    There's a slight channeling going on with unpressurised basket extraction. You should try to grind a bit finer, if that's possible on your grinder or try adding extra 1gr of coffee to the basket. Should give you even better result and, hopefully, a tastier shot.

    I have to disagree on the statement that grind size doesn't matter with pressurized basket. It does, i've tried coarser grind with pressurized and finer grind with pressurized. Coarser grind gives something i would rather call just "coffee" and not espresso. Finer grind with pressurized basket CAN create real crema without bubbles, but the extraction time is very long, for a double shot, around 90 seconds in my case. So yes, you can make "non pressurized" espresso with "pressurized" basket, although it will take a long time, therefore it is simpler to just buy a non pressurized basket. 😄

    Bonne vidéo, mais l'extraction avec le panier sans fond pourrait être encore meilleure, on voit beaucoup de jets du aux canalisations. Il se peut que ça vienne de ta manière d'utiliser l'outil de distribution. Il ne faut pas piquer, mais faire des mouvements de rotation, en commençant par le fond du filtre et en remontant progressivement vers la surface. En espérant que ça puisse t'aider. Bon expresso 😉

    Thank you for watching and commenting 🙂 It varies, there are different types of manual coffee grinders (mine is an old manual grinder and it takes somewhere 3 to 4 minutes to grind very fine grounds) you can find manual grinders that do the job in a minute. But manual coffee grinders have some benefits, they release more aromas from the beans just because it takes longer to grind 👌🙂

    Hi Peter, great video! Thanks for sharing! I have a question about the ground coffee in the video. What is the difference between the coffee used for pressurized portafilters and the one you manually grind? Is it mainly about size, and if so, which one tends to be finer? I bought some whole beans from Costco and used the machine they provided to grind them at size 7. Looks coarser than yours. I'm using a Delonghi 685 with its original pressurized filter. Do you think it might be too coarse for this setup? Thanks!

    For the pressurized coffee it was coarser than the manual grinder. I got freshly ground coffee from the coffee shop so I'm not sure about the size. it was definitely coarser but not so coarse to extract watery espresso ,let's say medium-fine. The manual grinder grinds finer and goes better with a non-pressurized portafilter. You have to try different sizes before you decide what is best for you. Thank you for watching and your kind words!     γεια σου Πέτρο! σκέφτομαι να πάρω και γω την ιδια μηχανή γιατι ειναι vfm. Εχω δει κιολας πως αν αφαιρεσεις το πλαστικό απο το ακροφύσιο και βάλει ενα tiewrap για να κραταει το πλαστικο φτιάχνεις καλύτερο γάλα! μπορεις να κανεις και ενα βιντεάκι σύγκρησης! πολύ ωραια τα βιντεάκια σου συνέχισε!! Επίσης απο που αγόρασες το non presurised portafilter?

    Σε ευχαριστώ που παρακολουθείς τα βίντεο ! Η Dedica είναι η καλύτερη επιλογή στην entry level κατηγορία και με μια μικρή αναβάθμιση όπως το non-pressurized portafilter μπορείς να φτιάχνεις πολύ καλό καφέ! Όσο για το γάλα αν ρίξεις μια ματιά σε κάποια πρόσφατα βίντεο εξηγώ πως να αφαιρείς το μεταλλικό εξάρτημα από το ακροφυσιο και να το δέσεις αλλά και πως φτιάχνεις γάλα για Latte. Ίσως φτιάξω και βίντεο ειδικά για το πως να φτιάχνεις το γάλα κάποια στιγμή στο μέλλον 🙂👍

    I tried to compare with just fill the portafilter with coffee and straight up brewing, and the meticulous method, scaling, distributing, tampering, preheat machine and glass etc. Result...there's a difference in taste but not enough for me to go to all those extra effort. I guess my palette is just too simple.

    Thank you for watching 🙂 Go for it, your espresso will taste much better! I got it online, it's easy to find one but remember to choose the right one for your machine and by that I mean the size( 51 mm for the DeLonghi Dedica) . The speed varies from the grind size and how hard you tamp the coffee in the portafilter. I have managed after some practice to reach the ideal extraction speed 👌

    Hi, my tamper, WDT and dosing ring looks the same like you. Tamper have exactly 51,00 mm in diameter, so the basket should be more than 51 mm. Do you have a basket diameter larger than 51 mm? Where did you buy your non-pressurized portafilter?

