On another note I watch another artist’s channel called Thak Ironworks, he does lots of different things if you ever have time check out his YT page. Love watching all of you forge and create different things, I just started playing in my garage trying to make a dragon out of scraps of copper tubing. If you have an email for your channel and would like to see any pics, plz let me know, it’s still going to be a few weeks before I’m done with either one. I’m trying to figure out how to get proportions and textures to look good. But both my kids loved what I have done on the first one, have a great day too you and anyone else that reads this.

Being a rookie, trying to come up with some equipment, i found that a press is a whole lot more available than a power hammer, most turn log splitters into presses by simply adding an anvil, in my case, a piece of railroad track with a 1" ×4"×5" plate welded on the end to be the anvil.

It's actually only about 9 tons.

Big blu presses 27 or 50T are great and very easy to make your own dies for them.

It's interesting to see the different tools different smiths prefer to use. As an example, Kyle Royer only uses a home-built hydraulic and Torbjorn Ahman uses power hammers. Both make nice stuff.

I also used the Coal Iron design for holding the dies on my DIY hydraulic press. Except that I used taper ended setscrews and I also offset by 1/8 inch the tapered dimple in the die. That way when when I tighten the setscrew, it seats the die to the base. Works great!

Thanks John, I have a 12 ton coal iron press and have been thinking about punch dies. I am amazed how you find new things to do with hydraulic press and how to make do what you want.

Nice job John, I don’t have a press but do plan on building one at some time!

Thanks for another good video. I agree, you need to speed that press up some. However, I’d like to clear up one misconception. Horse power alone is not going to speed it up. In hydraulics flow is speed, resistance to flow is pressure and horsepower is force. You need a higher rpm motor for more speed. More horsepower and rpm’s would be best.

Correct, but to achieve higher RPMs requires a 5hp full speed motor to replace the 2 HP slow speed motor currently being used.

Hi John, nice informative video. Couldn't miss the post drill, nice touch. I just picked up a Canedy Otto post drill, 2 speed spindle, 3 different feed rates, also has a bracket to hold the drills and oil can. Very rare to find one with the accessory bracket. No breaks, or welds, and has the original plank it's mounted on. Sadly no tooling or oil can. 👍🔥⚒

Thanks for the video, a friend of mine has a bunch of scrap currently with two large hydraulic pumps and one ginormous hydraulic cylinder. Something like 8 inches. Scary. I was doubting it would make a good forging press in terms of being way too slow even on a large pump and also dangerous because i don't think i can make a frame safe at some sort of utterly crazy tonnage that needs more square inches of steel to resist than what can comfortably be welded with a normal size stick machine. Probably gonna take one of the pumps and get a more resonable cylinder from...somehwere. Unless those pumps are fairly low pressure and high flow but i do not think so because the original application was likely slow (sausage press which does not use a screw extruder and instead has a giant armored bin with a 20 inch piston under the meat, weird weird weird piece of gear)

And actually i am now reconsidering using that cylinder. Its there, its free and i have two pumps which both turn out to be single stage and 5hp each and after subtracting the od, the cylinder seems to be more like 6 inches ID. Now i just need to figure out the flow rate of the pumps. Maybe they DID enable high travel speed for cleaning and such and since they are both single stage and were simply connected in parallel, it seems likely that it might all just about work out fine because that is a lot of power on a cylinder smaller than what it looked like when hidden between lots of lines, pumps and junk in the belly of a dark and dirty machine.

My old base plates were 4" X 6" The new die holders are set up for 3" X 6". Since the old system had a frame around the plate to hold it in place and the new one doesn't, the new system will actually allow for larger dies.

I’m a knife maker. But in view I guess a lot of your videos and some other blacksmith videos, I believe I’m going to expand more into your realm. So I have one question. In your opinion which metal type of the medium steels is easiest to move hand forging?

if you're looking for medium carbon steel to forge by hand, I would try 1045. But for most non tool projects, mild steel is more than adequate.

@@BlackBearForge thanks for the reply. I only asked about medium carbon steels because, the one thing I lack since I only make knives is, tooling. I’m going to have to make my own. Chisels, punches, splitters, ect. Also I’d like to try and make a few hammers. Last night I watched your Shepards Axe video. Very cool. I know a good friend of mine, (he and I have a camp together), who would absolutely love it. It may be a future project as my skills evolve. Thanks for the reply and all the great content. With KZread you can reach thousands or millions of people. I believe you’re more of a mentor and teacher, than you realize. Or maybe you do realize.

It's not built to any specific plans but is based on the plans from James Batson's book Build Your Own Hydraulic Forging Press

I have a question with Forge welding cable I got the cable forge welded together but whenever I tried to take the cable billets and put them together I cannot get them to forge weld not sure what I am doing wrong

There are so many variables that all have to come together that I can't say for sure. But in most cases its either not hot enough or has something contaminating the weld.
