Little red corvette is a metaphor for a fast woman. She is the little red corvette. He is saying she needs to find a love that will last, to slow down before she drives herself into the ground.

MJ is one of the best entertainers ever, but he can't touch Prince. Prince could play like 27 instruments and had more swag than anybody. There will never be another Prince.

We love Dave Chappelle. Prince did too. He used Dave’s image of himself on one of his records. Yes James Brown was one of his many influences. You are correct not to compare him to Michael Jackson. They were constantly compared because they were the same age and popular during the same era. Michael can sing and dance, but Prince does everything. He played all the instruments on his first 5 albums. He was a prolific song writer and produced his own records and records of others.

Prince and Dave Chappelle were friends. Prince even confirmed the story lol. Prince’s real gems are his live performances. You should react to America (Live 1985).

Prince is amazing and one of a kind. Nobody has more talent. He taught himself to play over 20 instruments, wrote thousands of songs, produced his own recordings, was a fantastic dancer and his vocals are legendary. He sang in 4 1/2 octaves. He's our Mozart and also a notorious ladies man. Women were crazy about him! You should check out 1999, Let's Go Crazy or Lady Cab Driver next

Prince and MJ really are apples and oranges musically. People always compare them because they were both making music in the same time period & were the same age, but they really are very different. I also think that part of the comparison comes from them being some of the few black musicians that we’re getting crossover airplay at the time. MJ’s music is much easier to get into. It’s radio friendly. Prince is a little more challenging because he was pushing boundaries. The lyrics had double meanings and his look always confused people who were looking for someone to fit in a box. Even today i know people who see Prince as a “guy who did antics” because they can’t see past the visuals, but they see MJ as an all around entertainer. Whoever someone likes the best between them is a personal choice. Both of them excelled at their crafts. I’d say that Prince was more of a musician’s musician. When you start digging deep into his music & what he put into it, the level of appreciation for how good he was grows.

@@teddyjackson1902i was there too and pre-purple rain/thriller there was not a lot of crossover going on. Mtv wouldn’t show black musician’s videos. Crossover grew as the 80’s went on, but there were separate charts and separate radio stations. There was some music getting it, but a ton of music not getting crossover play.

Prince danced with James Brown when he was a kid and was heavily influenced by him, along with Carlos Santana and Sly Stone...among others. But at the same time he was his own person.

A lot of Prince bars went over our heads in the 80’s when we were kids. It wasn’t until HS that we started to decipher the meaning, double entendre, and innuendo of Prince lyrics. Little Red Corvette was video was my introduction to Prince and I was in the 4th grade. I had no idea what he was as singing about all I knew was he had a magical voice and he was the black Fonzie who was the coolest dude on TV until I saw Little Red Corvette music video and on that day Prince became my musical hero.

When it comes to Prince, his music was like nothing on the radio at the time. So when people compare him to MJ it is because they they do not have a frame of reference. Prince was the critic's favorite because of his originality. MJ was great but his music was not known for its originality. So when young people compare any Prince songs, especially songs like When Doves Cry, they were so out there at the time that they sounded like nothing on the radio.

If you like the 80s vibe, 'Raspberry Beret' could be one of MANY. Also I highly recommend 'Kiss', 'Sign O the Times' and 'Cream' which all hit No. 1 and really original. One of the most important things about Prince is that he did everything from songwriting, instrumentS to producing himself. It might take decades for us to understand the span of his musicology - funk, rock, soul, jazz as well as pop~ So happy you like his song!

Go back to the beginning and listen again to the lyrics. "She had a pocket full of horses, Trojans and some of 'em used". The entire song a metaphor for a "fast woman". He sure had ways to sneak lyrics past the sensors of the times!!😊😊

Prince was definitely inspired by James Brown, Little Richard, and Jimi Hendrix in his style of performing. That move he did with the fingers pulling away from his eyes was again inspiration taken from the 1960s TV show, Batman. There's an episode where Batman does his own dance called the "Batusi" and he does that exact move.

Hey BCP! I hope you're doing Amazing. Do not take any useless negative comments seriously. I'm glad you liked this song and someone in the comments already gave you the breakdown. You asked whether "Little Red Corvette" or "Billie Jean" was played more. First of all you should know that MJ & Prince are the First Batch of "Black Musicians" that recieved airplay on a "White Musician" dominated MTV and it was around this time because Mike had just released "Thriller" (1982) and Prince had released "1999" (1982), because of this and the Crazy Music Video/Short Film Concepts Mike had just become a Household name and a proper International Star whereas Prince only exploded in the Stratosphere of America, Europe and The Oriental Asia. So Mike definitely had more airplay, his name was being thrown around more but Prince did shock Mike with "Purple Rain" in 84, One of the Greatest Rock Musicals and it's Grammy winning Soundtrack with a Mega Concert Tour.

Billie Jean was played more. For Prince songs When Doves Cry and Kiss were Prince’s 2 biggest singles of his career upon their initial release. Purple Rain might be his biggest single over his whole career.

So when he referenced Jockeys,, he means all the men that effed her since she was a fast woman. You totally missed the first lines when he said, she had a pocket full of horses and some of them used. In other words, mostly used Condoms in her pocket. When he says, move over baby, give me the keys, I'm gonna tame your little red love machine. He was not talking about a car.

Michael and Prince truly were neck and neck. The Teams were strong for each (I'm Team Prince, by the way), but back then, we all listened to everything. You had your favorites but it didn't make you hate the others. We bought, played, and sang everything, LOL! And also, in all fairness, I think. Prince competed with Michael and not so much the other way around. Michael was Michael. However, as time went on, the rivalry died down, and when Michael passed, it was said he sent everyone home from work and mourned for days.

There are a lot of sexual innuendos throughout the song. The artist in the 80s didn’t graphically put it out there like they do today. Example: when he said, “I saw all the “Jockeys” that were there before me” he wasn’t actually referring to horse jockeys that ride in races. He was referencing men who’d been “riding” her. So she must’ve had pictures of guys ex-boyfriends or guys she dated.
