to accelerate charged particles to high energies. It was devised by Lawrence
Principle
Cyclotron works on the principle that a charged particle moving normal to a magnetic field experiences magnetic lorentz force due to which the particle moves in a circular path.
Working:
When a positive ion of charge q and mass m is emitted from the source, it is accelerated towards the Dee having a negative potential at that instant of time. Due to the normal magnetic field, the ion experiences magnetic lorentz force and moves in a circular path. By the time the ion arrives at the gap between the Dees, the polarity of the Dees gets reversed. Hence the particle is once again accelerated and moves into the other Dee with a greater velocity along a circle of greater radius. Thus the particle moves in a spiral path of increasing radius . The particle with high energy is now allowed to hit the target T.

  • @azzyboii830

    @azzyboii830

    5 жыл бұрын

    the escape velocity to sun from earths orbit is 42.127 km/s.... the only limitation this cyclotron faces is that if velocity crosses speed of light then the frequency becomes zero more like placing a pendulum in the middle of the earth it wont oscillate this can be followed up by einstein special theory of relativity ... and yep you cant oscillate neutral species and only charged species can be accelerated and also using an electron is not preffered cos its mass is not effecient to initiate an acceleration and get a massive velocity out of the cyclotron..... so basically what am saying yes it can reach escape velocity but what you tend to do with it is not practical its like launching nuclear waste to earth atmosphee re lots of variables and lots of stuff can go wrong and the high enrgy radiowaste can even bombard the atoms in our atmosphere on its journey to the space.....dude cmon think about it...seriously

    Maybe because of its extremely less mass, it may not be useful in nuclear fission. I am not sure though.

    @@anmolagrawal5358 is right. The main use of this machine when it was first in invinted before the Manhattan project. The main purpose of it was to accelerate a larger particle so that it would have enough energy to break up a radioactive element setting a chain reaction. The electron would even to small to effect the large heavy radioactive metal

    @@codyburkholder7397 Um you partly wrong sir. You are right about electrons not being used due to EXTREMELY SCARCE MASS but sir the penetration power of an electron is FAR FAR greater than a PROTON or a NEUTRON. The actual reason is that the electron would be accelerated to such high velocities that it would become out of phase with the oscillating field & it is EXTREMELY TOUGH to perceive its curvature at such high velocities so the desired effect of cyclotron wouldn't be achieved. :D

    Cyclotron is kind of a particle collider. It collides charged particles with other small particles. This has a huge apply in nuclear and atomic physics experiments. Many sub atomic particles were discovered using particle colliders (the latest one being in 2013, which is called Higgs boson, or 'the god particle'. It was discovered using 'large hadron collider' at CERN). As far as 25 people have won noble prize just by discovering new particles using cyclotron...
