I seriously hope this becomes successful enough that people with decision making capabilities at these art factories (EA, ubi, WB etc.) start pushing for smaller but much more well thought out experiences. I'm tired of hearing about broken experiences

idk what you call broken experiences, but if you think that Raytracing is a meaningless performance hog, you are not worth a discussion. this game simply runs this well, because it doesn't push any nextlevel visuals. Now, the music they used in the trailer really makes me avoid this game anyway... But if you think simplifying gfx is the way to get good performance, it's just because you can't afford the better experience.

Art styles like this will keep a game looking good in 20 years.

It’s just you chronically-online people that think that “more AAA games” is the problem. I want more of them like all the normies, and they can live alongside these smaller experiences just fine. Just buy what you find more fun (I guess indies and AAs) and it’ll be fine, trust me.

It needs to be a mix. Because the AAA blockbuster open world (god, I hope open world dies one day, I had enough of those...) is just what a lot of people want. So a mix, like one AC and three smaller games like this, would be perfect.

Im just glad in this day and age. We have Ubisoft of all people showing us you can target weaker hardware and still have great design and visuals. All the while allowing PS5 and XSX to actually flex 4k/120. Which is actually amazing.

I'm loving that these larger publishers are beginning to have confidence in crafting more scaled back yet greatly refined/polished experiences. Another that comes to mind in the last year is Star Ocean Second Story R - both this and Prince of Persia hopefully setting a standard for what the series should become moving forward.

Even though the game has simple visuals, I like how they tried hard to achieve the maximum that every single console can offer. > All platforms run at 60fps with the PS5 and Xbox Series X even reaching 120fps. > They offered the maximum resolution that the Nintendo Switch can offer in both docked and handheld mode at 60fps. > It runs at 1080p even on the old 2013 Xbox One. > It runs at native 4K not only on Xbox One X but even on the weaker PS4 Pro. You just don't see this level of dedication and optimization nowadays with most games, I would say the only thing they missed is not offering a 120fps mode on the Series S or a 4K mode (since if the PS4 Pro can do, the Series S would probably be able to do too ), but 1440p/60fps is more than great for an entry-level console.

Not to say this game isn't well optimized but it seems that the target was the Switch running at 1080p 60 in docked mode and 720p 60 in handheld and scaled up from there. This would explain why it runs so well on all other platforms and scales well from a performance metric. Much of the game's look was derived from the switch version and further enhancements were made to suit the more powerful hardware of the home consoles. This is why even the Xbox One turns in a 1080p 60fps, when that was rare for the console even when it was the main console for Microsoft as it mostly did 720p 30fps or 900p 30fps

They take advantage of the capabilities of the machine they are working on and if one machine can't handle certain aspects then they simply eliminate that code...that bearded guy that designed the series x/s explained this when the consoles were released about this programming approach.

I know this is a shot in the dark, but seeing a smaller scale title makes me hope we'll get a sequel to Child of Light someday. Such an underrated game that's gathering digi-dust.

Child of Light is really good! History-wise, I feel it ended properly, so a direct sequel would not be necessarily ideal, but a similar gameplay and art would be very welcome.

So I will say even though the game has a 2d side perspective, this does not feel like a smaller scale project. I'm about 10 hours in, and this stands shoulder to shoulder with the Sands of Time Trilogy for me. It's going to be one of my top games of 2024 for sure. @@leonro I operate under the assumption that every company is run by horrible people and just try to ignore it. The company's job is just to make the product make money. Doesn't mean the artists and engineers that create the product don't deserve success. In the case of a game like this it's pretty obvious something the developers really cared about and probably had to fight for it within Ubisoft, which is why they deserve the world. Refusing to reward good games because of other mishaps just reinforces the bad practices that keep making them money.

Ubisoft has such talented studios and beloved franchises under them, too bad the top management is just greedy and incompetent. Rare to get a good game like this from Ubi these days, don't like the hairstyle of the main character though 😅

8:41 I don't know how DF could claim that "You will not be able to spot any of these dips to performance with VRR enabled" and "VRR solves this issue entirely". I can ABSOLUTELY notice a 20fps dip with VRR. No question. I don't like where DF has headed these past few years. It's like performance has taken a back seat to things like RT, GI, SSR, etc.

I hope it will be a commercial success. In the last 25 years, major game studios released hardly any 2D platformers. A few exceptions: Super Mario Wonder (2023), Metroid Dread (2021), Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (2014). They basically don't exist apart from a few titles on Nintendo consoles -- and the low budget indie game market. May Prince of Persia change something about that trend!

