On Friday, June 21, 2024, Prime Minister Hon. James Marape embarked on an urgent trip to Western Province to assess and support communities affected by the devastating floods along the Fly River. The flood has caused significant displacement across various districts in the province.
Upon landing in Kiunga, North Fly District, Prime Minister Marape, accompanied by Western Province Members of Parliament, traveled by helicopter to the hardest-hit areas in Obo (Middle Fly), Suki (South Fly), and Awaba (Delta Fly) electorates.
Joining him were Minister for Works and Telefomin MP Hon. Solan Mirisim and Defense Minister and Nipa-Kutubu MP Hon. Dr. Billy Joseph.
Prime Minister Marape expressed deep sympathy for the affected communities, personally engaging with them and offering comfort. He announced immediate relief and restoration assistance from the National Government, pledging K10 million in support. This was further supplemented by a K20 million commitment from Ok Tedi Mining Ltd, and combined contributions of K6 million from the Western Provincial Government and local district development authorities.
Additionally, the National Disaster Office allocated K1 million, and the Department of Works and Highways provided K500,000 for relief efforts.
PM Marape also arranged for fresh food supplies to be delivered from neighboring Highlands districts, including Nipa (Southern Highlands Province), Telefomin (West Sepik Province), and Tari-Pori (Hela Province), as part of the ongoing food relief efforts.
