Tip: Keep the page up with no posts for a few weeks. Then mirror some real posts and/or post links to the actual newspaper. Then, if you haven't been taken down after about 2 months, start easing in a few joke posts. It will take a lot longer before you get reported. Also, don't use news stations or corporations, because they're typically more protective of their names on social media

@@TheDeadMeme27 impersonation doesn't only apply to singular individuals, it counts organizations and governing bodies as well. If you did the same thing but chose to be Black Lives Matter or some other org you could open yourself up to a lawsuit as well. The main reason this doesn't happen is because it is impractical to go after every single person on the internet, and much easier to just contact the website's owner and request they be taken down/banned.

Cities and municipalities should not be afforded trademark protection. They are not commercial entities which depend on intellectual property for their survival. A seal that appears on flags, official documents, and government buildings is the property of the citizens who own those flags, documents, and buildings.

No because trademark laws prevent unauthorized financial gain and brand dilution, and do not speak to the ways public insignia are used. It's not that city insignia are not important, it's that *trademark laws* were never written to give the kind of protection they need.

@@failegion7828 No, we've seen this already with a handful of cities across the USA. It is the wrong tool for the job. What happens is little kids get cited for putting the logo on lemonade stands and using it in their school projects without clearing it first with the city. And the scammers change their logo so it's confusing but not infringing and keep doing what they're doing. Cities trademark logos so they can wring another revenue stream out of the people who live there, and it's wrong. It's not the purpose of trademark laws, and it's not meant for the kind of official transactions that municipal logos are used for. Trademarks are meant to protect the revenue of corporations with a *product* to sell. The point of a city is not to make revenue. You might be thinking that "oh, but what if someone sends a fake water bill or school tax bill and scams people out of money?" And that's a great point, but a five-year infringement suit leading to a conviction is not going to help the people that paid last quarter's water bill and still owe the city. The very first thing I said was that cities should not be given trademark protection and after refining the discussion, my new argument is that cities should not be given trademark protection.