I know the response to the trailer was extremely negative but as soon as I saw Ubisoft Montpellier were behind it I had so much confidence. The fact that I'm excited to play a NEW Prince of Persia game really is something I never thought I'd feel again

I'm a fan of this franchise, specially of Sands of Time and the 2008 reboot, and I must admit I was one of the many players who really felt disappointed with the first official trailers of this game. My reaction was literally like "Oh crap, this looks like a mobile game, the character looks so off, and we're back to 2D gameplay again!!" ... But with each gameplay and overviews showed, my expectations completely changed, I ended up liking the character, seems interesting enough, and the artstyle and overall look of the game actually look great to me. Most important, it really seems FUN to play! I guarantee I'll definitely buy this, sooner or later. Already in my wishlist.

@@aninfinitemindofmusicandreams same, man. Same. I absolutely loved the game world of it, the aesthetics and the musics. The characters were so great, just as the story and even the ending. It is an outstanding game from start to finish imho. I played it once on PC and twice on PS3, would love to have some kind or remaster or even just a simple port to PS5.

Visually and technically this game reminds me of a 7th gen game but not in a bad way. The heavy use of baked lighting and shadows is put to good use thanks to it's fixed time of day. This is probably due to it being developed for the Switch first and foremost with it retaining 60fps and then scaled up for the more powerful home consoles. Interesting to see a title like this from Ubisoft today but it is welcome. Now only if we can see a return to the engine used in Rayman Legends because that title is beautiful and has aged extremely well just like many 2D titles. Yes it's not entirely 2D but it's blend of the two is immaculate. Maybe Ubisoft is finally trying to clean up shop and become a good studio again

@@iwatatiff It's too expensive to maintain proprietary engines if they're not delivering massive hits to justify the expense. Ubi still has Anvil and Snowdrop for its proprietary engines, and smaller titles like Just Dance or Lost Crown make more sense on an engine like Unity where you can hire devs off the street already familiar with the tools and architecture. It can take 6-12 months to learn the code base on a big, proprietary engine, which just isn't efficient when your turnover is high.

I really shouldn't take for granted the consistent high quality of Linneman's videos for DF: this was truly brilliant.

As much as I love the Sands of Time trilogy, I welcome the franchise's return to its platform roots. Just wish that run animation looked more dynamic, though. One of the best parts of classic POP was that buttery-smooth (even for today) run animation.

Indie studios should note the lack of heavy, slow-paced platformers like the original PoT. Ubisoft is clearly not interested in making that, seeing as they have decided against making it many times now.

That attempted forced login thing is a real deal breaker.

This has looked excellent from the reveal, and I'm so glad to see PoP return to it's challenging sidescrolling roots. To see Metroid Dread and Hollow Knight influences is great, and that they nail the Switch version is paramount. Stoked!

Awesome analysis. Glad to see the Switch version looks and runs well and it doesn't require the login. Will definitely be getting it on Switch.

Knew I had a good feeling about this game! Jazzed to see everyone loves it. As much as PS5 looks pretty, I'll probably go with Switch for portability and being able to get around that Ubisoft account nonsense. Cheers, Digital Foundry!

I will probably go with Steam version so I can play it in both auto-HDR on my LG OLED with any controller I like (DS4) and on a future Steam Deck 2 whenever that comes out.

A reminder to the readers that Ubisoft Montpellier (the creator of this game) is one of the best studios from the company: - OG Rayman games and Rayman Origins - Beyong Good & Evil - Valiant Hearts - From Dust - Peter Jackson's King Kong

It seems in recent times developers are finally putting the extra horse power of Xbox Series X to use.

The idea that these types of games have worn out their welcome is an opinion that I heartily disagree with! I love these Metroid style games, I live and breath them, and this one looks INCREDIBLE (doesn't hurt that I also consider Sands of Time as one of my top ten fav games).

I enjoy these games too but I feel we are in the minority, so his opinion is well warranted. Remember, just because you enjoy something doesn't automatically mean everyone else feels the same way.

When Laika Aged Through Blood comes out on Switch I’d really love a performance review on that! It’s the sort of game I really want to play and would probably prefer it on Switch due to portability but if there are major frame rate differences then I would lean towards a stationary console.

