Just an educated guess. With a name as blatantly "MWAHAHA I'M EVIL AND STUFF" as Shadow... then I know he's going to be a martyr. Much like another sentient cartoon mammal with a black and red color scheme named Shadow that I know. I wouldn't be surprised if "Never Turn Back" played in his final moments when he fights the almost inevitable Nightmare Astelle.

I think Shadow will get a mind of its own, and turn against Astelle, making her realize what a monster she created, and how she essentially became one herself. I also think that towards the end, after telling Trixie, Twilight and her friends how to reverse the spell, she'll sacrifice herself to stop Shadow, and save all of Equestria.

+EaglesMan710 Shadow clearly has a mind of his own. As we know, Luna and Shadow were once close friends at the very least, perhaps even lovers, though the exact details are currently shady at best. To play devil's advocate, one may argue Astelle had stoked the passions in Shadow to gain Luna's trust in investment her eventual coup against Celestia, but he turned away from Luna for reasons still unknown. He clearly disliked having to kidnap Luna, so I doubt that he's very loyal to Astelle given her tight leash on him. I don't think he plots to overthrow her and Celestia, either. As of this comment, I imagine he's still weighing his judgement with his heart's conflict- wondering whether turning against Astelle in favour of Luna's forgiveness would be wise seeing as she currently holds all the cards, including Luna. I think that due to Luna's imprisonment along with Celestia, he knows that he could end up being responsible for the death of his former friend's sister- and that is not going to win him back Luna's affections. So he's basically caught between a rock and a hard place on top of a very thin ice sheet. I imagine that the inevitable Nightmare Astelle will depart to dispose of Trixie and the Mane Six herself, leaving Shadow alone to guard Luna and Celestia. Seeing his fleeting and only opportunity, he takes desperate gamble to stop the power-mad Astelle and regain Luna's trust- he'll return her and Celestia's magic, and bust them out. Perhaps a few encounters with Trixie and the Mane Six in between busting out Luna and Celestia, but I'm certain that Shadow will eventually betray and fall before Astelle in battle- whether he's outright defeated, or whether he attempts to kill himself but fails to take her down with him.
