Some time ago the Queen and Prince Philip visited Portsmouth where some German friends were visiting, they stood excitedly in the crowd and were amazed with Prince Philip stopped to speak to them, when he realised they were German he conversed with them in that language and called the Queen to come and say Hello and she also spoke to them in German too. They came away and spoke about it for days to anyone who would listen. It made such a great impression on them and it was also the high point of their holiday.

He speaks like someone who was brought up speaking it. It has all grown a bit rusty and sometimes he has to search for a word, but it is a native accent, not something acquired in later life. Remarkable! But he had no foreign accent in his English either, not one I can distinguish, anyway. He makes an interesting point: development aid has led to population growth in the countries receiving it, not to increased prosperity. No idea how that conundrum can be solved.

Some of the curious things in his grammar or structure, as well as his vocab difficulties, are completely normal for someone who lived in an english-speaking environment for an extended amount of time, let alone decades. I had some oddities in my grammar and sentence structure after just a year of living in America, with my family, so I still spoke a lot of German. And yet my brain partly rewired, so that I applied English grammar to German sentences. It is remarkable how good he still spoke German after decades of being surrounded by English, and having to construct all of that on the spot. His accent is native, he uses colloquial pronunciations like "Jacht" (spoken something like "Jakht" with "kh" being a guttural sound) instead of "Jagd".

What's already been said is correct. But I will say it again in 2022, he keeps having to look for the right word as he's been away from German for while. But the accent.... that's a native German accent. It's amazing. This is a side of Prince Philip I have never seen. His comprehension is 100%. This guy was a native speaker or at least at native speaking level, before being separated from it for a while.

He grew up in Germany for many years, had many German close family members in Hessen, where he would often visit and stay for months (mainly as a teenager). He grew up speaking Deutsch, surrounded by native speakers. His three sisters were married to Germans. It is indeed impressive, that he still speaks accent free Deutsch perfectly. I also speak Deutsch/English fluently and catching myself mixing the languages happens all the time, even though Im living in Germany most of the time. I probably wouldnt have noticed anything when he said "Manatee" instead of (and I googled this!) Rundschwanzseekühe ... I never heard that name in my life. He speaks perfect is what I wanna highlight. But he basically grew up as a German, if he wouldnt speak atleast fluently, it would be a bit odd. Is it common that even if you do not speak the language that often anylonger, that you still keep it accent free even after years? Im pretty sure this happens and gives even more credit to him. Bloody hell

His focused languages as toddler surely were German by heritage (as this outstanding proof & in mind he hadn't really been around a German environment since mid 1930s as teenager to keep on speaking!) and of course Greek since he should inherit that throne. His perfect English and French (surely coming AFTER German & Greek as Mother Tongues in Elementary Boarder School) are more than enough. Danish is to specific and if he's not up to inherit that throne it's rather pointless. I'm sure he knows a few small talk sentences in Dutch, Swedish, Norsk, Danish.... on Official Royal Receptions. Also easy to be learnt at a later age in case if really needed. Most degenerated ppl nowadays can't even speak their sole mother tongue proper. In a time we know every hair and implant on Kim Asshole it's rather sad we know so little plain facts about head of states for 70 yrs. Such public figures and we rather had no private insight at all. It's just coming lately to surface what a real family they were. Better than most with their little jobs and troubles, yet got ridiculed for decades as bad parents. The house of Windsor used to be the house of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. They are literally descendants of German royalty. Saxony > Anglo Saxon, and Engels > England. They still marry German royals like during WW1.

Prince Philip was at school in Germany before moving to the UK, in the early 1930s and then going to Gordonstone School in Scotland. He also lived in France for years as a young child, when his family were exiled and went to school there, so he also speaks French. Modern Greek too since his father was brother to the King of Greece.

@@adambrocklehurst4211 Well that's how the monarchy worked, every european noble house was international and they all conversed in french for along time and espescially the english and eastern european houses had a huge german influence aswell back in the day. If you look at all the old dukes and barons and lords from the former Polish kingdom, Galicia, Austria-Hungary, Russia or Estonia you see alot of German names. Kaiser Wilhelm, Zar Nikolas and King George were all cousins and grandchildren of Queen Victoria for example. There's interesting personal letters they wrote to each other in german shortly before they started World War 1 (they call each other Willi, Nikki and Georgie). The King of Spain was also the King of the Netherlands. People nowadays forget it because our world works very differently now, but like up until 150 years ago the nation states weren't really established, europe was a collection of many regions that were somehow divided under these pretty international, interconnected noble families.

Und da er innerhalb der Verwandtschaft auch noch ständig hin- und hergereicht wurde, sprach schon mit elf Jahren fünf Sprachen.
