I think I understand why the shinden pilot didn't win. He could easily have won but he was too intrigued by the sheer will of his opponent to survive, even when the odds are stacked against him. You can see how he watches the pilot in the dive. Maybe a part of him didn't want to kill his opponent as a result.

Look at the end, when they both shoot he only shot with his wing weapons but not the nose cannon. He probably didn't shoot cuz either it didn't have ammo It was jammed and if he knew it, he couldn't waste the ammo of his working wing guns.

Well that vertical dive at full throttle could have killed them both. Anyone who has ever flown il2 or other good quality ww2 simulators would know this. Back then they still hadn't discovered the solution of a phenomenon we know as compressibility. It was a new phenomenon that was unfourtunatly discovered by pilots during ww2 as higher dive speeds were being made possible by better aerodynamics and power plants then being developed. I remember when it first happened to me in a simulator during a dog fight. I went defensive and tried to drop to the deck as fast as i could. Got an overspeed warning so tried to pull up. when nothing happened that was a bit of a shock. At first it thought i had been hit but a quick check on outside view showed i was intact. Furthermore my flight control surfaces were responding just fine....it's just they weren't doing anything. Throttling back didn't seem to slow it down enough. In a simulator this is alarming. In real life this would be nothing short of pure terror. Stuck in a dive you cannot pull out of and you didn't know why. I had no aileron or elevator control response and only the tiniest bit of rudder response it was not enough to do anything. Just like the first pilot that had unfourtunatly discovered this new phenomenon i tried air brakes but even though you know if it had an override they wouldn't deploy at that speed and if they didn't well they would have blown off your tail and that would have been it. Fortunately i did have an override. So resigned to my fate of a brutal earth meld i still tried in vain to pull up when at 400ft something amazing happened i very slightly started to pitch up. I still didn't really know what was happening but wasn't going to argue this was good. As the pitch slowly increased my airspeed started to bleed off and i was able to pull up just in time to cut some fresh daisies i shit you not it was low. This is how i and the first pilots to survive this (sadly many did not) discovered this terrifying aerodynamic phenomenon. Afterwards i searched to find out what had happened and discovered the compressibility phenomenon. Basically what happens is that even if you are subsonic at extreme angle of attack at high altitude low density air will be passing supersonic over the top of the wing surface due to the shape of the wings back then it basically destroyed the compressible air over the flight control surfaces of the aircraft thus rendering you flight control surfaces ineffective. Not really a good thing when you are screaming towards the earth. But as you get into denser air at lower altitudes this effect starts to normalise and you can sometimes regain enough normalised airflow over the wing surfaces to regain control pull up and bleed off excessive airspeed. Pilots were taught this if they ever got themselves into this situation and also to be careful of their airspeed at extreme angles of attack to stop this phenomenon from happening in the first place until they discovered new aerofoil designs that better resisted this phenomenon and is one of the key things we had to discover to make supersonic flight possible. Just an interesting story for those that care about real aviation.

FYI not all aircraft were affected in the same way by compressibility in WW2. This was only discovered due to the P-38's design. However, both aircraft here wouldn't have really been affected by compressibility due to their different aerodynamic designs. I'd like to point out that despite the fact that simulators are realistic, there may be some aerodynamic features that are not put into them, and as far as I know there is basically no WW2 flight simulator that has proper compressibility put into them (although instead they use control lock-up, but that's different).

adznz11 War Thunder's P40 had that as a bigass problem way before the recent update lol

2:16 He would've crashed into the water due to gaining too much speed during his 74 second dive. He also would've broken his wings, especially increasing his throttle during the dive. 2:52 The J7W1 is not a Su-35.

Fenrir S Have you seen Paths of Hate? Its one of the coolest warplane animations that I have seen so far. Whenever I watch it I get pumped up to play War Thunder. You should go check it out.

He has a perfect deflection shot when diving in from the sun, up till he was mere yards away, doesnt take it..

Interesting to see this variant of the J7W Shinden in this movie - unlike the original, but like the "Sanka B" from The Sky Crawlers (which came out three years earlier), it has contra-rotating propellers. The real Shinden was a late-war Japanese prototype that displayed impressive performance but the war ended while it was in development. It had a handling flaw of noticeable pulling to the left due to P-factor (an effect due to angle-of-attack and propeller rotation) from it's high power-to-weight ratio, a problem contra-rotating propellers, as seen in both movies, would have solved. I would imagine this is speculation by the movie makers of what the Shinden would have become had it been further developed and improved, to create the ultimate Japanese fighter. Ultimate piston fighter anyway, soon after the move would have been to jets, and a jet version of the Shinden was envisioned but never developed. Same with the Sanka B, which had that plus larger air scoops, which would have resolved cooling issues the original had, though the ones in this movie appear to have standard air scoops.

Notes from the dogfight: 1. 0:29 - 0:34 Best BNZ position, but no offensive act. 2. 1:36 Split S? Good maneuver, but opponent has a better turn rate. 3. 2:12 Quick recovery maneuver may create 7G (or more) which may knocks out the passenger (if she didn't went through G force training) and/or even the pilot. 4. 2:38 Vertical climb decreases airspeed and energy, but somehow opponent can still climb despite being slower. 5. Finally pilot realises he's fucked and resorts using the rear gun. Please do correct me if I'm wrong. And add more if you can. Thx.

