Pressing out 1972 SuperBeetle control arm bushings with a ball joint tool

I thought I was going to have to get a machine shop to press out the bushings my SuperBeetle's control arms. Turns out the ball joint tool set that I rented for another purpose was perfect.
I'm refurbishing my 1972 SuperBeetle (all my videos relating to that car are here: • 1972 VW engine rebuild... . Before I stopped driving it the last time, it had developed a pretty bad "super-shimmy": a vibration from 35 to 50 mph. I'm going through the front suspension and replacing all the wear parts to try to fix that. This bushing removal was the one step that I hadn't really figured out how to do, short of going to a machine shop.

Thanks for posting this. I have a 72 Super myself and have been trying to figure out how to do this.

I would love to know if it works for you! When I was doing this, we were in the heart of Covid-19 isolation, and I just didn't want to try to find a machine shop that knew how to remove them properly. It was a complete happy accident that a tool I rented for something completely different was exactly the right thing for this. So if you have a good automotive machine shop, they may know how to do it.
