    Great topic for a video! I am always initially weary with most 1962 & on Prestige records and learned that trick you talked about which helps to weed out the potentially noisy records. I don’t think I’ve had a problem with any Blue Tridents but have heard some titles were pressed with the recycled vinyl. I’ve even heard that 2 people could have the same pressing of a Prestige record and 1 is on recycled and 1 isn’t. A huge shame as well are the New Jazz titles pressed after like 1962. Huge money for many titles that are on recycled vinyl. This recycled vinyl issue really tarnishes the incredible reputation that Prestige built up in the 50s.

    Absolutely. It’s one of those things that probably should be documented in more detail, the problem is no one wants to have to buy all that hissy vinyl to be able to parse it out

    I once had a blue trident mono (early 1967 pressing, approx) of a Chet Baker Quintet album (Comin' On, specifically) that had that prestige hiss... replaced it with another copy of the exact same pressing in mono that didn't!

    Recently picked up a super clean copy of Sonny Rollins - Rollins Plays For Bird. This was a blue trident electronically remastered stereo PRST 7553, but indeed it's an RVG stamped mono that sounds fantastic and super quiet. Just shows you have to pay attention that any RVG stamped 1956 pressing has to be mono. Got er for a song. Great channel!

    I just spun a status copy of a John Wright trio today and it was soo noisy. I cleaned it a bunch which help a bit what still it was a hard listen. I will keep it just because his titles are so rare and this one only cost me $20 at a book store I walked into this summer. I wish this video came earlier in my collecting days. Very helpful!

    Interesting ; would be interested to know the years you are talking about here. But a very good suggestion about avoiding stereo. This is why I praised RCA Dynaflex in the early 70s. Yeah mostly rock and country, but because of the oil crisis a lot of labels used recycled vinyl. RCA came up with 130 or so gram Dynaflex using virtually pure vinyl Thin as hell and they were mocked but most are great pressings and sound fabulous ✌🏻

    it feels like the window for the recycled vinyl issue for New Jazz / Status and Prestige is from about 1961/62 through 65. The difference is that New Jazz didn't seem to release new titles with the hiss, so sticking to an original mono pressing seems to be safe. Not so with Status.

  • @thibs2442

    Definitely a great video topic but I can't say I fully agree with you on avoiding these pressings at all costs. I think you are right about the black fireworks label and for the most part Status. However I seek out Status especially for the price and wouldn't never tell someone not to get one. Also with Status some are worse than others. My favorites are the Prestige mono blue trident labels though and I would compare those in sound to Blue Note Liberty pressings for the most part. I think most of those are not on recycled vinyl, especially if they don't have Status labels on them. For instance the Ray Draper on New Jazz with Coltrane that is on the blue trident label with Status labels on the cover is on recycled vinyl. But my Gigi Gryce The Hap'nin's on the blue trident vinyl is not recycled. I think most of those are actually worth seeking out for the sound and price. Great video topic though and people should definitely be aware of what they are getting into.

    Thanks for the info! I just picked up a silver Prestige of 3 Giants with Sonny Rollins, Clifford Brown and Max Roach that looked amazing, but sounded awful. Good to know about the silver label. It is such a great record, and looks VG+ as well, but did not deliver. Hiss, crackle, pops and a super high noise floor make it unlistenable.

    I have that same pressing of Mr Soul and it is quite noisy, well beyond the physical damage to the record’s surface. And, per your mention of the non-DG fireworks label, I’ve heard from two separate people that Ahmed Abdul-Malik’s Eastern Moods (1963) is a very hissy pressing. Unfortunately, this was the only pressing Prestige made, to my knowledge. Hey, Craft Recordings! Where u at?!

    I guess that you have never got a record pressed by Optimal Media. A low frequency hiss is present on every record I have had pressed by Optimal Media. I can easily tell that a record has been pressed by Optimal Media in the first few seconds of listening to it. There have been some records over the last few years which were simultaneously pressed by Optimal Media and American record companies, like QRP and Rainbo. The American pressings are always quieter. Now, recycled vinyl. Have you noticed in record pressing videos that after a record is pressed the edge is trimmed? The trimmings fall into a barrel and then the barrel's contents are dumped into a grinder, and then added to new vinyl pellets With Acoustic Sounds' first UHQR release, "Axis: Bold As Love" by Jimi Hendrix, I was told by their Customer Service department that they had a 16% defective rate, my copy was one of them. This amounted to 100's of returned records. Do you think they threw them out with the trash? Remember, the UHQR vinyl is a special vinyl mix, only used on UHQR releases.

    One reason I tend to enjoy the reissue of 60's and 70's records since the vinyl back then was generally poor. 45's are a joke. I get a lot of grief on KZread though for preferring the reissues.

    Great to know. I just got a 64 reissue of Coltrane Lush Life and it has those dimples in the vinyl and skips everywhere even though it looks fine. That was a mono so I wonder if it ever leaked over to mono too

  • @jazzvinylcollector

    @jazzvinylcollector

    Yes, for early reissues of Prestige even in mono, they definitely used recycled vinyl from time to time. Sorry to hear you had that issue. Unfortunately most sellers online grade visually (sometimes conveniently so) and don't always reference or even know about the recycled vinyl factor

  • @thibs2442

    @thibs2442

    I would say those dimples are more a pressing error than evidence of recycled vinyl. I have seen those pressing bubbles on records with good quality vinyl too. Recycled vinyl has never made a record skip in my experience. They only cause that low level noise like in the audio sample of this video.

    Question, because I honestly don’t know: are the original pressings of these albums on recycled vinyl? Or was it some later issues? This is good information since I recently decided to start trying to hunt down original jazz records of what are my “essential” titles, and this is good knowledge to know what to look for and hopefully avoid.

  • @jazzvinylcollector

    It's complicated like everything else. The original MONO pressings of most Prestige records are not pressed on recycled vinyl. The original Stereo pressings seem to often be, but there doesnt seem to be a hard and fast rule. Generally speaking, between the years 1961-1964, there is an inordinate amount of recycled vinyl pressings on stereo releases, as well as 2nd pressings of mono titles. Sometimes you can't tell at all by seeing pictures, but one indicator thats especially relevant for the New Jazz subsidiary is whether the Deep Groove is narrow or wide. Wide is an indicator of first pressing, and is highly unlikely to be recycled. On the other hand, the narrow Deep Groove could be on recycled as much as.... I dunno, maybe 1/3 of the time? Just a guess.

    @@jazzvinylcollector See I would say that most of the mono blue tridents are not on recycled vinyl but I know more vinyl has passed through your hands than mine. But in my experience if the jacket has a Status label and it is on the blue trident label there is a good chance of recycled vinyl but if there are no Status labels on the jacket then there is a very good (like 80%) chance that the vinyl was pristine and there is no noise.

  • @careyatchison1348

    Why did they not use recycled vinyl on their mono releases?

  • @jazzvinylcollector

    @jazzvinylcollector

    Жыл бұрын

    it's a good question. it could be that they saw the stereo releases as a novelty that fewer people were interested in, given that many probably still had mono equipment. Stereo releases also wouldn't have been used for radio play since stations didn't adopt stereo equipment until late 60's / early 70s (which is why so many promos up until that point are mono copies)
