My take is, she shocked him when he first met her and being a man of high social standing he was avoiding her because of her social standing and couldn’t embarrass himself and his family. They truly were a family with no morals in their time. The more he observed her the more he became infatuated with her. She was well read but very opinionated.

And that is where he had me.. that was where I cried.. and that is also why this scene is so memorable.. Have to be honest here.. have read all the comments and replies about why Lizzie should have rejected Darcy.. and have to admit I would have accepted him.. In spite of all the garbage that came out of his mouth he truly loved her.. and when he said I love you.. most ardently.. his voice broke.. and so did my heart., for both of them.. Would have accepted him myself.. and I feel sure these two beautiful people would have helped each other to work things out between them.. Btw.. Matthew MacFadyen was brilliant as Darcy in this scene.. as well as throughout the entire film.. I have this movie and have practically worn it out watching it so much.. such a beautiful man he was., and still is❣ Jen999💙

The uno reverse.
It's all coming out wrong for both of them. Actually the way he says ' I love you ' so desperately exposes all his feelings. And the way she refuses the proposal also conveyed her desperate attempt to keep her self respect though she wants to accept with all her heart. Beautifully presented by both actors.

Amazing scene I tell you
the way he says "the inferiority of your birth"😂😂😂 goodness gracious, there should be lessons on how to propose to a lady without offending her and mr darcy should certainly take them, LOL i love him too much
''Inferiority of your birth'' & then ''I love you, most ardently'' in a proposal, I'd be like should slap & hug him the same time?!!?😑 BTW we shouldn't forget that it's story was set in early 1800s & this kind of thoughts were common but IDC I'd still slap him.🥴
@vae8652
Жыл бұрын
Elizabeth basically slaps him with her words as the scene continues - it’s not until a LONG time later when Darcy learns from his faults and grows, no longer criticizing her family for their low birth, that they get together. At the time it was common, but still not cool! With hard work they were able to get past the “pride and prejudice” from the rocky start of their relationship 😁

I did regret that this screen in the movie lacked this line from the book: "You are mistaken Mr.Darcy if you suppose that the manner of your declaration affected me in any other way as it spared me the concern that I might have felt in refusing you, had you behaved in a more gentleman-like manner. "
Actually I thought Matthew portrayed Mr Darcy perfectly.. I thought he was beautiful.. his gestures honest and eloquent.. his expressions genuine and exquisite.. his eyes exoressive.. his voice gentle and beautiful.. so heartbreaking at times.. and his words.. and the way he said them.. when he told her.. I love you..most ardently! On hearing that I cried.. fell in love with him myself I did.. Jen999💙

He loves, he loves, he loves her. Is that not a justification for ardently if he was ardent.
Keira Knightly is distractingly gorgeous!! Far too beautiful to Elizabeth!
She fits perfect in this role.
The expression on his face says how deeply he feels.. and when he says most ardently his true colors show.. yeah he has a lot of flaws.. he does not know how he sounds.. There he stands soaking wet and cold.. the rain running down his face.. baring his soul., doing his best.. your heart just goes out to him and you want her to accept him.. The way he says most ardently .. nothing else really matters.. how could she not see past his words into his heart.. and just love him.. The actor playing this scene was so beautiful and so into his character it broke my heart.. so beautiful to see this was.. Most ardently.. just a couple of words.. but oh., it was how he said them! Thank you so much for posting this! Jen999💙
Pride and prejudice...one of my favourite
The best movie version of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice as far as I am concerned .. Matthew and Keiras performances are Perfection. So many beautiful scenes in this movie. They snipe and argue throughout the show, fighting their own feelings for one another .. until finally .. they come together. And the scene with her father (Donald Sutherland) after he's talked to Mr. Darcy .. makes you cry when he realizes his sweet girl Lizzie has actually fallen in love.
I may or may not remember the lines of the proposal, but man.. MOST ARDENTLY.. 🔥