So glad to see the game is running well, and getting good reviews too. I was honestly stoked for the announcement, and at the thought of seeing Prince of Persia return to its 2D roots. But the crowd reaction was pretty hostile, and I'm glad public opinion is changing. Also nice to see cross-platform saves, which is really not happening often enough. I'm definitely looking forward to picking this up on Switch.

This is the same studio that made all the good Rayman games ( the ps1 games and Origins, Legends) and Beyond Good and Evil.

Its about time that the hardware is actually fully used for once. The difference in popularity between the Series X and PS5 has really been hurting Xbox since PS5 keeps being favored for optimization as a result.

I *kinda* wanted to play this before, but knowing the team that made it? I'm so in.

I have a weak laptop and yet, I was still able to play this game on medium settings in 60 fps. Very good optimization.

Had a feeling this game would be good. Glad to know the Switch version was given the care it needed, that's the one I was planning to play.

I agree it its with HW, Oris and Meteoid Dread one of the best Metroidvanias ever created.

It's nice to see that Ubisoft Montpellier can actually release games still lol they're certainly taking their sweet time with Beyond Good and Evil 2

Wow, didn't think this was gonna be this good. Had my hopes it would turn out to be okay-ish. But this is looking really good! I actually want to play the game on the Steam Deck, but unfortunately it's not available here. (Maybe in the future?) So i think i will go for the PS version.

Ubi has been making their PC versions Connect/Epic exclusive -- but timed. So this should come to PC within a year or two.

Hands down, John is still the best reviewer on DF. I miss his AAA reviews but at least he gets to follow his passion projects more

I love this mini Ubisoft renaissance: Avatar FoP, Prince of Persia, AC Mirage. They're listening to fans who wanted smaller, single-player focused games. I hope they understand that these games are more profitable on the long run.

Once I found out this was created by the same team that made Rayman Legends, it became an immediate day one purchase. I do appreciate DF getting this Tech Review done prior to release.

I tried Rayman Legends for the first time recently and didn’t like it at all unfortunately. It felt like a mobile game with lots of collectibles and unlockable all same but different characters. I love metroidvanias such as Hollow Knight, Blasphemous and Ori 1 but didn’t like Bloodstained’s visual style that much (which is close to this). I wonder if I would like this or not?

Huh, the only sidescrollers I ever really enjoyed were the new/old Rayman games. I wasn't keeping track of this until you mentioned they worked on it, I guess I'll have to try it on Steam Deck

Looking at the traversal, I get vibes of the game ‘Unbound’. That game felt really good to traverse once you had most of the power ups so I’m hoping this feels similar. I’m glad there’s a physical version for the Switch too.

The reason for the game offering only no AA, FXAA or SMAA as options probably has less to do with design intentions and more to do with those being the default options in Unity.that take next to no effort to implement.

TAA is trivial to add in any version of Unity. You don't end up making a game run well on half a dozen platforms if you're also the kind of dev who would choose the AA method based on "this was already there when I opened the editor". They could have used TAA and chose not to.

@@forasago I checked the URP documentation (assuming that's what they're using), and while you are right that it is trivial If you were to use the latest version right now, you don't have to go back all that far for that to not be the case. As far as I can tell that was only added in URP version 14, which is only compatible with Unity 2022.3 and up. For a project like this, it's hardly guaranteed they'd be using something that new.

Day 1 game. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻50€ is ok for a game without bugs and stuttering like almost all the other 80€ games.

I wonder what's going on in Montpellier. They're also the ones running the entirely cursed project of Beyond Good&Evil 2, now without Michel Ancel who felt he has been pushed out for a long time, and then just quit to tend to wild life. This was 3-4 years ago now and he said that it should be well on its way then, in a polite exit letter. But it didn't seem like it was well on its way.

I was about to get this thinking it would be $20-$30 as a side scroller and seen it’s $50. Game looks great but I will wait for a sale! I’m looking forward to playing it.

@@vikashv1 I’m on PlayStation and it gets the Ubisoft collection for free for PS Plus Extra members and I’d say within 8 months this will be on there, but if I can nab it in the next few months for $20 I’m going to dive on it.

That's not the Prince, but rather one of his guards or something like that. Regardless it's still asinine to have a PoP game where you don't play as the prince.

I remember people hating on this game at its reveal but im really glad it turned out great in the end. It was a shame they didn't use the Ubi Art framework engine for this, its likely that engine will never be used again now, but I really hope that Ubisoft can start making smaller but more focused games based on this game's reception.

