Prince was channeling something out of this world beyond our imagination . This solo was on a different level straight from the soul.

I think Prince had some of the best tone and feel on guitar ever.

Yes, Prince would often go to a smaller venue after playing in a big venue. He would usually do that or go to a studio and record after a concert. Just My Imagination is an old song, I believe by The Temptations.

Prince played after shows often. His after shows were legendary. Some tours he would do them practically after every show. They usually started really late (as late as 2:30AM sometimes) and went for an hour to an hour and a half. They would charge $20-25 for the show. The venues would be 200-300 people are so on average. He would donate the money made at after shows to local charities (local meaning where the show was).

Prince had too many great guitar solos to pick just one. He kicked ass on any instrument he grabbed. I saw him live, and every time, it was completely different than the last. His guitar solos always stood out above the rest. His solo during Purple Rain at the 1985 AMAs was insane just to name one. He could play like Hendrix one minute, then play like Santana the next. The dude was truly amazing.

Nobody can call any solo "the best" and that's causing a lot of comments here to miss the point... This is a phenomenal solo that, taken in its context, is extremely special and unique. Prince played this song a half dozen times during this period and no one version is the same as another. That's why he's so special - these are not rehearsed practiced solos. They are on the fly, in the moment compositions. He was the best all round talent we've ever seen. So to be even talking about him as one of the greats on a single instrument is mind blowing in itself.

Exactly. For example the Los Angeles 1988 version is more soothing, a more driving and breathing synthline. And his singing is also clearer and better. Love that version equally as much as Small Club for those reasons.

Prince lived for music, he was music.

One of the most sought after Prince bootlegs in the 80's. And in my top 10. This is a song by The Temptations. Also Prince was well known for leaving a big concert and do a aftershow in a smaller venue. He lived for music. And by the way that's Sheila E on drums.

And that's why I, somewhat, baited you into this video. This had to raise your eyebrow, "best solo really?". But my point is clear. Like you said, it might be up there. Not as THE greatest, but one of the greatest. Now you understand what we fans knew for a long time. He is the greatest all around artist of all time. This is a guitar solo from a contemporary "popstar" at his height of ARTISTRY 1987-1988. He released Adore, When 2 R In Love, If I Was Your Girlfriend and recorded Pink Cashmere during those two years. Pure RnB masterpieces and ballads, not guitar driven at all (well, Pink Cashmere ending solo is exception to the rule, but what a solo!!!). And this is Prince in his purest form. Looking at contemporary music and letting us know, "well I'm going to throw out every formula, for creating a top 10 billboard song, out the window and just make MY music. No genre, no rules, just my creations". And he succeeded!! Unbelievable genius. This while he was one of the best singers around (low bass to falsetto is unmatched). One of his generations best dancers around, in high heels I might add. (Hey MJ fans, I said ONE OF!!). Songwriter. And I can go on and on and on. Now give me an example of a contemporary pop star that has even done anything even remotely close? I'm waiting, and will be waiting until my last breath.

I agree! Everyone forgets how incredible this Purple Rain solo was. Prince was other worldly.

In German language we use "Schwanzvergleich" as a common term. It means co_ _ comparison. There is no use at least to say someone did the best drum solo or whatever, since we talk about music from a personality. What we can say is, this solo fits perfectly into that song... You always need a context behind it. Time, chords, sounding, expression, space, surrounding, etc. We should promote less of our ego-mindsets in music so to say.

On this double cd you will find a few more excellent solos by prince!

This song was originally done by the Temptations which was sung as a so sweet motown ballad. Prince took it whole different level. One of my favorite guitar solos and his band just killed it. Had to be Michael Bland or John Blackwell on drums who were masters in their own right. Whole song was a masterpiece.

Cool reaction. This is a famous bootleg thats been circulating for yrs. Its literally called "Small club" from holland. I saw a clip of the show, it was a pretty big stage. Band was spread out. Typical night for prince and the band was 2 hr sound check, then madhouse or sheila e open for a hour, then the 2 hour concert, maybe 3, then prince would say, "find a club in town" then that would be another 2 or 3 hour set. Once w the revolution, they did that and their wardrobe didnt make it to the show the next night because they were out so late performing. They were Prob going to repeat the outfits but they needed to be dry cleaned in the next city and werent ready. You might appreciate " feline" that has some nice guitar solos in there. Pretty good and yes Prince was a much better guitarist than a lot of people realise. As for 'Best Guitar Solo Ever? .....err? I think NOT! Enough said.
