Pride of Birmingham 2022: Emergency Services Award PC Mat Evans

PC Evans was on a trip to London when he saw the incident at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.
Mohammed Uddin, who was under the influence of alcohol and drugs, had ambushed a 999 worker outside the hospital, stabbing them in the chest.
PC Evans positioned himself between the attacker and the victim, preventing a further attack, and identifying himself as a police officer.
As Uddin ran away, PC Evans rugby tackled him and grabbed the knife. Bystanders were filming the scuffle, and some even attacked PC Evans, believing he was the aggressor.
He kept hold of Uddin until police officers arrived, despite suffering bite injuries to his hand, and went on to make a full statement. Thanks to his evidence, Uddin was later convicted of wounding with intent and jailed for 12 years.
The victim underwent emergency surgery and made a full recovery.

We need more officers like PC Evans! 🤩 There's no question that he saved the stab victim's life and, possibly, the lives of other potential victims, too, that day. I've never had a lot of faith in the police but the behaviour of that crowd was too far - it was disgraceful. How can you not support someone who is trying to disarm a potential murderer, especially one in your own neighbourhood?! If he hadn't won, any member of that crowd could have been the knifeman's next victim... They'd do well to remember that. I'm immensely grateful that officers like Mat Evans choose to put on a uniform and serve our communities - they're safer because of it. Congratulations on your very well deserved recognition! 👍😎
Should be an award of a hell of a beard.