Downloading the demo at the moment, very happy with all the good reviews and the great looking footage, this series really deserves a comeback. I'm a bit worried that the price will scare people away, 2D games for 50 bucks or more might be too much for some. I happily buy a fun and polished 2D game for that price, not sure how many think the same way.

This feels a slight call back to the original Prince of Persia games. With the side scrolling gameplay. Loved those games. Can't wait to pick this up.

Last year was the best gaming year ever and this year is already starting with a bang. I cannot wait to play this.

Wild to me that Apple wanted Ubisoft to port AC Mirage for iOS devices and skipped on Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Mirage will probably not run that well on the iPhone, but I've just played the Prince of Persia Demo and it would be perfect for mobile gaming. Reminds me a lot of Deadcells and the likes and seems actually fun so far. Furthermore Prince of Persia is made in Unity, so a way better engine to port to iOS... My guess is Apple wants to show: look, a full open world triple A title, but misses out on games that would actually play great on mobile. Wild to me, maybe a later release if Ubisoft recognizes the potential money they could make...

Yeah if they wanted it to be on iOS they could have had it be a feature title for it running at 120fps on iPhone and iPad as well as native resolution on both. Would have been a great title but PoP doesn't carry the same weight as Assassin's Creed does now

I always love John's videos on DF. He puts so much care into his videos and doesn't stand for industry BS, he also really appreciates when a developer puts in the effort to do the job well.

Great video! The mandatory login issue would be a deal breaker if there was not a way around it! I do wonder if the Series X version will be on the disc or not, glad to see all versions seem to be great!

@@Metallian81 Luckily there is a way around that, uninstall the game and disable the internet and reinstall the game and you will have the build on the disc again!

Who else thinks there is too many quality Metroidvania's out there? ......Anyone? Hmmm sorry John, you might be alone with that hot take. Given how eagerly every single fan of Hollow Knight is waiting for any information about Silksongs release I don't think it's like we have a tonne of them dropping every other week.

I bet the team went the route that the Switch version is the base version, super optimized, making sure it runs really well on that console, before improving things for the other versions, kinda like what Playtonic did for Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair!

Seriously looks like a great game. I will buy this on switch (even tho i have a 4k monitor), i cannot stand uplay and since it's 60fps on switch, that's all i care. (srsly, screw Uplay, i refuse to buy anything with it nowadays) Thank you John :)

Im sure many people will love this new visual style, anime elements, boss battles, and flashy jumps and animation, but this ain't "Prince of Persia". I was a fan of the original 2D PoP and this has absolutely nothing in common, they might as well have called it something else.

When I first saw this game I was "Nah, this is not my Prince" but seeing more gameplay and the exceptional performance I am getting interested. I like the genre, most of the time.

@@cube2fox Yeah, his design grew a bit on me, but it really felt like someone just went "We need something. Anything. Quick. They want the design NOW!" Kind of... out of place. At least in the beginning. Not sure if I will ever really LIKE his design and (I am no expert on this) I dont think it fits very well into the persian themes.

I like everything I see except the main character's hair being stylized like a modern drill rapper. Make it make sense

I just want to know if this is coming to Steam so i can play it on Steam Deck. Seems perfectly suited for it!

just played the demo on series x. the ONLY thing bad about this demo is that it cuts out as soon as the first big boss shows up. whcih is a shame. but it deos make you want to go and play the real game immediately. great visuals, sounds and controls and fun abilities and combos, the combat animations are great. i skipped the dialogues and cut scenes but the game seems great from the demo.

Perfect example of a game instead of a tech demo.

Still waiting for the Sands of Time remake here..

It's refreshing to get a game on so many platforms that just works out of the box on them all, but it's sad that it needs to be highlighted because of how many games are being released with issues on one platform or another. Also John, you can never have enough of these styles of games, it's not wearing out it's welcome, at least not for me.

They targeted the Switch as their base platform, and then added more for the other platforms. Makes sense lol. Glad the series is back!

It kinda reminds me of the old Aladdin game on Nintendo. I loved that game as a kid. lol.

I‘ve played the very first Prince of Persia on an old 286 with a black & white (more green and gray) CRT back than😮 This is such a back to origin thing to me ❤ (the fact they‘ve gone back to 2D)

The first Prince of Persia was quite different though, as the movement was entirely grid based. With predefined fluid animations when moving from grid to grid. It was often based on planning ahead and avoiding traps instead of action. The new game is more similar to Super Mario Bros (1985), where the movement was pixel based and the character could be steered to an extent while in the air.
