Princess Leonor has experienced a historic moment when her father, King Felipe VI, has given her the office of second lieutenant at the General Military Academy of Zaragoza
In a significant ceremony at the General Military Academy of Zaragoza, King Felipe VI presented the officer’s commission to Princess Leonor following her year of training. Queen Letizia and Infanta Sofía were also in attendance, along with the newly appointed officers of the Spanish Army and the Civil Guard.
During the ceremony, King Felipe bestowed upon Princess Leonor the title of Cadet Officer of the Spanish Army and awarded her the Grand Cross of Military Merit with a white distinction. The appointment as an officer was approved by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday.
This event marks Princess Leonor’s farewell to Zaragoza after her initial year of military education. Her training will continue at the Naval Academy in Marín (Pontevedra) starting at the end of next month.
Notably, King Felipe himself received the Grand Cross of Military Merit in July 1986 upon completing his training at the Zaragoza Academy.
Among the dignitaries attending the ceremony are Minister of Defense Margarita Robles and Aragon’s President Jorge Azcón. Additionally, the lieutenants who have completed the five-year course at the General Military Academy-both from the Spanish Army and the Civil Guard-will receive their official decrees.
The ceremony takes place in the courtyard of the General Military Academy of Zaragoza and concludes with a parade along the main avenue, followed by the traditional tossing of berets into the air.
