Pressure Support

ICU ventilator settings were something I used to struggle with. Even keeping the names straight were tough for me sometimes, but I think I finally straightened them out! In this video we take a quick look at Pressure Support. It’s a commonly used vent setting for weaning patients from ventilators by assisting them with their spontaneous breathing. We take a look at what this vent setting actually does for the patient, what we dial in and what we get out.

Thanks for these videos, very nice review. Doesn't apnea mode essentially function as would SIMV? In other words, the patient breathes spontaneously with pressure support, but there is a backup mandatory rate dialed into the ventilator?

What if the spontaneous breathing trial is more than 8 hours a day? And they’re getting really tired from it? Is there something I can ask the nurse without making it seem like I’m questioning if they know what they’re doing?
