Prince as a performer; he could steal the spotlight, share the spotlight, or let someone else have it and let them have their moment. Prince as a musician was from another planet.

Prince was a musical prodigy! His first album was him playing all the instruments and when it came time to tour the album he put together a band. He was a far better guitar player than he gets credit for because his animated persona overshadowed everything else. Dude was incredible in all facets of creating music.

@@rickss69 Prince was a very competent songwriter, producer, and guitarist, with flair and panache, but he's not the most skilled or best guitarist out there. Of note: Clapton has also said, at various times, that SRV, JJ Cale, Buddy Guy were the best guitarists. Of course, Clapton hasn't hung around jazz cats like Joe Pass, Al Dimeola, George Benson much, nor did he ever share a stage with Terry Kath (whom Hendrix is quoted as saying was better than he was) nor Lenny Breault, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Danny Gatton, and so many others. There is no best or greatest guitarist. Too many metrics, too many genres. It's impossible to say.

He had a massive fan base, musicians would consider it an honor to collaborate with him, the media would covet any interview he was prepared to do, he played one of the all-time best performances at super bowl ffs - I'm not sure what it takes to be considered "appropriately rated" by these people. Princes had that ear. like that actor in th movie whiplash (forget the aggressive bs), prince wanted perfection He wasn’t the best guitar player. Stevie Ray Vaughan , Randy Rhodes , Eddie, Ritchie Blackmore, Dude from ufo were probably all better than prince on the strings. But prince could write a song. Since everyone is talking about seeing him live let me get my 2 cents in. I saw him in concert 6 times starting in 1981 on his Controversy Tour. It was cool for me seeing him pre-superstardom and after. That 1st concert I saw was in a 3900 seat auditorium in a small city in Georgia. I knew then and there that he would go on to something special, but couldn't have imagined what was to follow. A short 3 years later Prince and the Revolution were selling out multiple dates in major cities across the U.S. including The Superdome and The Orange Bowl(which they renamed The Purple Bowl for the concert). I have attended over 100 concerts and have always told people that The Purple Rain Tour is my favorite of them all. I caught two shows on that tour. I feel honored to have witnessed part of his journey.

What's crazy about Prince is everyone knows he plays guitar, but he can't justifiably be categorized as a guitar player. Hearing him play without a band, on an acoustic, there's no denying his acumen, and adroitness is on par with top tier guitarists. Unequivocally, the man was an exceptional guitar player, it's just his chops were that tight on several instruments. His understanding of each was based on their respective foundations, and specialized techniques. So if he's on keys, he's not a guitar player on keys, he's the flippin'' piano man. And still, this falls short of describing his musicianship, because he was also able to compose unique parts for each of these instruments, from their unique perspectives, all at the same time, which made him a beast in the studio. When he'd take it on the road, he was also able to lead other musicians to hit all his subtle nuances on their instruments while he's playing guitar. He wasn't just a prodigy, he was a prodigy among prodigies. Obviously, this video got me thinking. I don't think I've ever heard Prince playing solo on acoustic before. This kind of hit me like hearing Hendrix play Hear My Train a Comin' on a 12 string for the first time. I'm glad KZread pushed the post.

I remember when I was learning guitar back in the early 90's and saw a top 100 list of best guitarists ever in a magazine and noticed that was Prince was high up in the list somewhere, it's crazy because most people see him as a singer/performer rather than a guitarist and don't really appreciate just how good he was, at least the magazine knew his talent.
