Prey Drive - Self-Control For Your Dog

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video, i'll explain the importance of controlling the dog's drive, especially for high drive working dogs. Why is it so important, to teach the dog self control? For what do we need it? And when do we start?

    Yes and super important but often times people forget to do this. They only want high drive, more and more drive and later the dog is out of control and they put immense pressure on the dog… totally unnecessary if you do this in the beginning.

    Good lesson. I have a 16 month old GSD who has extremely high prey drive. He is obsessed with the ball. I will try this, especially with leash and ball on a rope. I have been using eye contact in my training and he is very good with it EXCEPT when I have a ball. He only has eyes for the ball. Also, he refuses to give up the ball, even for treats. I have a feeling I have a lot of training ahead of me. Unfortunately, I have a broken leg and ankle right now, making it difficult.

    Hey man how would you work a call off/ recall when the dog is in drive (chasing a ball for example)?

  • @trainingfromadogspointofview

    @trainingfromadogspointofview

    2 ай бұрын

    Hey! First, secure your recall with a leash. If you’re dog is too much in drive, you can hold him back and make him come back without having access of disobedience.

    I have a 18 month old golden who is highly prey driven not an instagram star ! How do I manage this ? He has already killed 2 bunnies I bird and a squirrel he goes insane when in the chase … I am working hard on recall which is great with no critters .He can drop it and leave it but not when it comes to small helpless mammals…any pointers ? I will try what you just showed it seems like a good training too.

    You need to start over, use a controllable environment and slowly increase the distractions / prey movements. Also, try to use all 4 quadrants (+R, -R, +P & -P) in your training, because the more experience a dog gets in the hunting behavior, the harder is becomes to control it because this is a self rewarding behavior.

    Hi! Try to start with very light prey impulses to distract your dog. Always make sure, your dog has a chance to success. Then slowly increase the prey impulse / distraction to make it harder step by step.

    A good way is to have two items that are exactly the same. Try to make an exchange game out of that so the dog never has the feeling of loosing something.

I am really afraid to start a play with her because i don't want to push her forward in this behavior but i know it is important to play with her 😐 she is a swiss mountain dog, so a working / herding dog.