    Hello, I bought the non-pressurized portafilter online, unfortunately i don't have any link. Before buying anything online make sure you read the description very carefully and see if it says it's compatible with your machine or the tools you have. I remember that I read the description carefully and it was saying that the tamper was compatible with DeLonghi Dedica's portafilter. But I have other issues with it as it's loose and sometimes I have to keep it in place to not pop out during brewing. Maybe I'll buy a new one and I will leave info in the description to help people that face the same problem 🙂👍

    Hello - I have the same Dedica machine (Arte) and recently the coffee I buy (pre ground espresso grind) is not working well with my pressurised portafilter and basket. The water pressure seems to have trouble pushing through and the coffee sometimes doesn't drip out much at all. I think it's because the grind is too fine - it works a little better with the single shot basket but not the double. I wonder whether buying a non pressurised basket would solve it? Does it need to work with a bottomless portafilter too? I do plan to grind my own beans but I can't invest in a good grinder right now.

    The slow extraction is only a problem because your machine doesn't feature a manual mode - you have three controls, single shot - double shot - steam. I have a different machine, also a cheaper model like yours, but thankfully it has manual mode where i decide how long will the pump work. I am able to create very good espresso with a pressurized basket and finely ground coffee - but like you said, its very slow, from 50 to 80 seconds, which is fine by me, as I absolutely hate the standard single and double shot modes (15 and 25 seconds) as they make the espresso too watery and not thick with the fake foam crema.

    If it doesn't drip out, it means the pre ground coffee is too fine. The non-pressurized portafilter combined with a good grinder (good doesn't necessarily mean expensive, I purchased mine for 40 euros), and a scale can give you consistent quality coffee 🙂

    Salut ! Je suis vient tout juste d'acheter cette machine ainsi que le grinder qui va avec. Par hasard, est-ce que ton portefiltre est un Neouza ? Parce que ça y ressemble et je n'arrive pas à mettre plus de 16g dedans...

    Bonjour ! Ce n'est pas du Neouza, s'il ne tient pas 18 grammes, mettez 17 voire 16, mais pas moins de 16 car le café sera aqueux. Merci d'avoir regardé la vidéo et d'avoir commenté

    I've bought a non pressurised basket but the shots are way too fast and doesn't produce much crema at all, any solutions please ? I've tried dialling the grind sizes and distributing as best as possible but still unsuccessful in pulling a good shot 😢

    You can 1) adjust the coffee grinder to a finer setting 2) fill the basket with more coffee (at least 16 or more grams) 3) tamp the coffee with more force 4) use freshly ground coffee beans 5) try to preheat your portafilter by pulling an empty shot before the brewing.     Yes correct, as adviced, you need to slow the water flow: use finer grinding to boost resistance of water flow. Or slow by using dimmer to water pump, but this is internal manual hardware mod

    Ευτυχως που σε βρηκα! Απελπισία!Την εχω 2 μερες κ ενα μονο μπυ τρεχει σε 7 δευτερα.Εχω παρει αυτο το κλειστρο σαν το δικο σου.Εχω παρει καφε αλεσμενο στο 2,5 μηπως χρειάζεται πιο ψιλο?Δεν εχω ακομα μυλο.

    Καλώς ήρθες στο κανάλι μου 🙂 το συγκεκριμένο κλείστρο έχει καλύτερη εκχύλιση με ψιλοκομμένο καφέ και ειδικά τον φρέσκο. Θα σου συνιστούσα να πάρεις έναν μύλο άλεσης ,χειροκίνητο για αρχή , και φρέσκο καβουρδισμενο καφέ και θα δεις μεγάλη διαφορά στην εκχύλιση αλλά και στη γεύση. Βέβαια εξαρτάται και πόσο δυνατά πατάς το tamper. Αν είναι χοντροκομμενος και πατάς χαλαρα με το πατητήρι τότε το νερό θα διαπερασει γρήγορα τον συμπιεσμένο καφε. Εν κατακλείδι το non-pressurized κλείστρο θέλει ψιλοκομμένο και φρέσκο αλεσμενο καφέ για να πάρεις το μέγιστο σε γεύση και εκχύλιση 🙂👍

    @@user-hf4ky3cm2s θα σου πρότεινα να ρωτήσεις τον πωλητή που θα σου αλεσει τον καφέ γιατί αυτοί έχουν επαγγελματικό μύλο άλεσης και θα ξέρουν καλύτερα και να τους ενημερώσεις ότι έχεις την συγκεκριμένη μηχανή με non-pressurized κλείστρο θα ξέρουν σε τι μέγεθος να τον αλεσουν. Θέλει λίγο πειραματισμό στην αρχη μέχρι να βρεις το μέγεθος άλεσης, τον καφέ που σου αρέσει ,το ποσο δυνατά πατάς με το πατητήρι αλλά θα το βρεις 🙂👍