During the vertical dive, the speed and angle should've killed both planes. Because at such speed and angle, the plane would compress and be nearly impossible to pull out in a dive. Even if they pull out like that, their planes should've ripped. If you played DCS or any good simulators (I'm an F-14 main) you'll know that well enough. Also, in that last maneuver the Shinden did, that is impossible unless the plane was a Su-27 or a MiG-29 (even though that's small possibility). Even so, it's impossible to pull that maneuver.

@@ghazypangerang6118 No, he did a 180 maneuver. A Cobra is just going up 90 degrees then going back into the plane's original position. Look it up.

That steep dive would have killed both their aircraft due to overspeed & severe compression at that sort of angle.

3k hours in WT and 4K hours in DCS… this dogfight looks more like a recruits test flight than an ace dogfight….

honestly, throughout the whole scene they have plenty chance to take down that plane and the just decided to waste fuel in a fancy maneuver scene, knowing their plane is less maneuverable but has a lot more armor and guns, with weapons in the front and back, they just line him up like they were in over the sea and shot his cockpit to shit, i am pretty sure trained pilots wont miss at that range, but, you know, japan right :D

not to mention the MC plane is a mush-up of late war japanese plane with twin tail design(ki-44,j2m,a6m2)

Oh, never knew either. Just googled it, it's a tier 8 in WoWP, seems like a meh to convince me to play it due to the eternal grind I experienced in WoT; I'd rather stick to WarThunder and its realism. Besides the manouvrability-exaggeration of the shinden, they've made it even more maneuverable beyond what's physically possible in the film. In reality those elevators would break off and wing overload in the santa cruz, or at least having the crew black out. Air isn't that thick too.

@@sciencechicken7669 Yeah I can understand that, but think about what audience their were trying to sell the film to. If the target audience were aviation enthusiasts like myself, they more than likely would have put more effort into the realism of it. A better example of realism would be the anime Kotobuki. The air battles in that were more realistic minus the blimp aircraft carrier XD. I hope when I start doing animations I can satisfy that need to realism though XD

I don't really understand what the blue plane is, it seems to have the early mg of the stukas, the gull wings of the stukas, the slightly inverted gull wings of the d5 stuka but the tail is very different, like one of the early stuka models. As you can tell obvious stuka buff. If someone knows what this thing is that would be great.

The aircraft might be inspired from the Aichi B7A Grace（main body design), the Heinkel He-70 (elliptical wings), and the Messerchmitt Bf-110（tail design）

classic error. he was too close from the enemy plane and thus the configuration of hig guns didnt allow him to hit his target and that part frustrated me like bruh its even more stupid if the enemy is an ace edit: there so much plot brain moment like bruh: when he dived on them he whould have shoot and no even if you sont want to waste bullet that was stupid the way he was allowed him to unleash hell the dive helps alot. when the fighter behind them at the beginning wasnt moving SHOOT

Because the contra prop rotation maximizes the power of the prop, is more efficient then a single prop, and it balances out the torque of the spinning props, giving it overall better performance vs a single prop.

The J7W, though having impressive performance, had a significant pull to left due to P-factor with it's high power-to-weight ratio. Contra-rotating props would have solved that, it can be speculated that this is a later version, what it would have become had it been developed further. Same for the Sky Crawlers Sanka Mk B, which was probably an even later variant - it also had enlarged air scoops which would have solved the original's cooling issues, the ones seen here appear to have the same air scoops as the original.

Anyone notice that the enemy plane looked too much like a Sanka from _The Sky Crawlers_?

@@TeenWithACarrotIDK The Shinden has rear swept wings, a pusher configuration, and isn't even a dive bomber like the Stuka. I really don't see the similarity. Bf110 and P38 are more similar for that matter, or the GeeBee and the I-16 (which in my perception appear pretty similar).

World of Warplanes in a T9 nutshell be like:

Surviving that long against a J7W. jeez. How much ammo did they have? pilots back then were known to spam bullets. And with all his skill, the J7 pilot didn't take into account that HIS guns were on his wings, and at that range would most likely just fly past the fuselage of the other plane (forget what model, if real at all). However, the Blue aircraft had a SINGLE empennage-mounted gun. 10/10 J7W pilot u def good at your job.

Literally only 15 feet apart, with a Machine gun that has a long enough barrel designed to have top notch accuracy, and a perfect line of sight perfectly aimed that the guys head... And she still misses everything but the fucking wings, and only kills him with luck.

The general shape (except the tail) is close to the single-seat Nakajima Ki-87, a Japanese high-altitude fighter-interceptor which made its maiden flight on April 1945. Here the airframe has two seats (back to back) and (like the French SNCASE SE.100) the twin triangular tailfins (but they don't house the tail wheel). Another difference with the Ki-87: the Nakajima prototype had a large turbo-supercharger only on the right side, while the Santa Cruz has two smaller ones, one on each side.
