Princess Anne Survives Dramatic Kidnapping Attempt - News at Ten Studio Special (1974)
On 20 March 1974, Princess Anne, Princess Royal and her husband, Captain Mark Phillips, survived a violent kidnapping attempt while travelling down the Mall. The royal couple were returning to Buckingham Palace after a charity event when Ian Ball pulled his Ford Escort out in front of the Princess IV car and began shooting at the royal motorcade. After wounding Anne's personal police officer, Inspector James Beaton, and her chauffeur, Alex Callender, Ian Ball approached the car and shouted at the Princess Royal to get out of the car. The Princess' response: "Not bloody likely!" In total, four people were shot before Ball was finally disarmed.
This video is an excerpt of the News at Ten bulletin broadcast the night of the attack. At the time it was thought to have been an attempted assassination rather than a kidnapping. ITN's veteran reporter and presenter Reginald Bosanquet led the programme, while Norman Rees interviewed eyewitness Miss Sammy Scott.

Agreed.
seeing the witness smoking in the studio is quite amusing from a modern perspective
There was no escorting police vehicle for the royal Limousine. Just the chauffeur and the detective who earned the George cross for gallant bravery. He took several rounds for the princess!
I’m amazed they didn’t include this on “The Crown”.

A missed opportunity.
Proper News At Ten with the original dramatic theme tune, authoritative sound and seriousness, Just how it SHOULD BE.
If Princess Anne had been in her Reliant Scimitar, no-one would have caught her!
Royal protection has never been the best. Queen driving herself around in an unarmoured Range Rover was always a worry. Its a tough balance to strike between giving the Royals a life and keeping them safe.
Shocking story! What's really crazy is this lady is smoking on tv!!! OMG, times have changed since 1974!

Can you see she is very nervous in the interview; her smoking had to be allowed, to calm her nervousness because she is a vitally vital first hand eyes witness that was only saved by God's grace from being Gun 🔫down in the kidnapping attempt. Think of that -before professionalism and ethics in journalism!

Thanks Simon I know you truly care. But omg...Watching this made me giggle when the witness was SMOKING while interviewed in the studio.
What a horror. Thank you for this piece of “news“.
Unreal. I never knew it was so serious. I heard about but wow!
Remember ITN Starting like that and the bongs of big Ben
Ah. Reggie. We still miss you after all these years!
I wonder how drunk Reginald Bosanquet was here 😂
How the London accent has changed so in 50 years! But with this, the nice lady with the hanky has a proper accent; the way educated Londoners were expected to speak for decades. Remarkable!

This was not a 'normal' London accent even then - this is clearly some RP speaking deb who was driving down the Mall late-ish in the evening giving some indication of where she probably lived - basically a posho witnessing some aristos get murked innit
Her testimony in this video is contrary to another - which said Princess Anne's husband darted out of the vehicle and left her to fend for herself! Her security got her out of the car.
Is this woman still alive? I hope she was given a bravery medal or something.?This was all back when smoking was not a problem anywhere..
People was nuts back in 82 then.Even worst now 2023.
I wonder who broke the news to Anne's parents. Tough job.

No weapon fashioned against any of the Royals shall prosper. Glad they were not hurt. Pray for speedy healing of the injured bodyguard and the other stranger. Amen🙏

Princess Anne is the true People's princess. She is tough, no nonsense, no drama. Nothing like attention seeker/sympathy seeker Saint Diana
Can you do the ITV News at Nine of 21 March 2003 when the Iraq invasion occurred?
Thought the cars' was bullet proof?
1974!! Isn't it time to Not re-run this old news.