I love when they use so many fancy words but I understand them easily cause they're the English version of commonly used Spanish words.
That "I love you" was so brisk and cute❤and "most ardently". Falling in love with Mr. Darcy should be a legally approved thing. It's a universal thing❤
One of my favorite movie scenes of all time! I just wish the background music was softer here.
Most ardently 🥺
Look at him though, he is so genuinely in love with her. It's impossible to miss.
Later when she kisses his hand is the "acceptance of his 👋"

Oooh I never saw it that way! Brilliant observation.
They both had a lot to learn about each other. First impressions aren't always accurate. But Darcy and Elizabeth both had integrity, and it eventually showed through their actions, and actions speak far more loudly than words. You want to learn about someone's true character, watch what they do, not what they say. Darcy and Liz finally found their way to each other. It was quite the journey.
That's ok folks! He made up for it at the end!! 💘
This movie is the best version of all movies! Matthew and Lizzie really complement each other. Love the tension between them!
My grandma's whispered comment at the theatre: "This guy is very rude. And confused 😳" 😂😂😂😂
Elizabeth's response did enlighten Darcy as to the way he viewed her and her family. The arrogance of his ways and he took steps to better himself as a person, with integrity. He did not push her to love him. He grew, and he did it to better himself. In the end, he only proposed to her because of the conversation Elizabeth had with his aunt, which led him to hope he might have a small chance to redeem himself with a proper proposal.
Oh how to be loved by someone "most ardently" Still my fav character development to date: Mr. Darcy
A masterpiece there will not be or has been a better adaptation of P&P
At the end of the day he was extremely honest with her and he really did try his damnedest to get it out as fast and as nice as he could 🤣. "I know you dont have much and my family along with society will probably hate me or think im mental for this but i love you girl and i dont care what they say, marry me!" This was hard for me to watch because i kept laughing but it was so genuine and sweet in his way. Give him a break ☺️
I watch this movie a thousand times, I never get tired of watching it! Great love story!

He has such pretty eyes
I love this scene because this is the point of their growth especially Darcy. Without her telling him off, both would not come to understanding of each others circumstances at that time. Despite his harsh words, Lizzy understands some truth he said like her family and that she doesn't know the truth about Wickam. His social awkwardness is level 10 for sure but the scene before you can see him putting in effort. And its sad but compared to 1995 version, after the whole fiascos and Jane got proposed by Bingley, Darcy said he did the things for her and yet her rejection and truth words made him changed into a better person simply because it was the correct thing to do regardless if she accept him or not the 2nd time. What made me love him is his growth and willingness to take criticism and improve for the better. He had trust issues and rightfully so due to his family ranks and status which ladies will throw themselves at him thus making him brazen and cold to others for being wary. But those small moments when he could not contain his attraction towards lizzy is just 🤌🤌🤌❤️❤️❤️ truly pride and prejudice. A romance masterpiece between modern and conservative moment.
This is one of my favorite love stories. I love the music from the soundtrack and I love this movie with Keira Knightley
No men like him and no love like this. They give up on you sooo easily and move on… thats the way it is.

English is not my native language so i struggle a bit when reading jane austen's work. I appreciate this version because it really helps me understand the emotions & tone of the dialogues in the book. I understand that some fans prefer the 1995 version because the scenes are more accurate, but I feel like all the lines are merely recited and I can't really connect with how the characters feel in certain scenes. So yeah I've read the book twice now but this version of film adaptation? Most excellent thing to ever exist ✨
It's funny how everybody comments that it's a shitty proposal despite the obvious: he had to struggle with his family being against him, regect his birthright privileges, because he was so in love with her and she was socially no match for him (yes, it's not 21st century you people) and everybody: "That's the worst way to propose!". You all missed the meaning in his speech.
My favorite scene too. Despite his harsh and unflattering words, I would proceed to jump into his arms and kiss him passionately. Then I would look into his eyes and say “1000 %! 🥹😘
