Thanks for your helpful videos. Your videos helped me immensely when I was just starting! I wanted to share what I have been doing that has killed all of my mites. I am using plastic tubs like you but instead of bug paper I am using diatomaceous earth. I put about a 1/4" - 1/2" layer of the white powder in the bottom of each tub and then set the jars directly into the powder so the fruit fly cultures are completely surrounded by the powder. I have been using the same powder for over a year now without changing it and it still works 100% and appears quite fresh. At the beginning, I could see piles of dead mites in the powder surrounding the bottom of each fly culture jar but now I don't notice any mites anywhere. I thought the powder might be messy and get everywhere but it doesn't. Also, since it's used outside of the jars it doesn't kill the flies. My cultures are booming and mite free thanks to your help, plastic tubs, diatomaceous earth, and HEHERP.

Thank you for posting this. I have the Diatomaceous Earth thankfully. I ordered some gloves though. I'm trying to avoid another collapse. We had a collapse last Saturday and had to hurry up and get more flies. Keep the information coming. Thank you.

Hey I know this is from 5 years ago, but I recently am doing fly cultures and I heard about the mites problem. I have lots of houseplants and buy predatory mites for spider mite infestations. Do you think that they could help curb mites from fruit flies? do you know what the species of mites is that attacks fruit flies?

A culture of mine is doing something I wasn't expecting. The flies seem lethargic. I am feeding them to praying mantids and a surprising number of mantids are dying. Could the 2 problems be related?

Just stumbled upon your channel today! I got my first dart frogs this morning, Phyllobates vittatus!! I'm hooked!! My house looks like your house only it's all fish tanks. I keep lots of cool fish including freshwater stingrays! They live in a 480 gallon system that I built in my bedroom. Now I'm probably going to go way overboard on frogs. Well anyway, wanted to introduce myself and let you know I love your videos and will be a loyal supporter from this day forward!!

This is why you shouldn't rely on a single food type. I always have some bean weevil cultures along with fruit flies, to avoid food shortages in cases like this.

@@debbiedebbie9473 I got them online from an exotic pet seller. Just do a search for bean weevil cultures and a few options in your area should pop up. They're super easy to breed and harvest. Just put 10 or so adults in some standard clear plastic pots with around 50 dried beans or peas and hey presto you have loads of them.

The mite paper ran out of its active ingredient and I didn't replace it in time to prevent this! They need a host to survive, so as long as I isolate all of the cultures with the mite paper, they should die off. I should also wipe down the whole shelf to disinfect. I'll throw out the cultures as they crash. They will crash before their natural end at 28 days. They may barely last three weeks if I'm lucky. I'm glad you enjoyed it!! Preventing mites is so valuable!!

Mites seem to eat fly and mealworm eggs, which causes a complete stop in the reproduction cycle. Mites breed incredibly faster than anything you would raise.

Hard to tell in the video but it looks like your cultures are touching each other and the sides of the bins. If so it defeats the purpose of any preventative measures.

  • @tomrobertson6747

I had 7 cultures near each other that all crashed at the same time. I wondered why until I saw mites on all of them. But I don't understand why, if mites don't directly hurt the flies but only compete with them for food, they cause all the flies to die if there is still food. I wonder if something else might have killed them. Many larvae survived in some of them, so I kept them and they've produced many flies.

Mites like to crawl upwards. If your lids are touching each other and the side of the large container (which they are) then it's really defeating the purpose of the paper on the bottom.

Mites suck :p I clean the shelve with biokill and dry it with a paper towel. Lower temperatures and humidity result in a lot less mites. You should breed pea aphids Those are my main foodsource Less problems and no smell:p