    Έχεις δοκιμάσει με κομμένο καφέ κάτω από 2?Και δεύτερον το portafilter μου το ανοιχτό μου τρέχει και απ έξω νερά ενώ με της μηχανής όχι.Εχεις καμία ιδέα γιατί μπορεί να συμβαίνει αυτό? Κοντεύω να τη σπασω😂

    Ο μύλος που έχω δεν έχει ρυθμίσεις και μου βγάζει πολύ ψιλοκομμένο καφέ. Το οτι σου πετάει νερά μπορεί να οφείλεται στο ότι είναι ελαττωματικό το portafilter, αυτά που παίρνουν οι περισσότεροι από ασιατικές online πλατφορμες παρουσιάζουν τέτοια θεματακια κάποια άλλα χαλαρώνουν κατά την διάρκεια της εκχύλισης και πρέπει να τα κρατάς με το χέρι να μην βγουν εντελώς. Πόσο καφέ βάζεις περίπου στο καλαθάκι αν δε βάζεις αρκετή ποσότητα πάλι υπάρχει περίπτωση να πετάξει νερά 👍

    Πετρο καλησπερα και συγχαρητηρια για το βιντεο σου. Εχω αγορασει και εγω αλλο γκρουπ. Ομως παρατηρησα πως δεν εχεις επιλεξει σωστο βαθμο αλεσης με αποτελεσμα να σου κανει τσανελινγκ… Ο καφες πρεπει να βγαινει σε μια μονο δεσμιδα μεσα στο ποτηρι χωρις να πιτσιλαει δεξια αριστερα. Οταν βρεις αναλογα ποιον καφε χρησιμοποιεις,σε τι βαθμο πρεπει να τον αλεσεις ,τοτε θα εχεις και σωστη εκχυλιση του καφε.

    Σε ευχαριστώ για τα καλά σου λόγια και που παρακολουθησες το βίντεο 🙂 Το λάθος εδώ πιστεύω ήταν πως αντί να αναδευσω απλά τον καφέ στο γκρουπ εγώ τον πάταγα και προς τα κάτω με τον διανομέα που έχει βελόνες, κατά κύριο λόγο αυτό και μετά αυτό που λες με το βαθμό άλεσης.Στο επόμενο βίντεο που θα ανεβάσω την Πέμπτη πετυχαίνω καλύτερη εκχύλιση, αν έχεις χρόνο μπες να τσεκάρεις 👍🙂

    @@Petercoffeee δεν ειναι λαθος που πατησες με τον διανομεα.εχει να κανει με το ποσο ψιλη αλεση θα κανεις.πρεπει να βρεις το βαθμο αλεσης.και τοτε θα εχεις τελειο αποτελεσμα.οταν το καταφερεις πες το και σε εμας!!εχω την ιδια καφετιερα και με ενδοαφερει αν με μυλο και σωστο κοψιμο το αποτελεσμα Μπορει να ειναι το σωστο

    For my taste, even 16gr is too strong for espresso. My pressurized tastes better in 10gr then non pressurized in 14-16. I get great chanelling but too strong coffe for my taste:)

    Yeah, all the guides you see say,get double porta with 16-18gr :) Maybe some weaker coffe like 100% arabica would match my taste, but, at the moment i got mix with more robusta and even 14gr is dark and strong:) I use cheaper coffe for experiments and quality when I find my "settings"

    It's an old bronze manual grinder made for grinding Turkish or Greek coffee 👍🙂

    It was the same coffee from the same coffee shop 🙂 The first one that I used with the pressurized portafilter was grounded at the coffee shop because the pressurized needs coarser grounds, and I grinded the coffee beans at home with this hand grinder for the non-pressurized 👍

    @@Petercoffeee Ah okay that’s closer. I do still find however that immediately fresh ground coffee over coffee that was previously ground can still produce different results. As the deterioration is quite fast imo. Either way good video though. I’m going to get myself a non pressurised portafilter soon and this video cemented the decision.

    ​@@PetercoffeeeI confirm, your shot has too much output, you need 2...2.5:1 ratio. 36...45 ml of espresso output. Try more finer grinding, to slow water. In my hand grinder, analog to comandante, I use 5...6 cliks.
