Prince Andrew Lords Introduction 1 Feb 1987

Previously all major royals were introduced into the House of Lords, with the removal of most hereditary peers - this is now no longer the case - the last member of the Royal Family to be introduced was Prince Andrew in 1987.

I hate Tony Blair for excluding the hereditary peers from the House of Lords. If the Lords was becoming too populated, reforms could be passed. A reform could pass where a peer must retire after the age of seventy-five or after twenty years of service in the chamber, whichever may come first. Tony Blair introduced party politics into the Lords and it has now become biased compared to what it was before 1999.

Would make more logical sense, as bishops in the Church of England and the Law Lords had mandatory retirement ages, and hereditary and life peers, except for the Duke of Norfolk (Hereditary Earl Marshal of England) and the Marquess of Cholmondeley (Lord Great Chamberlain), should be subject to mandatory retirement age (70) much like the Senators in the Canadian Parliament. However one of the biggest differences between a Royal Duke (like Charles, as Duke of Cornwall in England and Duke of Rothesay in Scotland) and a Noble Duke (like the Duke of Norfolk) is that Royal Dukes are not permitted to speak in sessions of the Lords. That was one of the main reasons why the former Edward VIII, upon abdication, was made a Royal Duke, given that George VI didn't want his older brother to cause headaches in the Chamber of Peers had he just simply enobled him as "His Grace, The Duke of Windsor". As for Norfolk and Cholmondeley, when they turn 70, their heir apparents, as Earl of Arundel (Norfolk) and Earl of Rocksavage (Cholmondeley) would be called to sit alongside of their fathers, allowing the transition to start so that when the incumbents pass or are physically unable to carry out their duties, Arundel and Rocksavage can just simply pick up the duties in an official or acting capacity.

Why should hereditary peers have a say in the laws of the land due soley to the fact they were born?! The Royal peers rarely, if ever, attended debates and votes in the Lords anyway. Blair was right to abolish them and he should have gone further and made the upper chamber fully elected.

Amusing how many comments here wanted to keep the hereditary peers and hate Tony Blair for taking them out, but these same people never commented on how David Cameron also packed the Lords with his own set of cronies. As much as I enjoyed watching this, I hope the Lords would become similar to Australia's Senate. But the Commons should be reformed while that's being done.
